Bluetti solar generator expert review: choose the right one for you
Bluetti is a 3-year-old brand that primarily makes portable solar generators, battery backup systems, and foldable solar panels. Their products use LiFePO4 battery technology, which is currently regarded as the best kind of lithium battery on the market and has proven quite popular in the DIY and van life communities, allowing people to power important devices and appliances in off-grid situations.
We recently tested some Bluetti products to see how well they use solar power to keep the batteries charged and ready to deliver power to all sorts of energy-hungry devices. We found our Bluetti power bank and solar panel to be up to many important jobs around the yard, the house, and even in the wilderness.

Bluetti’s key value proposition comes from its use of Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries. This combination of chemicals (LiFePO4, or LFP for short) makes Bluetti’s batteries more stable, longer lasting, and less environmentally harmful than typical lithium nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries used by other popular solar generators. Bluetti says its LFP batteries can be cycled 2,500 (EB series) to 3,500 (AC and B series) times before being reduced to 80% of their original capacity, compared to other brands’ 500-cycle lifespan.
The next feature common to Bluetti‘s Portable Power Stations is solar input. From the entry-level EB3A to the flagship AC200P, comes with an MPPT solar charge controller built-in, allowing the battery to get the most from solar panels. Bluetti makes its own foldable solar panel, but also provides standard MC4 connections so any compatible solar array can be used to charge its batteries (with allowable input wattage that differs for each of its products).
Finally, Bluetti includes a pure sine wave inverter in each of its batteries and provides multiple DC and AC outlets to provide options for powering devices. Typical outlets include USB-A, USB-C, 120V AC, and 12V DC. In addition, all Bluetti Portable Power Stations come with 15W wireless charging pads built into the top of the unit.
How a Bluetti Solar generator works
In order to provide a good review of Bluetti’s Portable Power Stations, we purchased a Bluetti EB55 along with a PV120 foldable solar panel. With this pair of products, you can provide power to numerous devices away from home, and even provide yourself some peace of mind in the event of a power outage.
We found the EB55 to be a well-built, capable and versatile piece of equipment. It is an excellent option for people who need power on the go, whether it’s in an off-grid camping setting, as an RV accessory, or even just a fun day at the park or beach.
Bluetti EB55 Details
The EB55 has 537 watt-hours (Wh) of storage capacity and can output 700W of continuous power (1,400W surge). That’s not enough power to start an air conditioner, but it is enough to run a full-sized refrigerator for a few hours during a power outage, or several smaller appliances for a full day, even without recharging.

Inside the box, the EB55 comes with an AC power supply, a cable for charging from a vehicle’s DC outlet, and a cable for charging from solar panels. The EB55 has 12 outlets:
- Four USB-A
- One USB-C
- Two grounded and two ungrounded 120V AC outputs
- Two 12V/10A DC
- One 12V DC cigarette lighter outlet
The unit is a compact 10.94 x 7.87 x 7.79 inches and weighs in at 16.5 lbs, with a foldable carrying handle on top. There is a built-in cooling fan with vents on the side of the unit, and a small backlit LCD screen on the front that displays the state of charge and input/output wattage using two shades of blue.
The Bluetti EB55 can charge from AC power with the included power brick, DC power from the solar panels, or both at the same time. It can also be charged using a 12V DC output from a vehicle or from a generator. Charging power is up to 200W from AC or solar, or 400W from both AC and solar at the same time.
In our tests, Bluetti’s 120W solar panel delivered its maximum power to the EB55 effortlessly under full sun on a warm day. The solar panel is about 2 feet high by 6 feet wide, with four sections that fold out from the stored position. On the back of these sections are thin “legs” that fold away from the main body and allow the user to adjust the angle at which the panel is placed relative to the ground, between 40° and 50°.

The whole solar panel is clad in ripstop-style polyester fabric, with a hard plastic handle at one end that is used for carrying the panel when it’s folded up. The solar sections themselves are laminated inside Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) sheets, which allows them to be flexible and resist fading and cracking due to high temperatures and UV radiation. A zippered pouch on the back of one section contains the cables and a list of specifications.

We’d recommend keeping the battery out of full sun because it heats up when charging.
Thankfully, the EB55 comes with a 5.5-foot solar charging cable with MC4 connectors, and the PV120 panel comes with its own 9.5-foot cable, making it easy to place the panel in the sun and the battery somewhere nearby in the shade. And because Bluetti uses standard solar connectors, additional cables can be purchased online from a variety of sources if you need more than 15 feet between the panel and the battery.
A word of caution: Bluetti solar panels are IP65 rated, meaning they can handle a little splash of water, but can’t withstand rain and snow. Only put them out on a dry day.
In testing the AC charging, we easily got the promised 200W from the charger, although it should be noted that the charging brick has its own internal cooling fan that can get a little noisy, so it’s best to charge it out of earshot. Either the AC adapter or the solar input is capable of filling the EB55’s 537 Wh of storage in about 3 hours from empty, and combining solar and AC together can increase the power to 400W, decreasing charging time down to just 1.8 hours.
In our tests, the EB55 was capable of powering many important appliances and devices, and we recommend it for medium-light duty applications like phone and laptop charging, camping, or even for short-duration events like small concerts in the park where no power is available.
We tested our EB55 in a few ways: powering a small outdoor pool pump, running live sound through a PA speaker, and running a full-size refrigerator. In all these tests, the EB55 performed very well.

With its 537 Wh of battery capacity, it could theoretically run the 33W pool pump for 16 hours, even without solar recharging. At medium volumes, the PA speaker and some guitar pedals used 25W. Imagine an afternoon pool party with a rock Band at a remote location run entirely by one Bluetti EB55 battery. All you’d need is transportation and a water source.
Closer to home, the refrigerator drew between 105W and 220W, depending on the cycle it was running, so it could be kept running for 3 hours or more during a power outage. If you add 4 hours of solar charging at an average of around 100W, you could extend that time to six hours or more. By plugging in the fridge only sporadically, you could theoretically keep food cold for days during a power outage using a single EB55 and solar panel, and probably have enough energy left over to keep your phone topped off.
Because of its LiFePO4 battery cell chemistry, the Bluetti should be able to fully charge and discharge 2,500 times, which could mean several years of power even with twice daily cycling. That many cycles should still leave the battery at 80% of its original capacity.
It’s a pretty remarkable little battery, and well worth its 499 MSRP. But the EB55 is one of the smallest capacity batteries Bluetti offers, and some of the company’s products can do much more than keep your food cold for a few hours.
Bluetti product comparison
Now let’s look at some of the key specifications of Bluetti’s product lineup. The company has offerings as small as the entry-level EB3A with a 268 Wh battery pack and as large as the expandable AC300 inverter module, which doesn’t come with its own battery but can instead be paired with up to four B300 expansion batteries for 12.3 kWh of storage. That’s nearly as large as a Tesla Powerwall.
The smaller, more portable power stations (basically anything that will fit in Bluetti’s carrying case) are fairly simple; just boxes with batteries, inputs, and output ports, while the larger offerings like the Bluetti AC200MAX and AC300 come with Bluetooth and can be controlled via the Bluetti smartphone app (the newer, small EB3A is also app-enabled). For very large battery backup needs, two AC300 inverter modules can be paired with Bluetti’s AC300 Fusion Box for a 240V system with up to 24.5 kWh of storage.

Like a lot of technology products you can find on Amazon, Bluetti products often go on sale, and people looking for the company’s products can often find coupons and discount codes online. For reference, here are the MSRPs of the most popular Bluetti products:

Bluetti battery warranties
The warranty is where portable batteries like Bluetti falter a bit compared to purpose-built home solar batteries. The warranty for most Bluetti products covers just 24 months of defects due to materials and workmanship. These products are designed to last for a long time, but the manufacturer doesn’t offer long-term coverage for most of its products.
That said, if you spring for the AC300 with one or more B300 expansion batteries, Bluetti offers 48 months of warranty coverage. Larger home battery backup systems like the EP500Pro come with 5-year warranties. These don’t quite match the 10-year warranties offered by companies like Generac and LG, so if you’re concerned about long-term coverage, one of those battery solutions might be better for you.
Ironically, Generac and LG use lithium NMC batteries, so the Bluetti should theoretically outlast them. Bluetti says its EB-series batteries will last for 2,500 cycles before being reduced to 80% of their original capacity, and its AC- and B-series batteries get estimates of 3,500 cycles before hitting 80%. Assuming one full cycle per day, that’s over 9 years.
How does Bluetti compare to the competition?
When it comes to the best solar generators, Bluetti is among the top contenders. Its LFP battery cells are rated to last five times as long as products from main competitors Jackery and GoalZero, and its products are every bit as durable and easy to use.
With 48-60 month warranties on its flagship products, Bluetti exceeds the standards set by its competitors, which almost all offer only 24 months of coverage. To be fair, their 500-cycle lifespans will almost certainly be up within those 24 months of regular usage, so Bluetti has a chance to extend its warranties and further set itself apart from Jackery, GoalZero, and others. We hope to see that as Bluetti products spend more time in the wild and prove their durability.
Which Bluetti product is right for you?
If you’re on the go and need to keep small appliances powered in an off-grid situation, the EB55 is an excellent choice. If you just want to keep your phone charged in the wilderness, the new EB3A is a great, inexpensive option.
For longer trips and cabin stays, the AC200P provides a robust amount of energy storage and power output that could keep an off-grid cabin very comfortable, especially when paired with a few Bluetti solar panels wired in series.
For home backup applications, we recommend the EP500 Pro over the AC300 with expansion batteries, simply because of the form factor and the 5-year warranty. If Bluetti ever increases its warranty protection for its modular batteries, we’ll update that recommendation accordingly.
Bottom line: are Bluetti products good?
Bluetti’s batteries and solar panels compare favorably with the majority of other portable solutions on the market. The LFP batteries and ETFE-clad solar panels are powerful and well-built products designed for a life lived outside of the boundaries of the electric grid. On top of that, Bluetti meets or exceeds industry standards for portable devices with 2-5 year warranties on its products.
One caveat here is that the company is still only a few years old, and it remains to be seen whether its batteries will match the estimated 2,500-cycle lifespans, and whether the company will prove adept at handling customer complaints if they don’t. But the tech is solid, the products are proving popular and well-liked, and Bluetti reps actively engage customers through multiple channels, including an owners’ group. The company seems to be doing things right.
Another caveat is that Bluetti’s solar panels aren’t as robust as actual home solar panels. For example, they aren’t designed to be outside in the rain and snow. If you’re looking for something to act as a fixture on your home or even off-grid cabin, real roof- or ground-mounted solar panels are much more robust, and can survive the weather for decades. And you can still use Bluetti battery backup with a well-designed solar installation.

Regardless of the caveats, Bluetti is making some great products. If you’re looking for a way to keep important devices powered up while in the wilderness, Bluetti batteries and solar panels have our recommendation.
Bluetti AC60 Power Station and B80 Expansion Battery

Bluetti AC60 Power Station
The AC60 is a mini power station that brings all the power of one of a larger size. As Bluetti’s most compact portable power supply to date, it weighs a very manageable 18.9 pounds and features a folding handle for added maneuverability. Bluetti also designed it to be water- and dust-resistant, carrying an IP65 rating.
This power station is equipped with a 600W inverter and is powered by a 403Wh LiFePO4 battery. The battery recharges in as little as 1.2 hours through a variety of charging methods, such as solar, AC, and 12V.
It features three operating modes: Silent (160W), Standard (225W), and Turbo (600W). In silent mode, it operates at 45dB, which is around the volume of a quiet conversation.
Bluetti B80 Expansion Battery
Bluetti also announced the release of the B80 Expansion Battery. Like the AC60, it features an IP65 rating for water and dust resistance and a NEMA 4X enclosure. That NEMA 4X rating means the chassis is rated by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association to include a gasket that protects against liquid and solid ingress. That makes the AC60 and B80 suitable for rugged outdoor use.
Not only does it serve as a power bank for the AC60, but it’s also compatible with other Bluetti solar generators. Plus, it functions as a standalone DC power source with three ports: USB-A, USB-C, and 12-volt. With 806Wh of energy output, it can charge a smartphone up to 43 times in a single charge.
You can recharge the B80 on its own or when hooked up to the AC60. It also supports AC adapters and 200W solar charging using a standard PV cable.
Price and Availability
You can buy the Bluetti products at either the BLUETTI website or on Amazon. The early bird price on the AC60B80 combo is 1198 while the regular price is 1398. You can also purchase just the AC60 or B80 on its own for 699 (Early bird pricing is 599). Early bird pricing ends on May 31, 2023.

The next generation of energy storage: Sodium-ion
We’re all familiar with the Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) batteries which power our Apple devices. These are ubiquitous for portable gadgets as they pack a lot of power into a small space, and support fast charging.
Li-ion batteries do, however, have some big drawbacks when it comes to scaling them up to the size and capacity needed to power a home. The rarity of the materials used in their construction means that they are both expensive and have a significant environmental cost, and their limited life can make them less than ideal when you’re investing the kind of cash needed for a home power station.
The next generation technology emerging to solve this problem is Sodium-ion (Na-ion) batteries, and it’s this tech which BLUETTI is pioneering in the world’s first sodium-ion solar generator. The generator is the NA300, and the matching battery-pack the B480.
This gets you four 20A plugs and one 30A L14-30 output port, all driven by the built-in 3,000W pure sine wave inverter. This is beefy enough to power most home appliances.

Review: Bluetti EB3A 600W Portable Power Station
It’s the best time to get a power station because, at this point, a variety of power stations offer different capacities, wattage output, ports, sizes, and, most importantly, a wide range of prices. Just a few years ago, the number of brands selling power stations was slim, and that caused there to be some somewhat overpriced products that consumers were forced to choose from. As a consumer, you have much more freedom to choose what power station fits your budget and your powering needs because of increased competition between brands.
In this review, we’re looking at this Bluetti EB3A 600W portable power station. This product is the exact outcome of the competition that gives a better choice because this EB3A power station has a low price while still delivering incredible powering capabilities.
This Bluetti EB3A has a 268Wh power capacity in terms of being a power station; that’s a pretty low capacity. The max output of 600W comes as even more of a surprise, but usually, the output would be lower in this case, but it’s higher than what most similar capacity power stations offer. When it comes to charging devices such as laptops, tablets, or phones, you can still expect many full charges, much more than a regular power bank but less so than power stations with higher capacities.
Most phones can charge to full power about 25 times, while laptops and tablets with similar battery sizes can be recharged 5-6 times with this Bluetti power station. So you’re still looking at days of reliability with the Bluetti EB3A when solely charging from it.
On the capacity side, when it comes to powering appliances, it’s more about the wattage of the appliances you’re powering. With the EB3A power station having a 268Wh power capacity, you can power a 268W device for 1 hour or a 1W appliance for 268 hours. This is why the 600W output paired with a 268Wh capacity is surprising, as most power stations have both specs in the same range. This isn’t a bad thing, though, this is meant to be a capable and budget power station, but you should know that powering an appliance that requires more than 268W will get you about an hour or less of usage time.
One example would be the electric duster that we powered from the EB3A; it used about 500W of power, and the runtime was 30 minutes, so it fits pretty well into the duration you can expect from higher-wattage appliances.
The port selection of the Bluetti EB3A power station is varied, plentiful, and on par with what you can expect from its capacity and output. The unit has one DC cigarette lighter port, two DC 5521 ports, two USB-A ports, one USB-C port, and two AC outlets. Also, it’s not a port, but you also get wireless charging at the top.
Charging ports are pretty good, with two USB-A ports sharing a 15W output, and the USB-C port has a 100W Power Delivery output. So there’s no Quick Charge USB-A port, but the 100W PD port makes up for it because you can charge most USB-C laptops at their max speed. The wireless charging pad at the top has a 15W max output.
The USB-C port can also be used to charge most phones at this point fast, and this is true for Android phones and even iPhones. With iPhones, you’ll have to use a USB-C to Lightning cable, but the fast charging option is still there for most phones.
For a budget power station like this, we thought Bluetti would have settled for a 60W PD port, but a 100W port is surprising and exceeds expectations. In our test were able to charge a Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 at its max speed via the USB-C PD port, simultaneously charge a Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy A51 from the two USB-A ports, and fast wirelessly charge an LG G7 from the 15W wireless charging pad at the top of the power station.
The DC cigarette lighter port will likely be more beneficial than the two DC 5521 ports because few appliances are powered via 5521 ports. However, you may charge DC chargeable laptops via the 5521 ports.
In our test, we could power the tire inflator pump from the DC cigarette lighter port, which took about 110W to power and could function optimally. If you have other devices that can be powered from a DC cigarette lighter port, we recommend getting a DC cigarette lighter to DC 5521 connector that you can use with the 5521 ports on the power station; this will expand their reliability, just as we did in our test.
As we mentioned, the EB3A power station has two AC outlets and a 600W max output. Powering appliances above 270W will make the power station last about an hour or less. This still doesn’t take away just how incredible it is to power appliances up to the 600W range on such an affordable power station.
The appliance we tested was the eclectic duster which pulled about 500W, was pretty close to the power station’s max output, and ran flawlessly. We then moved on to powering an Acekool stand mixer, cranking it up to its highest setting, and it was using 230W; while running the stand mixer, we plugged in a Lasko tower fan, and the overall output went to 260W.
We also powered a crock pot alone, placed it on high, and that was able to use up to 250W.
Moving onto charging devices and powering appliances at the same time, we had a Note 9 and Galaxy A51 charging from the USB-A ports, the Lenovo laptop charging from the USB-C port, and the LG G7 wireless charging, all the while we also powered a 32 inch Samsung TV and a tower fan from the two AC outlets.
All these devices being powered simultaneously came to a 150W output, which shows that this power station is still great at doing multiple things at once and lets you use it for a couple of hours.
One of the most surprising parts of the Bluetti EB3A power station is that you can power appliances that go over 600W power usage. This is done by activating Power Lifting Mode on the Bluetti app, which allows the power station to decrease voltage, increase amperage, and makes the appliances you have plugged in “think” it’s receiving enough power to function.
We did this with a Ninja professional food processor that uses 850W of power, but when we plugged it in, we set the food processor to high, and it only used 210W. Yet, even at a 210W power usage, the food processor was still performing decently, not optimally, but if you were at the park having a cookout and needed to slice up some veggies, you could still do that with this EB3A power station.

The Bluetti EB3A power station is recharged through the AC or DC recharge port. The box includes the AC recharging cable that can be used to recharge the power station at 250W. You can increase the recharge rate via the Bluetti app and activate Turbo recharging, which can recharge the power station at 350W. That said, as convenient as recharging the power station at 350W is, we recommend not doing it too often as it can wear down the batteries faster and should be used in emergencies. A Silent mode also recharges the power station at 100W, and the fan doesn’t turn on in this mode.
So the lack of a car charging cable or a solar cable doesn’t come as a surprise, as that would have added cost to the power station, so the inclusion of solely the AC cable does have a connection to the lower price of the EB3A.
We were able to test out solar recharging via a Fanttik 100W solar panel, and the EB3A power station was able to recharge at about 88W. So that you know, you’re not locked into using only Bluetti solar panels. The max recharge rate of the EB3A is 200W.
One excellent feature rarely seen with a power station is that this EB3A can act as an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), so you can connect the AC charger to a surge protector where other devices are powered. The power station will continue running your devices if the main power goes out. Of course, you must ensure that the devices connected to the surge protector are within the 600W range, but it’s a rare feature but very useful.
Size and Weight:
This is a relatively small and lightweight power station. Remember, the higher the power capacity and output scale, the larger and heavier the power station will be. This EB3A has a length of 10 inches, a width of 7 inches, and a height of 7 inches. The weight of the power station is 10 pounds.
You can carry the unit with a single handle and move it around quickly. A much better portable experience than one of those mega-power stations that require you to brace yourself every time you have to fit them. Portability is made more accessible with a large foldable handle at the top.
The power station is easy to use, with nearly all the functional parts at the front, except the wireless charging pad and the handle that can be found at the top.
At the front is where you’ll find all the charging ports, this includes all the output and input ports. The AC section includes two AC outlets, and the DC section consists of the DC and USB charging ports. There is also an LED flashlight in the top right corner.
The LED flashlight, AC, and DC sections have power buttons; press the power button for each section, and it turns on, and the green light on each power button turns on.
The screen is an upgrade compared to some other Bluetti power stations because this one shows you the remaining usage time of the power station and the recharge time. Of course, you also get info such as wattage output/input, battery capacity remaining, and what sections of the power station are currently activated. The cherry on top is that the screen is bright and is easier to see than some other screens on the market that are not nearly as bright.
We did have a hard time capturing the screen on camera in sunlight due to glare, but it’s easy to see otherwise.
Structure and Material:
The build quality of the power station is good, with a solid structure. The entire housing is made of plastic, with rubber pads at the bottom. So it’s not a rugged build, but it can take constant usage; remember not to expose it to water or drop it from a high height. This is not a rugged power station, so you still have to be careful not to damage it.
Under high loads, the power station does get warm, but an internal fan does a decent job of keeping the unit cool. Heat is generated with all power stations, and as long as the power station has a way to keep itself cool, then you’re good.
As mentioned, the power station can power appliances above the 600W max output with Power Lifting Mode. It increases amperage to make the appliances you’re powering think it’s receiving enough power. However, if you power appliances far above the max output, the EB3A will automatically turn off.
There is a Power Lifting Mode that you can activate via the app that makes the max output 1200W, which allows you to power a wider range of appliances.
This is a capable but still limited power station; at the same time, it’s a very affordable one, too. The 268Wh power capacity doesn’t have a long usage time if you’re powering an appliance within the 300W range. However, the 600W max output and the power station’s ability to run devices over its max output is a great feature that will let you power higher-wattage appliances, albeit temporarily.
Port selection is not lacking, with the EB3A featuring what most other power stations feature. Still, the included accessories lack only an AC charging cable, but once again, this is to cut costs.
The power capacity is still enough to charge phones, tablets, and laptops to full power multiple times. The 268Wh power capacity isn’t doing any favors for runtime when powering appliances in the 250W range. Still, the ability to power devices up to 600W and beyond in some cases at this price range can be a good deal if it fits your needs.
The power station can easily be moved around, and the large handle at the top makes it more accessible. The EB3A is easy to use, with nearly everything being the front.
The power station has a solid build but is not waterproof or shockproof, so don’t treat it like a rugged build. An internal fan keeps the unit cool and shuts off automatically if you try to power an appliance well over its max output.
