Who Makes Kirkland Batteries? (Surprise! Surprise!)
Kirkland is the signature Costco brand of products sold at Costco warehouse clubs. But, obviously, Costco doesn’t make these products. So, who makes Kirkland batteries? You wouldn’t expect the industry’s leading company to make Kirkland batteries, but they are.
The company that makes Kirkland batteries is Duracell Battery.
What brand are Kirkland batteries?
There is quite an extensive line of products that carry the Kirkland brand name, including Kirkland batteries, which most people simply call Costco batteries. Kirkland is Costco’s signature brand and entails an extensive product line of nearly everything imaginable. Essentially, Kirkland is Costco’s generic option for high-priced items.
You can find a Kirkland branded product for any item sold at Costco. Costco negotiates a branding agreement with other companies, and those companies make the product, but it bears the Kirkland label. Typically, the company that makes Kirkland is also making their own branded products for Costco.
And for years, the internet was dripping with the question; which makes Kirkland batteries? With numerous rumor mills at work, they were all put to rest in 2016. During an Atlanta-based TV station interview, Costco CEO Craig Jelinek revealed the incredible secret behind Kirkland batteries.
What company makes Kirkland batteries?
Among the many big-name brands behind the Kirkland line of products, the company name that makes most Kirkland batteries stole the show. That’s right! Most Kirkland batteries are Duracell batteries.
The line of Costco Kirkland batteries is pervasive, and Duracell makes most of their alkaline batteries, such as the Kirkland aa batteries, aaa batteries, and even Kirkland hearing aid batteries.
But what about the once prevalent Kirkland automotive batteries? Though Duracell makes automotive batteries, they only made Costco’s alkaline batteries, not the car battery.
Who makes Kirkland car batteries?
Duracell batteries are commonly known as one of the best battery brands for all and any battery type needed to power home electronics and other such items.
While most of Costco’s batteries are made by Duracell, they did not make one of Costco’s most popular batteries, the automotive battery. The answer to that question was another industry leader; Johnson Controls.
Johnson Controls was the original company that made Kirkland automotive batteries. At the time, virtually all car batteries in the United States were made by Johnson Controls. Johnson Controls was the most prominent automotive battery maker in the world.
So, ironically, most of the batteries sold anywhere and under any name were most likely made by Johnson Controls. However, in 2018, the company’s battery division was sold to Brookfield Business Partners, who then incorporated it into their battery division, Clarios LLC.
Clarios LLC is world-renowned in their own right for making quality batteries as they also make brands such as Optima batteries and the DieHard automotive battery. From 2019 and up to late 2021, when Costco and Clarios LLC discontinued the Kirkland car battery, Clarios LLC was the company making and behind Kirkland car batteries.
Where are they made?
Though the Kirkland automotive battery is no longer in production, and Costco has an international presence, it could have been made at Clarios manufacturing plants. Though most, if not all, were likely made at one of their three plants based around the United States.
Clarios LLC operates and houses its automotive battery manufacturing process worldwide in these countries and cities.
Currently, Clarios LLC makes car batteries in :
- 17 US factories; including:
- North Carolina
Kirkland car battery review
In its heyday, the Kirkland car battery was trendy and received an impressive amount of positive reviews that it was a perfect battery.
As far as how much Kirkland automotive batteries used to cost, that depended on the specific battery you were buying. Regardless though, every battery model was priced well under the competition.
The average cost of Kirkland automotive batteries was approximately 77.00.
Even by today’s standards, that was an excellent price. Then, when you consider Costco’s warranty and the fact that the batteries typically had a life of nearly six years, it is easy to see why they were so popular.
These batteries were considered one of the best batteries on the market, not only for price and support but also for performance. They were built with first-rate specifications.
Both Johnson Controls and Clarios LLC combined top-notched technology with superior components to create high-quality batteries. It was consistently reported that these batteries outperformed most others on the market.
When Costco sold Kirkland automotive batteries, all the Costco car batteries came with at least a limited 36-month replacement warranty. However, the Kirkland car battery came with a warranty of 3 years with complete replacement and a 100-month prorated limited warranty.
A Kirkland car battery generally lasts a minimum of 4 years and eight months, but many reviews state the batteries have lasted a full six years.
Costco provides incredible customer support for every product they sell, not only their car batteries. The warranty on these batteries provided a free replacement if necessary. But even if you no longer had the receipt for the original purchase, it was not a problem.
You could still get a new battery as a replacement via the warranty by simply taking the old battery back to the store. There were no questions asked about the missing receipt.
In addition to the no questions asked replacement policy, if you wanted to return the old battery for a new replacement, you simply had to bring the old one into the store and tell them you wanted a new one.
The workers at the front counter simply took the old batteries and provided you with what you wanted. They did not even check the old batteries to see if they were no longer any good. Among the excellent quality that the Kirkland product line provides, the Costco customer service is second to none.
Are Kirkland car batteries any good?
Kirkland batteries constantly received positive reviews by customers up to being discontinued in 2021 by Costco and Clarios LLC. These batteries were called one of the best on the market and possibly the best value and quality in the automotive battery sector.
In fact, due to the transition from Johnson Controls to Clarios LLC, Costco had to discontinue the battery because its price point, warranty, performance, and lifespan made the battery unsustainable for their bottom line.
Where to buy Kirkland car batteries?
As previously explained, Kirkland is the product line and brand name for Costco’s own products. Most of the products that Kirkland offered were a cheaper option than higher price tagged items without having to lose quality for a better price. With that said, all Kirkland products are only available at Costco.
Unfortunately, you cannot buy Kirkland automotive batteries any longer as they have been discontinued and have now been replaced with Costco Interstate Batteries.

What to Keep in Mind When Buying Batteries
When buying batteries at an online battery store, you should always know how to pick the right option for each application. Here we will go over some important aspects to consider when buying batteries.
Batteries should always fit the slot or space design for them to be installed. While some options like AA, AAA, and other all-purpose batteries have standard sizes, batteries for laptops, cellphones, cameras, and even drones tend to change concerning each brand and product.
When choosing an AGM battery, gel battery, or any other deep-cycle battery for RVs, boats, or similar applications, you will find that dimensions slightly change concerning the battery capacity and other specifications. For deep-cycle batteries, it is very important to match the capacity of the battery bank to the required energy demand of the application.
The warranty is another important aspect to consider when getting new batteries. This defines the conditions and period that battery manufacturers are liable for their product, with warranties changing between manufacturers and battery types. For instance, a wet cell battery might have a lower warranty than a gel golf cart battery, an AGM trolling motor battery, or even the best marine battery available.
Compatibility is everything. A battery should always be paired with a device considering voltage, shape, dimensions, and capacity. This is important when choosing batteries for laptops, cellphones, as it is when choosing a boat, motorcycle, car, or RV battery.
It is not the same to pick batteries for cars, boats, or motorcycles as it is to pick them for common electronics. You should always consider the intended usage when picking a battery at an online battery store. To do this, compare its capacity, voltage, size, and other specifications to the desired application or to the existing battery of your device.
While it is important to find the cheapest place to buy batteries, it is also imperative to never cheap out with off-brand batteries, since these have low quality, reduced warranties, and usually poor performance. Always stick to quality brand batteries or batteries manufactured by large stores like Amazon batteries, Walmart batteries, or even Sam’s Club automotive batteries.
Every battery has an alphanumeric model that identifies it. This ensures compatibility for certain applications and will allow you to look up the specifications for the battery. Considering the model is especially important for device-specific batteries that are designed for a certain variety of electronics like laptops or cellphones.

Costco Duracell Rechargeable Kit Review
Recently I purchased the Duracell Rechargeable Kit from Costco. I’m all about saving money, but even more important is finding overall value. Therefore, I’ll compare rechargeable batteries to conventional batteries at Costco. (My review on Duracell is unpaid.)
First, a word from this post’s sponsor:
I’ve partnered with @Downy to share that Infusions CALM scent booster fabric softener is now available at Costco across Canada for a LIMITED TIME. Pick up your bottle now(3.4 L each) for just 15.99.
Downy Infusions CALM freshens and softens clothes while the relaxing scent of lavender and vanilla bean instantly transports you to moments of cozy, calm, tranquility!
Duracell Triple AAA Pack of 48 for 27.99 = 58 cents/battery Duracell Double AA Pack of 48 for 27.99 = 58 cents/battery
Better for the environment
Duracell says on the packaging that these batteries can be charged up to 1000 cycles. Therefore, rechargeable batteries will have a very long life span. In addition, it’s also nice to have less waste.
Less is more
Conventional batteries at Costco come in packages of 48 per battery size. To buy a pack each of AA and AAA, I’d have to buy a total of 96 batteries! Most batteries will just sit in storage and eventually lose some of their charge.
Convenience and the Fully Charged Indicator
Rechargeable batteries take only an hour to charge and the charger indicates batteries are ready with a green light. Side benefit: No more mixing up old, dead batteries with new ones.
In conclusion, I believe the Costco Duracell Rechargeable Kit is the best value for most people. Feel free to explore my other Costco Reviews by clicking here. You can also join my Costco Money Saving Tips and Reviews page here. Have an awesome rest of your week!
Kirkland Battery vs Duracell: Which Is Better?
During the projection period of 2022–2027, the global battery market is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 15.8%, surpassing USD 99.05 billion in 2020 to reach around USD 250.16 billion by 2027.
On the global market, a 4.8% growth rate is anticipated. One of the strongest brands in this sector are companies like Duracell and Kirkland. They have managed to carve out a niche in the market while lacking the reputation of other big-name brands such as Energizer or Duracell.
But if you go to the store and choose to buy one of the two brands, which is better? We will provide you with all the information you require in this post so that you can carefully consider your options and choose wisely.
Duracell’s history dates back to 1920 when the scientist Samuel Rubens and the manufacturer of tungsten filaments Philip Mallory met. Thanks to some experiments that Rubens was doing at that time, he needed some equipment and parts that Mallory had.
These two great visionaries teamed up and revolutionized the world with various inventions. One of them was mercury batteries. The batteries later replaced zinc-carbon batteries in World War II. which were common at the time.
In the 1950s, Alkaline Manganese batteries improved and quickly became the market leader in batteries.
They offer a wide variety of alkaline batteries with M3 technology. They also sell lithium, silver oxide, and zinc-air batteries. The company has ten battery factories worldwide and is headquartered in Connecticut, United States.
Unlike Duracell, Kirkland Signature batteries did not start out as a pure battery business. Kirkland Signature is the own brand of Costco, a company founded in 1976 by brothers Sol and Robert Price. They started the business by raising two million dollars from family and friends.
The business model is that of a private shopping club. That means that you pay an annual fee and throughout the year you receive various benefits and great discounts on all kinds of products.
One of the many products that Costco sells under the Kirkland Signature brand is its alkaline batteries, which are of great quality and much cheaper than most of its competitors.
Kirkland Signature batteries are manufactured by Duracell, according to statements of Costco’s CEO, Craig Jelinek. This is not unusual since many of Costco’s products are manufactured by third parties, and on many occasions, by renowned and prestigious brands with which they compete in the market.
But if Kirkland’s batteries are made by Duracell, does it mean that they are the same? The answer is NO and that is why we will explain below what are the substantial differences between these two brands that are leaders in the US market.
Duracell Batteries vs. Kirkland Batteries
This is a battle that is fought inch by inch and it is not easy to decide on a specific brand, since the two batteries come from the same manufacturer.
Kirkland batteries, for example, are preferred by 80% of consumers, which is surprising for a store brand. While Duracell Quantum AA has a higher market share of 89%.
The batteries represented by the pink rabbit are known worldwide for their quality and durability, while the success of the giant Costco always offers a better price and many people prefer them when comparing the cost-benefit of the battery.
However, there are small differences that can help each person decide on one or another brand. The final decision will depend on what you consider most important when buying a product and what you want to cover with it.
Differences Between Duracell and Kirkland Batteries
Although Duracell manufactures Kirkland AA and AAA batteries and both brands offer high-quality batteries, that is not to say that there are no differences between them in their structure, models, and prices.
Price is always a determining factor when deciding on any purchase. At this point, the Costco store brand batteries are considerably cheaper than the Duracell batteries.
You can get a pack of 48 Kirkland alkaline AA1.5 batteries for the price of 14. While for the same price you will get only 40 Duracell batteries. However, you should keep in mind that Duracell batteries have a longer duration and lifetime.
Duracell batteries are at the forefront of technology, they have a high-density core and Duralock with long shelf life, which is mainly responsible for no leaks, unlike Kirkland batteries, which do not have this technology and tend to last less.
Duracell’s high-density core provides more power. So if we combine more energy with fewer leaks, we obtain a high-quality battery, an appreciated characteristic in AA batteries and recognized worldwide by all buyers.
Variety and Usability
Duracell batteries win hands down at this point, as they come in a variety of models and sizes. They are also highly recommended for any type of electrical artifact. They are the best option for cameras, flashlights, toys, remote control, and all kinds of high-drain devices.
Duracell Warranty vs. Kirkland Warranty
Duracell offers its customers a warranty of 2 to 5 years if the batteries have a defect in workmanship or the material with which they were made has been defective.
It is good to know that this guarantee may vary according to the product you have purchased. Also, in order to guarantee the return of your money or the exchange of the product, it is necessary to have the receipt or proof of payment for the item.
The guarantee that Duracell offers do not cover damages that may have been caused by misuse of its products or any type of negligence on the part of the customer.
Kirkland offers Costco’s blanket warranty on all of its products. The requirements to claim the guarantee are similar to those of Duracell, however, there is a vital difference between the two companies.
Kirkland does not have the same transparency or offer detailed information regarding what its warranty covers. This makes Duracell a much more reliable option when it comes to claiming a product in poor condition or managing the procedures for your money back.
What are the best products of each brand?
It is difficult to determine which brand to choose since, as we said before, the final decision of each purchase is subjective depending on what one considers most valuable. However, we want to present you with some of the most successful models of each brand that cover certain specific needs and for which have become known in the market.
Duracell Ultra Power batteries are a great option over expensive lithium batteries. They provide 1.27V and are perfect for all types of 500-lumen LED lights and flashlights. If you want batteries that don’t require that much amount of power, you can also go for Duracell Coppertop, with magnetic charge and perfect for magnetic hanging lights.
Duracell Plus AA batteries are the flagship product of this company. The company points out that its batteries last 50% longer than any battery on the market. Although they are the cheapest in its entire line, they still have Duralock technology, which guarantees a long battery life.
Kirkland Signature 1.5V AA Standard Batteries and AAA Alkaline Batteries are the best and most popular products among Costco shoppers. Because for a relatively cheap price, you get quality batteries with 7-year shelf life and no added mercury.
We could determine that Duracell Batteries are the best option if what you need is a high-performance battery that works with all kinds of electronic devices that consume large amounts of energy. You should also keep in mind that you can find many models of this brand that fit all kinds of needs.
Duracell is a leader in the global battery market and year after year it releases new models that meet specific customer needs.
But if what you need is a standard AA battery for any electronic device that does not require great power, then Kirkland batteries are definitely your best option.
Their are the most competitive in the market and the cost-benefit of their most popular products is worth it since they stand out above any cheap battery on the market.
You also have the certainty that they are manufactured by a quality company like Duracell. Although they do not surpass the quality products of this brand, they are a very reliable and economical alternative if your needs are not specific and demanding.
