In alcuni casi, la capacità dei power bank viene espressa in watt-ora (Wh). Per ricavare il valore di Wh compatibile con quello di smartphone e tablet, bisogna dividere il valore per 5 (cioè 5V): [numero Wh]/5.

Ovviamente, a una maggiore capacità dei power bank equivale anche un allungamento dei tempi di caricamento di questi ultimi, quindi se acquisterai un power bank molto capiente preparati a spendere tanto tempo per caricarlo!
Forma, dimensioni e peso
I power bank possono avere diversi form factor: ci sono quelli a forma di rossetto, quelli rettangolari spessi poco più di una carta di credito, quelli più robusti e capienti che potremmo definire come delle “scatolette”, e l’elenco potrebbe andare avanti a lungo. Devi solo scegliere in base alle tue preferenze.
Il discorso è diverso per quanto concerne peso e dimensioni. Come facilmente intuibile, i power bank più grandi e più pesanti sono quelli che permettono di dare una carica maggiore ai propri dispositivi. Questo significa che se hai bisogno di un power bank da usare in viaggio (o comunque in situazioni in cui starai molto a lungo senza la disponibilità di prese elettriche), devi mettere da parte la portabilità, la leggerezza e devi pensare unicamente al numero dei mAh: potresti aver bisogno di effettuare più cariche complete a smartphone e tablet, e questo è fattibile solo con batterie dall’amperaggio elevato.
Se, invece, hai bisogno di una batteria da tenere sempre in tasca per dare una “botta di vita” ai tuoi device nelle situazioni d’emergenza, tralascia pure il numero dei mAh e acquista un power bank estremamente compatto e sottile da tenere nella tasca dei pantaloni senza fastidi.
Tieni in considerazione anche i materiali costruttivi e la resistenza del power bank ad acqua, urti e polvere. Se ti trovi spesso in situazioni “estreme” o che, comunque, possono risultare pericolose per la salute dei dispositivi elettronici, acquista un power bank rivestito in modo tale da resistere a cadute in acqua, schizzi, cadute e quant’altro.
Nelle situazioni estreme (o in banali campeggi) possono tornare utili anche i power bank a energia solare, i quali includono dei pannelli solari grazie ai quali riescono a ricaricarsi senza l’ausilio della presa elettrica. In maniera molto lenta, ma ci riescono!
Porte e potenza
Come detto anche in precedenza, i power bank possono essere equipaggiati con un numero variabile di porte. Quelli con una porta sola permettono di caricare un solo dispositivo alla volta, quelli con più porte permettono di ricaricare più dispositivi alla volta, ma ci sono anche tante altre differenze di cui bisogna tener conto.
Innanzitutto, bisogna dire che le porte possono essere di input o di output: quelle di input permettono di caricare il power bank stesso. Quelle di output, invece, sono quelle a cui bisogna collegare i dispositivi da ricaricare (smartphone, tablet ecc.).
Bisogna poi fare i conti con il formato delle porte. La maggior parte dei power bank offre porte di tipo USB A (quindi di tipo USB standard) attraverso le quali ricaricare i più comuni modelli di smartphone e tablet. Poi ci sono le porte microUSB, che spesso vengono usate per la ricarica dei power bank stessi, e le porte USB Type-C, che invece vengono usate per ricaricare alcuni modelli di smartphone, computer portatili (es. i MacBook) e console per videogiochi (es. Nintendo Switch) di ultima generazione.
Un capitolo a parte meritano le porte Lightning di Apple, che non servono per ricaricare iPhone e iPad (quelli si possono ricaricare normalmente con qualsiasi porta USB in formato standard) ma, se presenti, permettono di ricaricare il power bank usando lo stesso cavo utilizzato per gli iDevice (quindi inserendo la presa Lightning nel power bank e la presa USB che c’è sull’altro capo del cavo nel caricatore collegato alla presa elettrica).
Prima abbiamo accennato all’energia erogata dal power bank. Ebbene, devi sapere che ciascuna porta di un power bank può erogare un quantitativo di energia differente. Questa energia viene misurata in Ampere (A) e influisce sui tempi di caricamento dei dispositivi. Ad esempio, ci sono porte da 1A che caricano i dispositivi a una certa velocità e porte da 2.1A o 2.4A che caricano i dispositivi in maniera più rapida, in quanto riescono ad erogare un quantitativo maggiore di energia verso questi ultimi.
Affinché la ricarica sia effettivamente più rapida, però, anche il dispositivo di destinazione deve essere compatibile con il livello di potenza del power bank. In altre parole: se hai uno smartphone che supporta la carica fino a 1A e lo colleghi a una porta da 2.1A o 2.4A, non si caricherà più velocemente perché assimilerà energia sempre a 1A (e questo gli permetterà anche di non danneggiarsi, in quanto limiterà automaticamente il quantitativo di energia da assorbire e non andrà a sovraccaricare la batteria). Al contrario, se hai uno smartphone che supporta la carica a 2.1A o 2.4A e lo colleghi a una porta 1A la carica sarà più lenta di quella fornita dal caricatore standard del telefono.
Altra cosa importante da sapere è che nei power bank equipaggiati con più porte, se si utilizzano due o più porte in contemporanea, la potenza complessiva di output viene suddivisa tra queste ultime. Ciò significa che se compri un power bank in grado di erogare una potenza complessiva di 4A e colleghi ad esso più dispositivi in contemporanea, l’energia verrà suddivisa tra le varie porte (es. 2A su due porte o 1A su quattro porte).
Per quanto concerne i sovraccarichi, non ti preoccupare: ormai tutti i power bank dispongono di un sistema di sicurezza che interrompe l’erogazione di energia in caso di sovraccarico o cortocircuito. Inoltre il rischio di sovraccarichi è molto limitato in quanto i power bank riescono a “riconoscere” automaticamente i device collegati alle loro porte ed erogano un quantitativo di energia adeguato alla loro ricarica senza mai superarlo.
Supporto QuickCharge
Rimanendo in tema di energia erogata, ti segnalo che se hai uno smartphone Android dotato di tecnologia QuickCharge di Qualcomm e vuoi ricaricarlo alla massima velocità possibile, devi acquistare un power bank dotato del supporto a tale tecnologia.
Non sai di cosa sto parlando? In questo caso non dovresti aver bisogno di un power bank con supporto QuickCharge.
