    Unlike Tesla, Chevrolet doesn’t have any proprietary charging stations. Instead, like every other automaker, it relies on other companies’ charging networks. But that’s also a boon because it means the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV doesn’t feature a brand-specific charging plug.

    The 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV, like virtually every other new non-Tesla EV, has a Combined Charging System (CCS) plug. As long as the charging station you want to use has a CCS connector, the Bolt EUV can use it. That includes Level 2 and Level 3 (DC fast-charging) stations. To use the latter, just pull down the orange dust cover seen in the photos above.

    Pro: The Chevrolet Bolt EUV makes finding public charging stations easy

    Technically, I didn’t have to download the Electrify America app to use one of its chargers. However, I did it for several reasons. Firstly, not all public chargers accept credit cards, though this Electrify America one did. Secondly, I’d heard about other EV owners and reviewers having issues actually charging up at these public stations. And I experienced some of these problems firsthand.

    First, the credit card reader didn’t work. I tried with my credit card, then my debit card, and got nowhere. So, I then tried using that trick NFC function. Nope, that didn’t work either—the reader was broken, too.

    Luckily, if you’re a member, Electrify America lets you remotely initiate a charging session through the app. Just locate your station on the map, pick out your specific charger, and slide the tab to start the power. Once I did that, the Chevrolet Bolt EUV started charging right away.

    But before that happened, I experienced another headache.

    Con: If you can’t pay quick enough, you’ll have to start over again

    It shouldn’t be shocking (sorry) to hear that DC fast-charging stations juice up EVs with high-voltage, large-current power. So, to keep you safe and the electrics from going up in smoke, both the chargers and cars have multiple security systems.

    For one, you can’t start charging an EV until the charging cable is firmly locked into place. Also, electricity isn’t the only thing that flows down that cable. Data does, too, to make sure the charger and EV are properly synced. If either software detects any kind of hiccup, it stops the charging session or doesn’t initiate it at all.

    On the plus side, my Chevrolet Bolt EUV didn’t experience any software issues or cable-locking problems. However, neither are the only things that can throw a wrench in a charging session. So can not flashing a credit card fast enough once the station and Bolt are fully linked up. That’s what happened when the credit card and NFC readers flaked out on me. And so, the station virtually kicked me out, which meant I had to unplug and re-plug the charger, then wait again for the station and Bolt to re-establish communication.

    I can fill up my 500 Abarth in less than five minutes. It took me over three times as long just to start charging the Chevrolet Bolt EUV.

    Pro: Even with a lot of remaining range, the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV charges quickly

    After I got the Electrify America charger going, the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV’s other strength came through. And that’s how (relatively) quickly it charges.

    Because the Bolt EUV was at 90% charge when I pulled up, for battery-health reasons, the 150-kW CCS charger only gave me 67 kW. But that’s still more than Car and Driver got out of a 350-kW DC station with its Chevrolet Bolt EUV tester. It’s also almost six times as much power as a 48-volt Level 2 charger can deliver.

    With that much power, it took 30 minutes for the Electrify America station to give my Bolt EUV 6.0 kWh. That’s roughly 23 miles of range going by the EPA’s numbers. Considering Chevrolet claims the Bolt EUV can get back up to 95 miles of range in 30 minutes on a DC charger, that seems low. But again, DC fast-charging only goes quickly if your battery is fairly low. Hence why Car and Driver got its Bolt EUV from 10-90% charge in 84 minutes.

    In addition, 30 minutes was enough time to finish shopping—I was at a mall, after all. And because I was naturally going to be away from my EV for some time, an extended charging period wasn’t an issue. Furthermore, when I plugged the Chevrolet Bolt EUV into my Level 1 outlet, it took 13 hours to get 30 miles of range. I’ll take 23 miles in 30 minutes over that any day.

    The best EV charger for Teslas

    If you drive a Tesla, this is your best option for at-home charging. It’s rated for up to 48 A of current, suitable for indoor and outdoor use, and backed by a two-year warranty. It also has a super-streamlined look, and its built-in cable organizer keeps its 24-foot cord neatly stored.

    Buying Options

    Not surprisingly, our testing showed that the best charger for a Tesla EV is Tesla’s flagship charger, the Tesla Wall Connector. It’s not our top pick for all drivers, because connecting it to a non-Tesla EV requires a pricey third-party adapter that isn’t designed for everyday use. (Plus, since Tesla sells more EVs than the other car companies combined, its chargers are in high demand and often out of stock.) But if you drive a Tesla, it’s the best option available with the company’s proprietary connector. Its maximum current rating of 48 A is among the highest of those we tested, and at this writing its price is one of the lowest.

    The Tesla Wall Connector is even slimmer and lighter than the Grizzl-E Classic, it has a super-sleek look, and it’s backed by Tesla’s two-year warranty. This charger has a 24-foot cord, just like the Grizzl-E Classic, and its built-in cable organizer is elegantly designed. It’s not quite as weatherized as our non-Tesla pick, but it’s still rated to provide ample protection against dirt, dust, and oils, splashes and sprays of water, and temperatures between.22° to 122° Fahrenheit.

    The biggest downside to this charger is that it lacks plug-in options, so you have to hardwire it into your home’s electrical system. That’s less convenient if you want to be able to move your charger without calling an electrician. But since hardwiring is generally preferable to plug-in installation anyway, we don’t consider this a fatal flaw.

    The research

    As the writer of this guide, I spent 28 hours researching and 85 hours testing EV chargers. I’ve been a science writer for more than nine years, covering a wide variety of topics, from particle physics to satellite remote sensing. Since joining Wirecutter, in 2017, I’ve reported on surge protectors, rechargeable batteries, power banks for phones and tablets, and more.

    In preparation to write this guide, I interviewed Paul Vosper (CEO of JuiceBar, a manufacturer of commercial EV charging stations founded in 2009) about the history and current landscape of the EV charging industry. I discussed the ins and outs of installing an EV charger in a private home or an apartment building with Tracy Price (CEO of Qmerit, a network of certified electricians specializing in the installation of EV chargers) and Caradoc Ehrenhalt (CEO of EV Safe Charge, an EV charger installation and consulting firm). To better understand the needs and concerns of EV drivers, I interviewed Joe Flores, deputy director at San José Clean Energy, a nonprofit electricity provider; Suncheth Bhat, director of clean energy transportation for the Pacific Gas and Electric (PGE) utility company; and Aaron August, PGE’s vice president of utility partnerships and innovation.

    If you’re in the process of buying an EV, and you want the fastest possible at-home charge right out of the gate, this is the guide for you. If you already own an EV, and you’re thinking about leveling up (literally) from a sluggish Level 1 charger to a speedier Level 2 charger, this guide is also for you. If you’re just here to learn, welcome! We hope you find what you’re looking for.

    Gas-powered vehicles might still rule the road, but global EV sales doubled in 2021, and analysts expect there to be 26 million EVs worldwide by the end of 2022. We can safely assume that these millions of EV drivers, despite having at least one thing in common, have widely varying lifestyles, needs, and priorities: They could be homeowners in single-family houses or renters in multi-unit apartment buildings. Or they might be remote workers who rarely leave the house or ride-share drivers clocking hundreds of miles a day. Maybe they pass dozens of charging stations along their daily route, or perhaps they live 90 miles from the nearest public charger.

    Regardless of your situation, though, having the most powerful EV charger possible at home will likely be a worthwhile investment. Per the U.S. Department of Transportation, a Level 1 charger can take days (40 to 50 hours) to charge an EV battery from empty to full, whereas a Level 2 charger can complete the same task in just four to 10 hours. Even if you don’t put many miles on your car, and topping off the battery overnight works for you most of the time, you still might want to have a charger at home that lets you juice up quickly in the event of a wildfire, flash flood, or other unforeseen disaster.

    In addition to faster charging times, Level 2 chargers often come with features you might not get from the charger that came with your EV, such as:

    • the option to hardwire the charger directly into your home’s electrical grid
    • a long cord that can reach across a two-car garage or carport
    • a smartphone app that supplements your EV’s app to track battery life, charge times, and more
    • a weatherproof enclosure to add protection from elements

    As is true of any home-improvement project, upgrading your EV charging setup will come at a cost. In addition to the sticker price of the charger, you’ll likely pay around 400 to 450,200 to have it professionally installed. You can circumvent some of these installation costs by buying a plug-in model, but if you don’t already have a 240 V outlet installed at your parking spot (they’re typically used for RVs or electric stovetops, among other things), you’ll still need to spend at least a few hundred dollars to take advantage of the Level 2 charger’s higher current. The silver lining here is that to help recoup the costs of going electric, many federal, state, and regional programs offer rebates and other incentives, including discounted rates for electricity usage during off-peak hours (which you can manage through your EV’s app or, if it has one, your EV charger’s app).

    If you rent your home and you’re unsure whether your rental agreement allows you to install a Level 2 charger, check your state’s “right to charge” laws. Likewise, if you own a home or rental property, the U.S. Department of Energy has a trove of resources explaining the various rules, regulations, and rudiments of installing EV chargers.

    ChargePoint Home Flex – Level 2 EV Charging Station (16-50 Amp)

    Probably the best Chevy Bolt Charger that you can buy is the ChargePoint Home Flex. Now the Chevy Bolt has an on-board charger that can support a charging rate of up to 11.5 kW and this EV Charging Station can match that. It is a 50 Amp Level 2 Charger that can deliver a 12 kW charging speed.

    You can either plug it into an existing wall socket, a NEMA 14-50 or NEMA 6-50 240-volt outlet but if you want to maximize its power it is better that you hardwire it directly to a 60 Amp Circuit breaker. Either way you’re going to achieve fast charging times.

    By our estimation, the ChargePoint at its peak power could charge a Chevy Bolt with the 65 kWh battery pack in about 6.5 hours. This doesn’t account for any kind of throttling that the on-board charger might apply in order to protect the battery in the long term.

    It comes with a charging cable that is 23ft long (7 meters) which will be compatible with your Bolt’s J1772 plug and most EVs in the US.

    This is a Smart charger with Wi-Fi connectivity. You can connect to it via your smartphone by downloading the ChargePoint app. This app is both useful at finding a public charging station from their large network but also remote controlling this home charging station.

    The app can provide you with key info on the charging process like the Amps, Voltage or how many miles of range per hour are being added. You can also check out a log of your previous charging sessions, control it via your voice through Amazon Alexa / Google Assistant to the degree that you can just ask it how much you’ve been spending this month on charging your EV.

    Of course, one of the essential functions is charge scheduling and it is there, you can schedule it to only charge during off-peak hours and that way you get to reduce your charging cost.

    The holster on this EV Charger is very well built since it makes it very easy for you to holster the connector and the backlight behind it will make it easy for you to find the charger in the dark. The entire enclosure is NEMA 3R rated, which makes it more fragile than other wall chargers and this is why we recommend installing it in a more secure place where there’s a lower chance of water getting to it.     Grizzl-E Classic Charger – Level 2 EV Charging Station (16-40 Amp)

    The Grizzl-E Classic takes a different approach to the Chevy Bolt Home Charger. If the ChargePoint is packed with Smart features, this one is not. It was designed to be easy to install and use, to just plug in and be done with it.

    This is a 40-Amp Level 2 charger that can achieve a 9.6 kW charging rate. The cable stretches out to be 24 feet long (7.3 meters) and uses an SAE J1772 connector. You can either plug this home charger for the Chevy Bolt into a NEMA 14-50 or 6-50 outlet or you can hardwire it directly.

    Now at this charging rate, we estimate that it will charge the Chevy Bolt with the same 65 kWh battery pack in about 7.5-8 hours which is still within the range of a good night sleep.

    Even though it does not have any kind of Wi-Fi connection or smartphone app, one of the main strengths of this particular EV home charger is its IP67 enclosure. This is as good as it can get in terms of sheer toughness and durability. This means you can throw it into the sea then take it out, dry it up and it will still work. It also comes with a 3-Year warranty from the manufacturer.

    ENEL X JuiceBox 40 – Level 2 EV Charging Station (40 Amp)

    The Enel X is one of our favorite chargers for Chevy Bolt EVs. It can output 40 Amps of electrical current at a 10 kW charging rate. It can be plugged into a NEMA 14-50 wall outlet or hardwired and it comes with a charging cable that stretches out to be 25 feet long.

    Because this has essentially the same charging rate as the Grizzl-E charger, you can expect the time to fully charge the Bolt to be essentially the same.

    There are plenty of Smart features too that you can access through the Juicenet app. It lets you set charging schedules for each day, find out exactly how fast the car is charging, what’s the status and battery level. You can also check out extensive reports with detailed graphs showing how much you’ve charged your EV each day and there’s a total metric that tells you how much CO2 you’ve saved since using your EV together with this charger.

    Of course, there is Alexa integration so you can use your voice to control it and it helps you keep track of charging costs which is essential.

    The enclosure is NEMA 4X rated which would equivalate to IP66, meaning that this is waterproof and dustproof up to a high extent. It is almost as tough as the previous one and comes with a 3-Year warranty.

    Mustart – Level 2 Portable EV Charger (40 Amp)

    The Mustart Level 2 Portable is our last Chevy Bolt EV Charger and the reason we chose to include it is because this is a different form factor. Often times you can have a charging station at home but also carry a portable one with you in case you need it.

    This is a 40-Amp charger that can deliver the same amount of power as these more powerful charging stations, 9.6 kW. You just plug it into a NEMA 14-50 or a 6-50 outlet, there’s no point to hardwire this since the ability to move it around is its greatest strength.

    There are no Smart features, you just get the charger with the 25ft J1772 cable and a control box that displays some key info on an LCD screen. However, you do get 2 buttons: one will let you cycle between different Amp settings and one will let you set a charging timer which basically tells the unit to start charging after a certain number of hours.

    The control box is IP65 rated and it comes with a 2-Year No-Hassle warranty. Even if you’ve a charging station for your Chevy Bolt, it is still a good idea to have one of these at hand.
