How Good Are EverStart Batteries?

“Are EverStart batteries good?” is a question most people ask themselves a lot. Well, the simple answer is yes, they are. Contrary to what many people may think, Everstart batteries aren’t manufactured by Walmart. These batteries are manufactured by one of the world’s most renowned companies- Johnsons Controls- and they have been in the manufacturing business since 1885.

For their price, these batteries are worth every penny, and most users who have purchased and used the battery have left a positive review with an average rating of 4 stars on Walmart’s site.

In terms of how good these batteries are, we can say that EverStart batteries are durable, lasting well over 2 years to 5 years for premium models; these batteries also require little to no maintenance; and they can perform well in extreme conditions. These batteries are also affordable, providing automobile owners with an affordable option that is easily accessible at all Walmart and other automotive stores.

In the video below, a user demonstrates how easy it is to start your vehicle with an EverStart battery even in extremely cold weather.

EverStart vs Energizer

Energizer is another popular name in the world of batteries. Energizer batteries are known to be expensive, and even more expensive than Duracell batteries. Even though Energizer has been one of the major forces in the small battery market, they are known to produce some really good starter batteries as well.

Even though they may have limited options in the large battery space, their batteries are known to be more durable and offer higher performance than EverStart batteries.

Pros and Cons of Everstart Batteries

Pros

  • Affordable price.
  • Can perform in harsh conditions.
  • Little to no maintenance is required.
  • Comes with replacement warranties.
  • Easy to purchase (at any Walmart store near you).
  • Great value for money.
  • Durable.

Cons

  • Walmart is the sole retailers.
  • Poor customer service.
  • Installation is not available in all Walmart locations; only at stores with Walmart Auto Care Centers.

Types of Batteries Available

There are various variations of EverStart batteries, and this can tend to confuse a lot of newbies; however, in this section, we will try as much as possible to break things down to your understanding.

In terms of the type of EverStart batteries, we will classify the batteries based on three metrics:

  • Purpose of the battery
  • The technology used to develop the battery
  • The category of the battery (for car batteries)

Purpose

In terms of purpose, EverStart offers batteries designed to meet the power needs of each type of motor vehicle out there; these include:

Marine Batteries

EverStart provides high-quality batteries for various marine vehicles. These batteries are referred to as deep-cycle batteries and have been engineered to discharge up to 80% without the battery being damaged.

EverStart marine batteries are ideal for small and medium watercraft and have been designed to work perfectly in both fresh and salty water bodies, as well as in extreme weather conditions both at sea and bay.

EverStart also offers starter batteries for larger marine vessels.

Automotive Batteries

These are the popular options most people know, and just as the name suggests, these types of batteries are designed for automotive vehicles. What makes the automotive batteries from EverStart unique is that they are affordable, durable, offer great performance, and are robust enough to perform in harsh conditions.

EverStart offers users two varieties of automotive batteries: either an AGM battery or a lead-acid battery. AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) is a generic battery type that offers advanced benefits compared to lead-acid batteries.

Tractor and Lawnmower Batteries

If you need a battery for your farming machines such as lawnmowers, tractors, and backhoes, or any equipment for your lawn and garden, then EverStart offers batteries for these needs.

These batteries are designed to provide a higher output power and are more robust than car batteries enabling you to handle vibrations, jolts, and bumps. However, they tend to be smaller in size, and have a low voltage (they usually have a voltage of 10 volts) compared to automotive batteries.

PowerSport

For the fellas who have ATVs, UTVs, personal watercraft, and whatnot, EverStart offers batteries for this equipment as well. These batteries are designed to meet the rigorous use of this equipment.

Recreational Battery

These are batteries designed to meet the high demands of recreational vehicles and off-road vehicles. EverStart deep cycle batteries are designed to provide RVs and similar vehicles with constant and steady power over an extended period with little to no maintenance.

Battery Technology

EverStart batteries either come designed with AGM technology or conventional lead-acid technology. The AGM technology is often found in either the car/automotive or Powersport battery types, and they tend to be more expensive than the lead-acid battery option. That being said, the lead-acid option can be found in all battery types.

Models

In terms of models, any car/automotive battery you purchase from EverStart falls into one of five models:

everstart, battery, replacement, maxx
  • EverStart Value
  • EverStart Plus
  • EverStart Maxx
  • EverStart Prem Maxx
  • EverStart Platinum

EverStart Value

This is a budget option for the EverStart battery line. These batteries come with a one-year replacement warranty. Not only that, but this battery offers users cold-cranking Amps ranging from 490 to 650 CCA.

EverStart Plus

This is a more expensive model than the EverStart Value, and it is a lead-acid battery, offering more perks than the affordable option. One major benefit you get by purchasing the Plus version is that you get a 2-year replacement warranty, and it offers a variety of CCA options, starting from 525 CCA to 725 CCA.

EverStart

Walmart’s store brand Everstart is affordable in the lead-acid varieties, but buyers have encountered unreliability and short lifespan. However, they are well-reviewed on Walmart’s site, and EverStart has a fairly wide variety of battery sizes.

EverStart’s Value line is what it says on the tin. It’s a very low-cost battery that will get the job done in a pinch. The cold cranking amps are low –- an Everstart Value Group 65 is rated at 650 CCA versus the Maxx’s 850.– and the warranty is only a year long, but there are plenty of group sizes available at most stores and online. If cost is a shopper’s main concern, it hits that mark with a sub-hundred dollar price point on most group sizes.

The EverStart Maxx is, at best, a compromise. It’s a good battery for the price and the best EverStart for the money. The EverStart Maxx’s three-year warranty factors into its value, especially if the driver lives near a Walmart store. The warranty will definitely be a strong reason to grab a low-cost EverStart as exchanging the failed battery is as easy as stopping in with the core and a receipt, as long as there’s an Auto Center on-site to test the battery.

While there’s an EverStart AGM option available as well, nearly every other brand on this list offers a better alternative at a similar price.

Interstate

The green-labeled.– and occasionally green-topped.– Interstate batteries are available at many independent shops, at their own Interstate All Battery Centers and through Costco stores. A reliable replacement battery with an interesting history, Interstates are available in a large number of group sizes and applications.

Interstate started out as a company that sold batteries out of the back of one man’s pickup in 1952 and expanded to selling 19 million batteries a year. They are well known, available almost everywhere, and provide nearly every group size known to man. Their warranties are in the middle of the pack, starting at 18 months and going up to 48 for their best AGMs.

What makes Interstate interesting is also what makes it tough to recommend. While many of the batteries on our list are produced by Clarios, Exide, or Delphi, Interstate batteries are kind of an amalgamation of several manufacturers that share a branding. Even though manufacturers are typically held to certain standards for each brand they produce batteries for, it’s difficult to maintain consistency when the batteries are produced by different plants or factories. So, while by no means is that fact a condemnation of these historically reliable batteries, it’s something to consider.

Motorcraft

The Ford Motor Company’s house brand of batteries is available at Ford dealerships as well as places like O’Reilly Auto Parts, allowing folks who want to maintain OEM parts on their vehicles to access replacement batteries almost anywhere. Typically, warranties are also accepted at all of these same facilities. The most obvious benefit to that decision is that Ford knows exactly what batteries fit which Ford vehicles, reducing the chance that the kid at the parts desk might grab the wrong aftermarket option when three are presented in their parts database.

Clarios is the manufacturer of Ford Motorcraft batteries, meaning DIY Ford enthusiasts and technicians can take solace in the knowledge that these batteries are made by the company that makes most of the automotive batteries in the United States. While the labels and specs make each brand unique, the overall quality of Clarios and the reliability of Ford’s parts brand make Motorcraft batteries easy to recommend to drivers of the legendary American automaker’s products.

How does the EverStart Maxx limited warranty work with a prorated plan?

If it’s less than three years since you bought your battery, Walmart’s Automotive center tests it and determines it’s dead, they will give you a new one for free.

If it’s greater than three years but less than five years, and they test your battery and find it’s dead, Walmart will prorate you the remaining months left on your warranty and apply the discount towards the purchase of a new battery.

Prorating your discount is determined as follows.

(Percentage of months remaining) x (Current retail price of a new battery)

For example, my Everstart Maxx battery is 42 months old (3 and a half years old), is no longer eligible for a free replacement, is tested dead but I need a new battery. According to my warranty, I have 18 months left or 30 percent remaining. If a new battery is still 93.76 I get a 28.13 discount off that new battery price.

Does the new battery I get as a replacement come with its own new warranty, effectively restarting a warranty?

Short answer, no. The original warranty from your original battery purchase is STILL in effect.

Take the previous example above. If you bought a new battery with a pro-rated discount, totaling 65.13, and for some reason this battery tests dead 18 months and one day later, you DO NOT get a replacement battery because the original warranty of five years is what counts, is now expired, and you have no warranty claim.

The only time you get a new car battery warranty is when you pay full price.

According to Johnson Controls, the maker of all Wal-Mart batteries by the way,

“One thing many folks don’t realize when they purchase a battery, is that the warranty coverage doesn’t re-set with each warranty replacement. That means if you bought a battery with a three-year free replacement warranty on January 1, 2014, that warranty coverage ends on January 1, 2017, no matter how many times your battery was replaced under warranty during that period. Re-setting a warranty with each replacement would essentially result in a lifetime warranty and the last company we heard of, who offered such coverage on batteries they sold is no longer in business.”

Where can I read the full text of the terms and conditions for Walmart Car Battery Limited Warranties?

You can also assume the same terms and conditions apply for ValuePower batteries, too. I’d post it here but this post is already getting too long.

No, not necessarily. If you don’t have the receipt, there’s usually a punch-out date on the battery itself that a WalMart can reference. If you return to the original store you purchased it at or any store for that matter, they might be able to bring up a proof of purchase in their system.

WalMart car batteries offer some of the best bang for your buck and are a great choice if you need a new car battery. And, with WalMarts literally scattered throughout the United States, if you need to replace one via warranty work, you don’t have to look too hard.

What do you think of Walmart’s ValuePower or EverStart Car batteries? Do you think they’re a good deal? Let me know your thoughts in the Комментарии и мнения владельцев below?

2 things. I just replaced a Everstart Maxx(at a little over 2 years in AZ) and asked them how the warranty worked. At least as far as the Maxx goes, less than 3 years you get what is left of the orginal warranty. A pro-rated battery does get a new warranty.I did not have a reciept, but it was not a problem. The battery has a serial number they lookup, plus there is a sticker that tell will tell you when it was purchased.

We recently purchased a vehicle and the battery is less than 9 months old and is defective however Walmart said they could not replace it because we are not the original purchaser … I wouldn’t think that would void the warranty but obviously they said it does … does not seem right to me ?

everstart, battery, replacement, maxx

Warranty is non-transferable, so they of course won’t replace a second hand battery.

This may be what the printed warranty says but I’ve never been asked for a receipt when getting a warranty claim replacement at Walmart. Never been asked if I bought the battery.Tried a 2-1/2 year old Duracell 3 year free replacement battery. Dealer required a receipt, No warranty anyway as the 2 year old battery was in the car when I bought it.

I just purchased an EverStart battery about 3-4 days ago I was trying to put it on my truck in the dark I got it up up to the truck got battery cable ends on the post and realized I had them on the wrongso I took the battery cable ends off the post and went to turn it around and I dropped it busted one of the posts into the top of the battery are they going to replace my battery it’s only 4 days old and I have a receipt

No, not with the damage you’ve done to it. It can’t be refurbished if you break it like that. Crossing your cables like that, if you didn’t fry the computer in your car, I’d be shocked. The reason they put ted on the positive side of the battery and cable is so accidents like this don’t happen, as the damage that causes can cost you thousands. Either way, both forms of damage is easily found to be your responsibility, so not covered by warranty. You’re going to have to buy a new one.

Attempted today to get an Everdstart battery warranted from Walmart in Sylva, NC. where it was purchased. Was told that I had to go directly to Johnson Controls as they don’t warrant their batteries.

Wow, that sounds very uncommon. Are you trying to purchase a warranty for a battery you already have? Batteries come new with purchase, no further warranty purchase needed.

That is just a load of BS. I wish these sad employees who feel the only sense of power in their menial lives would stop trying to make up the rules based on their moods in that moment or pack of desire to put in the effort to learn their store’s official policies.

When you take your battery in, the automotive department is supposed to test the battery. If it won’t hold a charge, they are to replace it with a new one if under three years old, or to deduct the pro-rated amount towards the purchase of a new one. The warranty date only resets with the latter scenario.

The Walmart i shop at has an automotive “area” but no trained staff, testing equipment or sales desk. I bought my battery by picking it off of the shelf and paying for it in the self-serve check-out. When i had to return it five months later, customer service staff was just lost. I went and grabbed a new one, brought it to the counter, told them to look up my receipt in the system using my bank debit card and they did so. They rang it in as a straight exchange and i was off with my new battery.

Never buy one of these batteries from Walmart. Their Everstart Max failed within months. This must no be an infrequent issue since I was greeted with “another dead soldier, huh”.A reputable auto center tested it and determined that a new 750 CCA battery would only put our 64 CCA. I brought with me the print-out of these results and was told that they couldn’t accept it. That they had to test it themselves. After waiting a half hour, I was told their test would take AT LEAST AN HOUR! They blamed this on the manufacturer, but they are the ones who choose this manufacturer as their proprietary line and are the ones selling it. Sam Walton must be screaming in his grave!

Who Makes Everstart Batteries?

Everstart batteries are among the automobile batteries that Walmart sells. Kindly note that this battery is a product manufactured by Johnson Controls International, a firm that appears famous for producing HVAC, fire, and security equipment.

This company has been around for about 136 years, founded as Johnson Electric Service in 1885. As a public company, the firm acquired a Globe-Union, a battery company, in 1978, which was the start of the production of various batteries.

Johnson Controls International is an international conglomerate that has its headquarters in Ireland (Cork). Nevertheless, the company has a merger with the American firm Tyco International.

The Everstart automotive batteries are, however, available for users across different parts of the world. This product of Johnson Controls follows the signed agreement of the firm to supply batteries to Walmart.

Apart from the Everstart batteries that Johnson Controls supplies, they also have some other battery brands that they manufacture. These products include Continental, Heliar, OPTIMA battery, Delkor, LTH, and VARTA.

Everstart Car Batteries Problems

Everstart car batteries have excellent value and offer adequate power for the proper functioning of your car. Nevertheless, you should look out for these issues below to prevent damages to your new Everstart battery.

Everstart batteries come in different models that hold varying capabilities. Thus, having a model with lesser powers for vehicles with various electronics with high energy needs may put the battery under excessive strain.

Loose Connection

The installation of your Everstart battery should be proper, as loose connections can cause some severe damages. This issue can also cause some severe problems for the engine bays too, as it leads to sparks.

When the battery does not charge properly, you should expect the vehicle to become less functional. Hence, undercharging or overcharging your Everstart battery would cause some severe issues. Kindly note that this can occur because of a faulty alternator. Thus, you should fix the alternator and set the proper voltage for the battery.

It is often common for an excessive battery discharge to cause some severe problems, as it would shorten the service life of the Everstart battery. Thus, it is imperative to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and ensure the battery does not face a complete drain.

Everstart Car Batteries Maintenance Tips

Lack of proper maintenance degrades batteries, and even though Everstart car batteries require only a few maintenances, you mustn’t ignore them. In a bid to enjoy an extended service life of your vehicle’s Everstart batteries, it would help to keep the following in mind.

  • Kindly clean the surface of these batteries regularly to get out dirt and grime that may affect their functionality.
  • It would be beneficial to keep a high level of charge

  • Again, you can look at the old battery you want to replace and search for the group size printed on it. On most batteries, you may also find the reserve charge and CCA details.
  • If you can’t find the details yourself, kindly ask a professional from an auto store.

Final Words
