What Differentiates Lithium-Ion Batteries From Others?

Before we get into specifics, you should know that there are a few different types of lithium technology — regular lithium, lithium-ion and lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4 — also known as LFP). Standard lithium batteries are not rechargeable and, therefore, not fit for solar.

We already use lithium-ion technology in common rechargeable products like cell phones, golf carts and electric vehicles. Most lithium-ion solar batteries are deep-cycle LiFePO4 batteries. They use lithium salts to produce a highly efficient and long-lasting battery product. Since they are deep-cycle batteries, the products do very well even when the attached solar panels experience inconsistent charging and discharging.

Before Tesla developed its Powerwall I lithium-ion solar battery 2015, most solar batteries used lead-acid battery banks. There are now many lithium-ion solar batteries on the market, allowing a range of options for homeowners and their various needs.

Best Times to Use Lithium-Ion Batteries

The best battery type for your solar system will depend on several factors, like what your system powers, if you are on or off-grid, and how often the system is used.

  • Lithium-ion solar batteries are currently the best solar storage method for everyday residential use. The batteries are highly dense and store a considerable amount of energy without taking up much space.
  • Although lithium-ion batteries come with a higher price tag, the technology works best for everyday residential use. It is maintenance-free and more cost-effective than other options in the long run.
  • Lead-acid batteries cost less upfront but require regular maintenance to keep them running properly. If you are only using a solar battery as a small-scale emergency backup power storage, it might not be worth the upfront cost of a lithium-ion battery.
  • Lead-acid batteries are popular for DIY or off-grid solar power systems that aren’t used regularly, like on a vacation cabin or an RV. Keep in mind that if you go that route, you’ll also need to purchase charge controllers as a battery management system (BMS).

For example, the Tesla Powerwall II has a 100% depth of discharge (or so it advertises), which theoretically means that you can use 100% of the energy in the battery before it has to be recharged (we believe that it’s closer to 80% — fully draining the Powerwall between charges will significantly lower the battery life).

Lithium-ion batteries have a high depth of discharge, meaning homeowners can use more stored energy without having to charge it as often. Lithium-ion batteries can handle discharging around 80% of their charge before needing to be refilled, as opposed to a lead-acid battery, which should only be run to 50% depth of discharge.

How Many Batteries Do I Need For Solar?

An important thing to consider when installing a solar panel system is whether or not you want to add batteries for energy storage capabilities. There are many benefits that come with owning a battery, such as avoiding peak electricity costs, minimizing your carbon footprint, and having access to electricity during an outage.

Well, home solar batteries come in different sizes, so it may be more appropriate to figure out what capacity, power, and other specifications you need and then go from there. You should account for factors like your daily energy consumption, the specifications of your battery, and what the primary purpose of your home battery will be.

In most cases, people use their batteries to store excess energy for use at night or times when their panels are not generating any electricity. Therefore, most solar panel owners will only need enough stored power for one evening of use.

About Home Batteries

To figure out what type and how many batteries you need, you must first understand some details about home batteries themselves. There are 3 main factors that will influence the solar panel owner’s decision about a home battery:

Capacity The capacity is the total amount of electricity that the battery can store. This is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh) and represents how big the battery is. For example, Tesla Powerwall 2 has a 13.2 kWh capacity. Check this video to know more about kilowatt hours.

Power Rating The power rating for a solar battery is the amount of electricity that can be delivered at once. This is measured in kilowatts (kW) and directly impacts that quantity of electricity that can be drawn from the battery. So, if you want a battery that can power many of your household appliances and devices at once, you will need a high power rating. Depth of Discharge (DoD) The DoD is simply the amount of charge that was used by a battery. For example, if the battery has a 30% charge left, then the DoD is 70%. The reason why the DoD is important is that due to the chemical composition of some home batteries, you must ensure the DoD never gets to 100%. This means that for most home batteries, you will need the capacity to be slightly larger than the maximum amount actually needed.

Enough Batteries For The Evening

Now that we have the details, we can begin to look at the main use case for home batteries.

For the average home solar panel system, a battery serves as a backup for the evening and late night when the sun is down. To get an idea of how many batteries you need, all you need to do is figure out how much energy you use within this time-frame and find a battery that can deliver that quantity of kW to your home.

If the average monthly electricity consumption by a US household is around 900 kWh. then the amount of electricity that a household uses in one day is around 30 kWh. If we narrow this further to just the evenings, this is likely anywhere between 5-10 kWh that is being used.

What this means is that to meet the typical energy needs for this time frame, you will need a battery that is around 10 kWh in capacity with a power rating of at least 5 kW.

Batteries can be found in sizes ranging from under 2 kWh up to 16 kWh or more. They can even be connected together for a doubling of capacity.

Home battery power ratings can vary widely from battery to battery, and there are even incentives for some batteries that total in the thousands of dollars.

Therefore a 100 Amp hour battery operating at 6 Volts can store 600 watt hours, or 0.6 kWh, of DC power. With a 50% depth-of-discharge (DOD) rate to extend the battery life, the 100 Ah battery could deliver 0.3 kWh of daily DC power. Compare this to how many kWh you use everyday.

What is the difference between AGM and Gel batteries?

Both AGM and Gel batteries utilize oxygen recombination and pressure relief valves to minimize water loss and allow maintenance-free operation. That is where the similarities end. AGM batteries have the advantage of being mountable in any orientation without capacity loss, have lower internal impedance to support high load currents, and have better capacity at low temperatures. Gel batteries must be mounted upright to prevent air s from forming that will burn out the plates. They have inferior performance at high discharge rates and low temperatures.
