Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to the frequently asked questions about solar batteries.

Do I Need a Solar Battery?

Not all people may appreciate the need for a solar battery, but if you’re someone who quickly burns power for your personal gadgets and devices due to consistent use, you would surely appreciate the need for solar batteries. Conventional power banks may give you the temporary power source to charge your mobile phones, but regular recharging of multiple devices will quickly drain power banks, leaving you with no more extrsource of power to recharge. If you have a solar battery that recharges using the free energy from sunlight, you are guaranteed that you’ll have enough power to last for days and weeks, even when there are no power outlets around to recharge the power bank. So, this makes it a practical power source on the go during weeklong travels, camping, hiking, and other outdoor activities.

What Should I Consider When Shopping for Solar Battery Banks?

When shopping for a home solar battery bank, there are a few essential items in the specifications that you need to check to ensure you’ll get the best value for your money while giving you the best possible experience with the product. One of them is the rated capacity. The higher the capacity, the longer the charging hours you will get. This leads to another factor, which is deciding for your intended use. If you’re buying a power bank to recharge your smartphone once or twice daily, you’ll do good with a 10000mAh power bank. If you charge several times in a day for several devices, you may have to go for a higher-capacity solar battery bank. Another important factor is the charge cycle, which is the number of times you can charge devices with your battery bank until it goes dead. Some battery banks can recharge up to 500 times, while others can do more. Another notable feature is the type of output port, such as USB, Type-C, and micro USB. Make sure they’re compatible with your Android or iOS device. Other vital variables are a brand, price, waterproof and shockproof features, and more.

How Much Do Solar Batteries Cost in 2021?

Standard solar battery banks shouldn’t cost you more than a hundred bucks these days in 2021. In fact, the most affordable with nice features you can get will only cost a little less than 30 on the market. However, batteries with higher rated capacities of 20000mAh will cost you more at around 50–70 bucks. If you, however, opt for much higher capacity ratings, the cost will go upward in hundreds of dollars. If you’re unsure how many milli-amp hours you need, you can use a solar battery bank calculator to compute the right capacity suitable for your everyday power needs.

With a few small improvements, the OutXE Power Bank could be the perfect portable charger for hiking outdoors.

I’ve had the OutXE power bank for almost a month now, I’d have normally tested and reviewed it weeks ago. However, I purposely delayed the review for a chance to use it on a hiking trip. I got back yesterday. I’m sleep deprived, my back’s aching and my legs are sore but I’m really excited to tell you guys all about this product!

Design and Build

The PCPB8000 OutXE power bank comes in a quality retail box along with a carabiner, a USB charging cable, and user guide. The unit is the same shape as a smartphone except for the carabiner attachment. Its housing has well-rounded sides and neatly beveled edges.

Its length and width are practically identical to my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and it’s surprisingly thin too. At only 15mm (just over half an inch) I’m amazed there’s room for 8000mAh of batteries sandwiched between the LED lights and the solar panel.

The micro USB input is found on the right side, the power button’s on the left and there are USB outputs are on the bottom.

Between the ports, there are four blue battery status indicators and a single green LED that lights up whenever the OutXE power bank is drawing a solar charge from the sunlight.

The front face has 32 individual LED lights that measure 15mm square. The rear of the power bank features a solar panel which is set slightly back from the edge of the case. This should prevent it from being scuffed when laid on surfaces.

The overall design and build quality are just about as good as it gets. The only downside for me are the exposed ports. A soft rubber cover would have offered protection from dust and water.

Features and Specs

Power Bank

The OutXE power bank has a capacity of 8000mAh, this equates to roughly two complete charges of most modern smartphones. It will output up to 2.1A from a single port and has absolutely no problem charging two mobile devices at the same time.

Solar Panel

The solar panel has a maximum efficiency rate of 300mA which is impressive for such a small unit. On a bright day with the OutXE power bank clipped to your backpack, you could achieve around 20% of additional charge.

On the second day of my hike, I fully depleted the power bank charging two smartphones. I clipped the OutXE to the tent and let it soak up the last of the sun for a couple of hours. This short charge was enough to provide us with light around the camp that night.

LED Camp Light

In my opinion, the LED light on this unit is the best I’ve ever seen from a compact power bank. I’ve used plenty of portable chargers with built-in LED lights, but never like this one. It’s so damn bright, if you were to look directly at it, you’d be seeing a checkerboard of purple spots in front of your eyes for a long time.

Even on the lower setting, the OutXE provided ample light around camp. I had the unit tucked into a thin white plastic bag to diffuse the light a little and it worked perfectly.

The light is activated by the button on the side of the unit. One press for bright, another drops it to normal and a third activates the strobe.

Unfortunately, you need to pass through modes to turn it off. Ideally, it would’ve been better to long press it off, rather than cycle through the strobe.

It’s fairly rare these days that I get an opportunity to make improvements to my hiking gear, my kit’s pretty dialed in. With dozens of awesome power banks and LED camping lights to choose from, the OutXE power bank certainly had some stiff competition.

I’m happy to say that it’s earned its spot as my new hiking power bank of choice and totally done away with the need for a separate lighting solution for around the camp. I’ve made a weight and space saving without any compromise on my set up. I think the 8000mAh capacity is the sweet spot for a weekend hike, any longer and I’d probably have to take a larger capacity power bank.

Is it the perfect hiking power bank?

Not quite, but it’s damn close. If I had some input on the next model, I’d introduce covers over the ports for an IP-rating. I’d also introduce a memory to the light and a long press to turn it off from its current brightness setting. Finally, I’d introduce Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 technology. That being said, even without those improvements, the OutXE power bank is still an awesome product and at the current price, it’s an absolute bargain.

Things to consider when choosing a solar power bank:

Before selecting a power bank there are some criteria it needs to meet for me to be happy with my purchase. The following are all things I keep into account when choosing a power bank.

Charging capacity

The most important factor for me is charging capacity. Before I add something to my backpack I want to know exactly how much extra battery life it’s going to give me.

How long does it take to charge?

After charging capacity, this is the second most important criteria for me.

I want to know how many times I’ll be able to charge my phone, GoPro, iPad or other electronics, but also how long I have to wait for it to be fully charged and ready to go.

This is part of the reason why I prefer solar power banks to normal chargers. While the solar charging usually takes longer than if it was plugged into a socket, it provides an extra top up while you’re out and about.

Weight size

This is going to be an essential factor for minimalist packers. You don’t want to be carrying around something huge that will take up space for other things from your bag.

Smaller power banks usually have less charging capacity though; you need to find the perfect balance.

Additional features

Who doesn’t love additional features? While the main characteristic for a power bank is obviously the need for it to charge things, if it comes with some useful extras, that’s always a brownie points in its favour.

The OUTXE Solar Charger Reviewed

The OUTXE Solar Charger is a solar power bank designed for active outdoors people. It has a powerful charging capacity, efficient solar panels, and is waterproof and rugged to resist any shocks during your outdoor activities.

Charging capacity: The OUTXE Solar Charger has a 20,000mAh capacity (I’m not a techy person but I’ve been told that’s a lot)!

It can charge an iPhone to 100% around 7 times, sometimes more depending on how charged it was when you plugged it in. It has dual input so that you can charge more than one device at a time.

How long does it take to charge? If you charge it with the cable and plug it into a power socket it will fully charge in 6 hours.

It’s ideal as you can plug it to charge at night and it will be ready to go in the morning. Reaching a full charge on solar panels alone would take 40 hours though, depending on the solar conditions.

The panels are built for high conversion efficiency, however it is still easier and quicker to charge it from a power socket.

For me the solar panels are source of additional energy top up while being out and about more than the main charging source.

Weight size: The OUTXE Solar Charger is 15cm x 8cm x 2cm and weighs 520g. It’s slightly bigger than an iPhone and somewhat heavier.

However for the kind of power and charging capacity it provides it’s still considered lights. I hate carrying around heavy things but it’s well worth the extra weight for the charging power it has.

Additional features: The OUTXE Solar Charger is waterproof, dustproof and shock resistant. It’s built to be used outdoors, so that if you get caught in a rainstorm while hiking or drop it at the beach, it shouldn’t be affected.

It also has a LED flashlight with three different light modes that can be used if you’re camping overnight. Overall the OUTXE Solar Charger meets all of my solar power banks criteria.

Is the OUTXE solar charger worth it?

It’s a bit heavy but the charging capacity it provides is worth the extra weight, especially if you attach it to the outside of your bag so that it can recharge while you’re out and about without taking up space in your backpack.

It also doesn’t take too long to charge when you plug to a power source and has some nice additional features like the flashlight.

If you have recommendations for other solar power banks let me know, I’d love to hear your advice! I hope you’ve found this review of the OUTXE Solar Charger useful in helping you decide what solar power bank you should purchase.

I’m personally very happy with my OUTXE solar charger and can highly recommend it.

If you’re looking for a powerful solar power bank that can keep you going for a while, doesn’t require too long to charge and isn’t massive, this is the one for you.

The most well-equipped powerbank? OUTXE Savage Rugged Charger hands-on

Durability is important. While the sacrifices made in the name of form versus function often leave us more vulnerable than we’d like when it comes to our mobile devices, we thankfully don’t have to make such trade-offs with our portable chargers, that is, if we don’t want to. Portable chargers, especially those packing upwards of 10,000 mAh’s of charge, are already pretty bulky devices, so why not toughen them up properly? That’s the approach that OUTXE takes with its 20,000-mAh Savage Solar Charger. This portable charging powerbank offers QuickCharge for your devices, charges itself in under 6 hours, is IP67 water-resistant, has been fortified with tough plastic and thick rubberized corners, and has the ability to recharge itself from the good ol’ natural sun via solar-panel. As if all that isn’t enough to pique your interest, this powerbank retails for only 55. So, naturally, we had to plug in and see if this charger is all that it strives to be.

Just looking at the Savage Solar Charger, you get the impression that it belongs outdoors. The 2W solar-panel, which comprises the entire face of the accessory, is one big giveaway, but the thick plastic, rubberized red corners, and two built-in straps – to which the included carabiners can be connected – really put the finishing touches on the look. LED indicators also exist to show current charge capacity. This powerbank isn’t just about looking like an outdoor accessory; it truly is one. IP67 water-resistance and a built-in, six-LED flashlight with SOS modes (activated by double-clicking the power button) add to its resilience and versatility as a tool for outdoor adventure. Rubber seals cover the four ports on this device, of which there are two inputs, one micro-USB, the other USB-C, and two USB-A outputs, one QuickCharge-enabled, and the other regular.

For all its bulk and ruggedness, it actually looks pretty cool. It’s a substantial device in the hand, but really any 20,000-mAh powerbank will be. It does feel like it could handle a drop better than any non-fortified charger, though, so it’s nice to have that added security.

Aside from superior durability, the Savage Solar Charger adds some useful conveniences in functionality, as well. Firstly, this will be one of the quicker-charging powerbanks, especially at this size. Dual 4-amp inputs – one micro-USB, the other USB-C – enable this 20,000-mAh monster to recharge from zero to 100 in about 6 hours, a pretty impressive time for that much juice. Of course, we can’t forget the huge solar-panel on the Savage, but without any quoted recharge times from the company, it’s safe to say that this charging option is best left for emergency scenarios. It’s still pretty nice to have this option, though – just in case.

As far as its charging prowess goes, the Quick Charge output is capable of charging up to 18 watts for compatible devices. This breaks down to 2.4A at 5V, 3A at 9V, and 2A at 12V, while the regular USB-A output charges 2.4A at 5V max. Suffice it to say, this charger can power up most phones at, or near their highest charging rate, making no apparent sacrifices and covering all its bases in the most primary use of this device.

The Savage Solar Charger seems to pack versatility in a variety of ways. Not only is it ruggedized and tweaked for the outdoor lifestyle, but the internals are geared towards charging a range of devices and doing so quickly. To top it all off, this powerbank takes a page out of its own book and facilitates a pretty speedy recharge for itself, clocking in at 6 hours for 20,000 mAh. Selling for only 55, it’s hard to see why anyone in the market for a large-capacity portable charger wouldn’t choose the one that charges quick, juices other devices quicker, and can survive a drop in water or on the ground. Oh, and it solar charges too! Pretty sweet deal for under 60.
