What Is A Power Bank Do You Need One for Your Phone?

With the amount of time we spend using our phones, the battery runs down, leaving us helpless. Since plugging in the phone to charge isn’t always feasible, we need a portable option to take with us when traveling or just dealing with our usual busy schedules.

The answer for many is a power bank.

Let’s learn all about power banks or portable battery packs today and see if you need one.

How Does A Power Bank Work?

A power bank’s built-in battery charges through an external power supply, such as a wall socket, then stores the energy in chemical form. When needed, the battery sends electrical energy to the connected device via the output port.

The process consists of three parts: energy absorbing, storing and releasing. It works similarly to a cell phone batter y, although a portable phone charger can be more complex and have more functions depending on its design.

What Is the Point of A Power Bank?

Power banks are rechargeable batteries like cell phone batteries. Back in those days, when our cell phone dies, we remove the back cover to replace a battery that’s full of juice. A power bank equals a battery pack. It charges your device on the go, especially when wall outlets are not available.

Battery packs can charge cell phones and other devices, such as laptops, speakers, and many others.

What are the Different Types of Power Banks?

Power banks vary in sizes, shapes, as well as the ways they charge or release energy.

The power bank size tends to be the most important criterion; the bigger the power bank, the higher the charging capacity (measured in mAh). capacity means more energy but also more weight.

Small-sized power banks (20,000mAh or below):

If you simply want a power bank to charge cell phones, 20,000mAh or below will do the job. The average battery capacity of recent cell phones is between 4,000 to 5,000mAh.

Large-sized power banks: (20,000mAh or above):

Anker powerhouse 120,000mAh

Although there are supposed 100,000mAh power banks on the market, their legitimacy is arguable. Larger ‘power banks’ range from between 40,000-60,000mAh and can be used to charge laptops, mini-fridges, and similar appliances and typically marketed towards campers. As you can imagine, those ‘power banks’ are usually the size of a car battery or bigger, clearly running counter to the purpose of a ‘portable’ phone charger.

After size, the next important consideration is how a power bank charges and releases energy.

Standard USB power banks:

The most common power bank works just like a USB charger. They charge using a USB charger or a built-in plug, and then they become the USB charger to recharge a device via a USB cable.

Wireless power banks:

Wireless power banks need to be charged through a USB cable, but they charge cell phones wirelessly, making the process more convenient. Unlike USB power banks that are restricted by cable type, wireless portable phone chargers can be used universally by all cellphones.

How Many Times Can A Power Bank Charge My Phone?

This depends on the capacity of the power bank and your mobile.

For example, the iPhone 11 battery has a 3,110mAh capacity. If the battery is flat and you charge it with a full 7,000mAh power bank, the power bank can charge the iPhone three times with 780mAh (7,000 – 31102=780mAh) remaining.

Well, this is only partially true. The general rule is that your power bank ‘s real capacity is around 2/3 of the theoretical capacity. A 10,00mAh power bank may only be around 6600mAh.

Are Power Banks Allowed on Planes?

Power banks are only allowed in carry-on luggage and should not exceed 100 watt-hours (Wh) per battery, around 26,315mAh. You will need to seek approval from the airline if your portable phone charger exceeds 100Wh, inevitably prolonging the check-in process.

How to Extend your Power Bank’s Life?

In a similar way to cell phone batteries, power banks have an average of 300-500 charge-discharge cycles. When a power bank uses up all its cycles, it needs to be thrown away, so ensuring you purchase a reliable, high capacity battery pack will elongate its charging life.

Your power bank’s life is also affected by how you use it. To make your power bank last a little longer, follow the following tips:

Charge your power bank when you’re not using it:

Rechargeable batteries age whether you use them or not, but they do age slower with some charge in them. If you plan on storing it away, charge it first. And don’t leave it unused for a long time as batteries slowly discharge and will degrade and loose capacity by and by.

Don’t expose it to extreme temperatures:

Batteries work best at temperatures between 5 and 25 degrees. In extreme scenarios, the battery inside a battery pack will lose its energy faster and may even pose safety risks.

Don’t drop your power bank:

Just like your cell phone, your portable phone charger also contains a circuit board, battery, and other components, so handle it with care.

What Are the Advantages of Power Banks?

Different types of power banks have different advantages. But all in all, they share the following merits.

Less anxiety

Low battery anxiety is real. But, with a power bank with you wherever you go, rest assured that you won’t have to stress over your battery ever again.

Affordable

Getting a power bank is indeed an inexpensive way to charge your phone or other devices quickly. In fact, many own more than one power bank because they often find the one they take with them is empty when they are out and because quality power banks are very affordable.

Customizable

Power banks come in a variety of sizes, colors, and designs. You can buy one according to your needs and preference. Or even personalize it.

What Are the Disadvantages of Power Banks?

Like phone batteries, power banks last longer when they are active. In other words, you have to charge them frequently to expand their lifespan. But the problem is, you don’t use a power bank as often as your mobile. So you have to remind yourself to charge it from time to time. And that’s difficult, to be honest. You may not remember where you put it the last time when you finished using it.

Most of the time, you only reach for your power bank when you’re about to leave for vacation. At that time, the power bank has gone flat as it self-discharges over time. Chances are you only realize that when you are away from home, with no access to wall outlets.

Can I Use My Phone While Charging? Top

There shouldn’t be any harm in using your cell phone while it is charging. You may notice your phone getting a bit warm, but this is expected. It’s worth noting, however, that using your phone while it is charging may not result in a 100% charged battery since you are actively using the power source before the charge is complete. If you want your cell phone to be fully charged, it’s best to leave it alone while it powers up!

Why Do Some Power Banks Take Longer to Charge? Top

Some power banks take longer to charge because larger batteries have a bigger capacity to store energy. For example, a high capacity power bank with 20,000 mAh can take up to 40 hours to charge fully. Smaller power banks with 4,000 mAh may only take a couple hours to charge.

Think of it like a shot glass versus a tall drinking glass. It’s going to take a lot longer for a drinking glass to fill with water than it will for the shot glass!

How Long Should You Charge a Power Bank? Top

You should only charge your power bank for the amount of time it takes for it to get a full battery. Once the device is fully charged, you should unplug it from the power source. You can check the user manual to find out how your power bank indicates it has been fully charged, but most of them have some sort of light that shows the amount of power left in the battery.

The amount of time it takes for a power bank to reach its full capacity varies depending on the type. A heavy-duty power bank will take longer to charge than a smaller one. Generally speaking, it takes between 1 to 2 hours for a power bank to become fully charged!

Did You Know?

There are super powerful power banks on the market that allow you to power larger devices like televisions, curling irons, and oscillating fans!

You should avoid charging your power bank overnight whenever possible. It is unlikely to cause significant damage, but there is still a chance it could reduce the lifespan of your battery over time.

For lower-quality power banks, leaving your power bank plugged in after it is fully charged can cause overheating, especially if they are left to charge in direct sunlight. The safest option is to always unplug your power bank once it has reached full capacity!

How Can You Make Your Phone Charge Faster? Top

If you ever find yourself in need of a quick battery charge for your smartphone, there are a few steps you can take to make your phone charge faster. Always make sure your charging cables are plugged all the way in and your power bank has enough power to charge your phone.

Here are some tips to make your phone charge faster:

  • Turn on airplane mode
  • Don’t use your phone while charging
  • Turn your phone off
  • Use a high-capacity power bank
  • Don’t use a wireless charger

Turn on Airplane Mode

Putting your phone on airplane mode is a surefire way to reduce charging time. This is because the setting turns off your phone’s Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular capabilities, which are all settings that drain your power! When your device is on airplane mode, it’s consuming less power, which makes for a quicker charge.

Don’t Use Your Phone While Charging

Using your phone while it’s charging is going to increase the amount of time it takes for your battery to be fully powered. It may be difficult to resist the urge to send that text message or check Instagram, but it’s worth the sacrifice if you want your phone to be fully charged!

Turn Your Phone Off

This strategy works similar to airplane mode because it turns off all the components in your phone that would otherwise be using your battery. When your phone is powered off, it’s able to reach a full charge much faster. Keeping your phone on while it’s charging is like trying to sleep while you’re hungry or thirsty—it’s going to be much more difficult!

Use a High-Capacity Power Bank

Some power banks are more powerful than others. The heavy-duty ones are going to make your phone charge much faster than the smaller ones! However, not all phones can handle a high-powered portable charger. It’s best to contact the manufacturer of your cell phone to see what they recommend. Charging your battery with too much power is never a good idea!

Don’t Use a Wireless Charger

Wireless chargers are a genius invention, but they’re not the best option if your goal is to charge your phone quickly. Plugging your phone in directly to a power bank or outlet is the quickest way to bring it back to life because it’s directly connected to the power source!

At the end of the day, any way you can prevent your phone from using battery while charging will ultimately help it charge faster! You might also notice your phone charging slowly with a low-capacity power bank. Be sure that your phone and power bank are compatible for the most efficient charging.

How Long Do Power Banks Last? Top

The amount of time a power bank lasts varies from product to product, but on average, a power bank should last at least a couple hundred charging cycles.

If you use your power bank frequently, you’re going to consume more charging cycles than someone who only uses their power bank occasionally. There are more durable power banks out there than can last upwards of 1,000 charging cycles, but most of the smaller ones on the market have a lifespan of 200 or 300 cycles. The age of the power bank also has a significant impact on how long it lasts. As the batteries inside of the device age, they become less effective.

How to Store a Power Bank Top

Power banks should always be stored in a cool location that isn’t exposed to direct sunlight, such as a desk drawer. According to Battery University, batteries achieve optimum service life if used at 68 degrees Fahrenheit, or slightly below that temperature.

If you store your power bank in direct sunlight or a warm environment like the glove box in your car, it won’t last as long. It’s also best to store your power bank in a pouch or case when not in use. This helps protect the charging ports so they do not accumulate dust or debris!

Should You Buy a Power Bank? Top

If you’re always on the go or find yourself with a low battery, you should buy a power bank! They come in handy during vacations, trade shows, plane rides, or any time you are using your phone away from an outlet. The type of power bank you’ll need depends on your lifestyle and how many devices you need to charge.

There’s no reason to not invest in a power bank. They’re like an extra insurance policy for your phone’s battery! Having one with you just in case is always a good idea.

The Bottom Line

Power banks make our lives a bit easier by ensuring we never run out of juice. By using them properly, you’re not only protecting the power bank, but you’re also getting the most out of your investment! A properly cared-for power bank will get you through those long meetings and plane rides. Just think of all the adventures you’ll go on while still having peace of mind!

The Types Of Power Banks

Different types of power banks are available, including solar power banks, universal power banks, wireless power banks, etc.

As the name suggests, the solar power bank relies on solar energy to charge the appliance. They consist of photovoltaic panels, an internal battery, and input/output ports that work together to power appliances. This is an excellent charging option, especially where you’re away from the primary power source. The best part about solar power banks is that they are a renewable energy source. Teaming them with solar panels can help you convert sunlight into electricity, which transfers to the device.

These portable power banks can be charged using standard USB sources such as USB chargers. Different sizes and configurations of universal power banks feature AC outlets, USB ports, etc.

They use Qi standard charging methods to power electronic devices wirelessly. First, the device to be charged is placed on the power bank (you can refer to the instructions on placement), and then the button is pressed to transfer the charge from the power bank to the device.

How Does A Power Bank Work?

If you’re thinking of buying a portable charging source like a power bank, you might have come across the question: what is a power bank, and how does it work? As we have covered the basics of a power bank, it’s time to unveil how it works.

Power banks work on a simple mechanism that includes source, storage, and usage. The power source charges the built-in battery, which transfers the current to the electrical device.

Most power banks come with an in-built battery that can be charged through an external power supply, such as a wall socket (AC power), car charger, solar panels (if it’s a solar power bank), etc.

The energy generated by the power source is stored in the portable battery to power up compatible appliances. The battery sends the stored electrical energy to the connected device using the output port.

Power Efficiency Power Capacity

Power efficiency and power capacity are often used interchangeably; however, they are different from each other.

Power efficiency is the ratio between a device’s useful energy output and input energy. That said, a power bank with a high power efficiency can convert more received energy into usable energy.

On the other hand, power capacity refers to the storage capacity of the power bank. It is measured in milliamp-hour (mAh) and determines how much charge a power bank can hold and how many times it can charge a device before depletion.

When choosing a power bank, it’s essential to consider power capacity and efficiency. This is because a power bank with high efficiency but lower capacity may not be as helpful as one with lower efficiency but higher capacity.

Here is how to calculate power capacity:

Power capacity (mAh) = Current (mA) Time (hour)

Suppose the power bank has a current of 1000 mA and can supply power for 10 hours; its power capacity will be 1000 mA 10 H = 10,000 mAh.

Note: This is a theoretical calculation. The practical power efficiency will be the same or less than 10,000 mAh, depending on external factors such as temperature and battery charge/discharge.

Low To High Capacity Power Banks

When buying portable charging sources, it’s vital to ask: what is a good capacity for a power bank? However, with different sizes and capacities of power banks available, it’s pretty challenging to choose the best one.

Below we’ve covered the popular low to high-capacity power banks in detail.

Buyers wanting an occasional power source for their smartphones can choose low-capacity power banks. Anything ranging from 1000-5000 mAh is considered a low-capacity power bank. These are the most compact power banks that can charge a smartphone once after full charging.

These power banks have a battery capacity of 7000 mAh to 20,000 mAh. These are reliable options for people looking to charge their phones multiple times a day. A medium power bank of 10,000 mAh can charge the iPhone 12 mini thrice after a full charge. On the other hand, a 20,000 mAh battery capacity can power a standard laptop, iPad Pro, etc.

Any power bank with more than 20,000 mAh falls into this category. They can support most of your portable appliances for a day.

What is a Power Bank?

We charge at home, at work and in our cars – praying that the dreaded low battery symbol doesn’t pop up. Having spent a fortune on low quality charging devices for every scenario we may find ourselves in and, subsequently, every single one of them breaking or not giving us 100% power, there has got to be a better solution.

Enter, the power bank, sometimes known as a charging bank. These compact bricks of seemingly endless power have the capacity to keep our batteries topped up for days. However, with so many variables across capacity, charging speed, and connectivity it can be hard to decide which power bank is best for your needs.

In this guide, we cover everything there is to know about power banks so you feel confident as a buyer and a user.

Undertanding power bank efficiency

Think of a power bank as a rechargeable portable battery. They are designed to facilitate the recharging of your devices on the go when you don’t have access to a mains supply or have your regular wall charger with you. Power banks range in size, from sleek and compact to larger high-capacity units. However, even the super mighty power banks are sophisticated and portable.

Power banks can be used to charge any device that is battery operated. This can include smartphones, tablets, wearable tech, cameras, console controllers, headphones and even laptops. With MAGFAST Extreme, our beast of a powerful portable bank, you can even jump start your car! Yes, really.

You can find out more about how to make your phone charge faster via our guide today.

How does a power bank work?

You can charge your power bank using a USB connection via a mains supply, or wirelessly if enabled. The charge is then stored in the power bank until it is withdrawn when you use it to charge a device. Whilst the capacity of each power bank is different, they eliminate the need to carry a regular, mains-power charger with you because power banks can store enough energy for multiple charges.

Whilst power banks may appear unassuming, there is complex circuit technology stored inside. Besides recharging your devices, they also have safety features to prevent overcharging and short-circuiting, as well as quick charging and wireless technology.

Power bank capacity

All power banks are different even though, on the surface, many look similar. Typically, when it comes to discussing power bank batteries, units will fall into one of two categories focused on lithium technology. All power banks use rechargeable batteries, but one may use lithium-ion whereas another may use lithium-polymer. The most significant difference between the two types is the chemical electrolyte between their positive and negative electrodes. This boils down to lithium-ion holding a higher power density and a lower cost compared to lithium-polymer. However, lithium-polymer batteries are more robust, flexible, and have a lower chance of suffering with leaking electrolyte.

Both forms of battery work effectively and have their pros and cons. However, it will largely depend on the design and manufacturing of a power bank as to whether it delivers the charge you need.

Below, MAGFAST highlights the most important points to consider when purchasing a new power bank.

How is power bank capacity calculated?

Power bank capacity is measured in milliampere hours (mAh). The higher the number of mAh the more charge the power bank holds for you to withdraw when you use it to charge your devices. Once the power bank capacity has been drained it will need to be charged up again. The general rule of thumb dictates that smaller power banks have a typical capacity of 1,000 mAh and medium units have 3,000 to 5,000 mAh. Larger power banks can reach 10,000 mAh.

What sets MAGFAST apart from other power bank manufacturers is our ability to deliver serious power. MAGFAST Life is our neat, portable power bank that is great for life ‘on the go’. Whilst its counterparts have an average capacity of 1,000 mAh, Life has a capacity of 6,000 mAh. That’s enough power to charge a dead iPhone battery twice.

At the opposite end of the scale is MAGFAST Extreme – the one that can jump-start your car. Extreme is a super-charger with the power to boost your battery life for days due to its staggering 18,500 mAh capacity. It is also the world’s first portable charger with three Qi wireless charger stations – ideal for all your devices or when sharing with family or friends.

Both MAGFAST Life and Extreme have four ways to get power in. Life has five ways to get power out whereas Extreme has six: the added bonus of Extreme is the 12volt 500amp outlet. This means you can use MAGFAST Extreme to jump-start your vehicle over, and over, and over again. Simply invest in MAGFAST’s 12v jumper cables to accompany Extreme and you can rest assured you’ll never be stranded with a dead vehicle battery.

Whilst Extreme has the endurance to provide you with power for days, there are different power banks available with MAGFAST to suit your capacity requirements.

Do I need a phone power bank?

Do you often find yourself running out of phone battery during the day? Are you sick of having to hunt for a mains-power socket when the dreaded warning pops up? Having a charged smartphone is important, particularly when on the go. There are an immense number of scenarios when we need to stay connected, such as for meetings, directions, studying, or socializing. Power banks enable you to charge your device on the go without the need for a mains supply, whether you’re in the car, on the train, at the airport, or even on an airplane.

Can I take my power bank on a flight?

Taking your power bank on a flight is acceptable. However, there are conditions in place for the safety of crew and passengers.

  • Power banks must be stored in your hand luggage
  • The battery should be 100 Wh or under
  • Batteries between 100 Wh and 160 Wh will need a special permit
  • The Wh output should be visible on the device

MAGFAST’s super-charger, Extreme, has a 68.45 Wh battery, making it perfectly fine to use on an aircraft as long as it is stored in your carry on. All of MAGFAST’s power banks, including Life, Extreme, Apple Watch charger Time and car phone charger MAGFAST Road can be taken onboard.

Wireless charging power bank

Qi is the most popular type of wireless charging and it is the universally agreed global standard. This is why all of MAGFAST’s power banks facilitate Qi wireless charging of your enabled devices. What makes MAGFAST’s products so unique is they offer all the above in terms of Qi wireless charging, whilst also providing unparalleled battery power and complete portability. Simply ensure the power bank of your choice is energized and you’ll be able to charge wirelessly on the go.

USB power bank

Power banks aren’t magic, but they do have technology aboard that is simply miraculous. They need charging to do their job so we can’t simply eliminate the need for a wired power source altogether. Furthermore, at MAGFAST we appreciate that not everyone owns wireless devices, and it’s important that everyone can experience our unique power banks and other charging products.

When shopping for a new power bank you should ensure it has the input and output ports that you need. Today, we are blessed with numerous ways to deliver and withdraw power.

MAGFAST’s power banks are super simple to charge, and you won’t need any extra wires to do so. There is our wireless charging function, as well as the ability to plug in a USB-C cable or micro-USB. Lastly, you could magnetically snap a product – such as MAGFAST Life – to the likes of MAGFAST Road to charge up your portable power supply whilst on the go via the 12v car input.

I need a power bank with outlet

With MAGFAST’s power banks there are a minimum of four ways to charge up your battery source. In terms of using MAGFAST’s portable power banks to charge your devices, there are a minimum of five ways to boost your battery. There’s also an added extra with MAGFAST Extreme and Life – there’s also a hidden built-in mini-cable that comes free with any power bank. This is supplied as a USB-C cable. However, micro-USB and Lightning cables are available as extras directly from MAGFAST.

You might not notice our USB-C mini-cable at first. It’s neatly stored in our beautiful casing and has a magnetic closure so you can simply snap it back into position when not required. It was important for us to include a USB-C connection as it is recognised as one of the most common charging connections for many devices. Should the neat mini-cable attachment not be enough, a longer output cable can be plugged into the MAGFAST USB-C fast charging outlet. There’s also the USB-A output as standard and the 12v hi-intensity supply with Extreme only.

MAGFAST is unlike any other power bank manufacturer. We are dedicated to developing products that not only deliver on style, power and portability, but that also give our customers exactly what they need from a power bank.

Do you need a fast-charging power bank?

Remember the days when it took all night to charge your smartphone? Or when you had to keep your laptop constantly plugged in? Fast charging has changed the game and allowed us to go from zero to a full capacity battery charge in no time at all. It all boils down to voltage and amperage. Manufacturers can tweak either of these elements – subsequently upping the total wattage – to make a device charge quicker. The higher the wattage the quicker the charge.

You may have noticed that some of the chargers accompanying your devices have ‘fast charge’ displayed on them. This is great, but what happens if you need a quick boost of energy whilst out and about? What if you don’t have your fast charger with you? Or a plug socket? This is where MAGFAST’s power banks shine. All MAGFAST’s products are supplied with fast charge technology. This means you can not only use your power bank to charge on the go, but if you have a fast-charge compatible device it will do so super quick.

How do I know if my device can fast charge?

Your device can only withdraw as much energy from a power bank as the charging circuit within it is designed for. If you have a smartphone with a circuit built for 5V/1A, it will not handle the wattage of 5V/2A and won’t charge any quicker than usual. You will be able to check the fast-charging standard of your device by looking at the specifications or user manual.

Never worry about running out of battery ever again

We are sure that, one day, you’ll be able to charge your devices with your own pulse – or something equally mind-boggling. Until then, power banks are a pivotal solution for delivering power time and time again to keep your devices charged on the go. Gone are the days of battery anxiety. Now, as a true power bank expert, you can make an informed decision on the best solution for you. We don’t mean to be biased, but with MAGFAST changing charging for good, we know our power banks can deliver above and beyond your needs.
