The Fanttik Evo 300 is less of a battery pack and more of a lunch box-sized emergency power station. You get plenty of ports and surge output up to 600W, which powers more substantial things through the AC outlet and car socket for a day or two.

It’s the most affordable entry on this list, and yet it also hosts one of the highest charging speeds and will still fit easily in your backpack or suitcase (so long as you aren’t getting on a plane). Yes, it only has two ports, but unless you consistently need to charge 3-4 devices at once, why pay for ports you on’t need?

How to choose the best high-capacity battery pack

While battery packs are seemingly simple gadgets, there are quite a few different things you should consider before buying one.

Sure, you could go out and buy the biggest one you see, but if you take the time to understand the little differences between everything, you’ll end up with a battery pack that truly fits your needs and works the best for your specific workflow/lifestyle. Once you have determined what you’ll be using the mobile power solution for, you can decide if a high-capacity power bank is for you or if you should go with one of the best portable power stations.

How much battery capacity do you actually need?

Perhaps the most important thing to consider before buying a battery pack is its capacity — in other words, how big of a battery it’s packing.

Since we’re dealing with high-capacity packs, we’re only looking at 20,000mAh or higher options. As such, any of the picks on this list will be able to charge your smartphone multiple times and still have some leftover fuel in the tank.

For comparison’s sake, most smartphones today have batteries that vary in capacity from around 3,500 and 4,500mAh. If you’re planning on using your battery pack to charge your phone, tablet, or headphones, something with a capacity of around 10,000-15,000mAh should be enough so long as you’re getting home to an outlet by the end of the day. If this sounds like a better fit for you, you might want to consider a more compact power bank.

So, why do power banks with capacities of 30,000mAh and more exist? There are a couple of good reasons:

Why USB-C is so important

We’ve talked a lot about USB-C Power Delivery throughout this article, but let’s take a step back for a second and explain why it’s so important and why you should get a USB-C battery pack.

USB-C is essentially the better-in-every-way evolution from those Micro-USB ports that used to be prevalent on just about every Android phone for charging. Not only does USB-C benefit from the fact that it’s reversible (meaning there’s no wrong way to insert it), but it’s also considerably more powerful: Power Delivery can be used to charge at speeds up to 100W or beyond, such as the 140W speeds on our overall pick, the Anker 737 Power Bank.

Here’s the thing, though — not all USB-C ports are created equally. Most USB-C ports come with the Power Delivery standard (often referred to as PD), which signifies that a USB-C port offers considerably faster charging and data speeds. So if a USB-C port only offers 15W, that’s a USB-C port that is not USB-C, and you should skip it.

As such, when you’re looking to charge a device that has an extraordinarily big battery, not just USB-C but also Power Delivery is a must. Not only are a lot of newer devices moving to Power Delivery ports, but it’ll also cut down quite a bit on recharge times.

The MaxOak K2 is named after the world’s second highest mountain, and it’s a fitting moniker that manufacturer KayoMaxtar chose. After all, at 50,000mAh, this is one of the biggest portable laptop battery chargers available, with a literally mountainous capacity.

Just to put that in perspective, the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus has a 3,500mAh battery, meaning that the MaxOak K2 could potentially charge it more than 14 times over with some juice spare. And the popular Dell XPS 13 laptop could get a whole day’s worth of charge out of this accessory.

As expected, the K2 is built like a brick, measuring 207 x 136 x 33mm, and at nearly 1.28kg, isn’t far off the weight of a brick – it’s certainly heavier than most new ultraportable laptops (like the Toshiba X20W-D).

KayoMaxtar opted for a metal finish which gives a nice premium feel to the device, but it’s slippery on some surfaces, so gets some self-adhesive plastic feet. All connectors, status lights and the power button are located on one side.

There’s one power-in socket, four white LED lights that give a rough idea of how much juice the battery currently holds, an oversized power button, a 12V@2.5A output, another 20V@3A output, and four full-size USB ports (two at 2.1A and two at 1A).

The latter are arranged in two columns (two per column) and it would have probably been better to have them aligned in the same direction (which would have allowed the engineers to pack in more of them).

So sadly, there’s no USB Type-C connector or any sort of fast charging trickery (e.g Qualcomm Quick Charge) that rivals like the Aukey PB-T11 offer; some smartphones – especially the high-end models – have moved to 9V. However, this accessory does automatically power up when connected with a compatible device.

A word of warning: the 12V and 20V connectors are located near to each other so make sure you double-check before plugging in or you might fry your device. The LED status lights only give a very approximate idea (plus or minus 20%) of the level of charge remaining, so you’re never sure if the battery is completely full (four LEDs) or just about to die (one LED).

Given the size of the device, the K2 can only be charged using a proprietary/dedicated power supply unit rated at 16.8V, 2.5A (42W); there’s no option for charging via a microUSB or USB Type-C port. KayoMaxtar claims that it takes up to eight hours to charge the battery.

Along with the battery itself, you get a protective pouch with a set of laptop adaptors (14 in all), a microUSB cable, and a power cord. The connectors, the manufacturer says, should cover 90% of all laptops on the market, although if you hadn’t noticed, you won’t be able to charge an Apple device or hardware that uses a USB Type-C connector out of the box.

The list of supported laptops includes Sony, Fujitsu, Acer, IBM, Dell, HP, Asus, Compaq, NEC, Toshiba, Lenovo and Samsung.

One of the features that explains the bulky nature of the K2 is the built-in overcurrent and low-current protection that should, in theory, automatically shut down the device should there be an issue with the product.

Note that you may not be able to take this battery on a plane because the massive capacity means it’s banned on most if not all flights. At 185Wh, it is above the 160Wh limitation placed on batteries by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) over in the US.

Another limitation is that you won’t be able to power laptops that require more than 60W of load power. That includes mobile workstations or gaming notebooks, but also standard laptops with large displays (think 17-inch models). You can still charge these when they’re turned off, but not when switched on – which is more of a safety net than an intrinsic flaw.

Early verdict

A word about the price first: at the time of writing, this device is only available in the UK from Amazon for a whopping £136, with the item being shipped from China. Cheap this most certainly isn’t.

Whether this portable laptop battery is worth buying will depend on your exact use-case. For business jetsetters, devices like the K2 can be a real boon, but its capacity might be problematic depending on where you are travelling (due to airline restrictions on batteries of this size).

There’s also the fact that it is not officially compatible with Apple devices (and won’t charge Dell XPS 13 touchscreen laptops) and is quite bulky by itself – which means that you will be better off leaving it in your checked-in luggage.

We would have loved an integrated cable, a more precise means of displaying the amount of power left (maybe an LCD), a USB Type-C charging option (both in and out), a quick charging feature and perhaps an emergency light as well.

In the end, this is not a battery charger for those looking to power only smartphones or tablets – there are better models (like the Aukey PB-T11) that can fulfil this role.

Our Verdict

The Maxoak Laptop Power Bank is the highest-capacity battery we’ve ever tested, and ideal if your power needs are great (and land-based – this is too powerful to take on a plane). With 11 adaptors in the box chances are the Maxoak can charge your laptop along with all your other electronic devices, and still have juice to spare. But while it’s a highly functional power bank with premium looks, there’s really nothing here to justify the expensive price tag. We’d like to see an LCD screen and an AC power outlet for that money, while USB-C and Quick Charge support would not be made to feel unwelcome.

Maxoak’s Laptop Power Bank costs a not insignificant £115.99 from Amazon UK. The device ships from China, which means you’ll be waiting a few weeks for it to arrive, but delivery to the UK is free. Also see: Best power banks 2018.

This is the largest power bank to ever grace the doors of the PC Advisor Test Centre. At a huge 50,000mAh this 1.26kg power bank is about as heavy as the laptop you’ll want to charge with it.

Yep, that’s right: power banks are no longer just for phones, tablets and other USB-connected devices. This Maxoak comes with 11 adaptor tips for plugging in most laptops (various models from Fujitsu, Sony, Acer, Asus, IBM, Dell, HP, NEC, Samsung and Lenovo are listed – check for yours here), though unfortunately there’s no way to charge a laptop that has a different adaptor.

Some of those laptops excluded from the power party are Apple MacBooks and laptops with power adaptors higher than 90W, plus there’s also no native support for USB-C devices. Four full-size USB outputs might enable you to get around the latter problem (though with two rated at only 1A we’d have been equally happy with just the pair of 2.1A outputs). We appreciate the bundled protective case with zipped side pouch that can be used to prevent the tips getting mislaid, but can’t help feeling an AC power outlet might have been a better approach for covering all laptop bases.

We’ve seen AC power outlets before in, for example, the Omnicharge and RavPower PowerStation Series, though none of these devices has the enormous capacity of the Maxoak Laptop Power Bank.

That really is its key selling point. With 50,000mAh power to hand, you could conceivably keep your laptop powered up for several days.

Your initial reaction to that figure is probably wow, that’s a lot of power. You might well be thinking you could charge your Galaxy S8 almost 17 times, or your iPhone 25 times.

But that’s assuming the device’s entire capacity is available for charging connected devices, which as we know is never the case. Also see: How to improve smartphone battery life.

The industry-standard energy efficiency for power banks sits somewhere between 60- and 70- percent, with some high-end devices with premium batteries able to manage 80- or 90 percent. The Maxoak sits at the lower end of this spectrum, with an efficiency around 60 percent.

This means you’ll get about 30,000mAh for powering your devices, which translates to around 10 full charges for your Galaxy S8 or around 15 for your iPhone, depending on which model you own.

Suddenly this hulking great power bank with its 207x136x33mm case is starting to look on the large side in return for what you get: be under no pretences that this is the type of device you will want to throw in your handbag or rucksack and take out and about with you on your travels.

That said, the Maxoak’s effective capacity mirrors the advertised capacity of the previously highest-capacity power bank we’ve tested. So if you do need a lot of power, this is the way to get it.

But it is not the way to get that power outside the UK, at least not if you’re intending to get there on a plane. Current guidelines allow a maximum 100Wh batteries to be taken onboard flights, which in most cases works out at around 27,000mAh. With its 50,000mAh capacity this power bank has a huge 185Wh rating and is significantly over the allowance. It is not allowed in your hold luggage or your hand luggage. Assuming you’re intending to stay with your feet firmly on the ground, the Maxoak has several attractive features, including passthrough charging (which enables you to charge its battery as it charges your devices) and auto-on – all you need do is plug in a device and charging will begin.

There is a slew of outputs, including 20V/3A and 12V/2.5A outputs for laptops and digital cameras (be careful not to use the wrong one or you could damage your device), and four USB outputs. There’s no Quick Charge support, but two of these USB outputs are reasonably speedy at 2.1A (10.5W). This means that rather than charging one device many times over, you could charge several devices multiple times, keeping them going for a good while away from the mains. Also see: Best MiFi 2017.

Something we might usually find on a power bank is a Micro-USB or USB-C input, which allows you to recharge the bank from your phone- or tablet charger. While it would have been nice to see one here for quick, partial top-ups, the reality is it would take forever for a device of this capacity to charge over USB. Instead you get a wall plug that can take it to 100 percent in between six and eight hours.

All these connections are found on one end of the device, alongside a rather large power button. Tapping this with no devices connected will activate the four LEDs to let you know how much power remains.

This system is common in power banks, but it’s a major flaw in high-capacity banks such as this: with each LED representing a quarter of that 50,000mAh of power, you’re going to get a very rough reading of how much power is left. With only one LED lit the bank could still contain more power than a fully charged mid-capacity power bank, for example.

LEDs aside, the Maxoak has a nice design, with a gunmetal grey tough outer case and gloss black stripes down either side. The ABS plastic end caps don’t detract from the classy look, and this is a device that would easily fit into any business environment.
