Autozone Free Battery Charging (Ultimate Guide)

Once your car battery dies, you’ll need to visit an auto repair store to recharge it. In many cases, your ignition won’t start when the battery is low. That’s why you should examine your battery’s charge every time.

If you leave the car engine off for many days, the charge also might go down. So, you’ll need to visit a nearby auto service store to recharge the battery. That’s where AutoZone’s free battery charging services come in handy.

Can you charge your car battery in any AutoZone store?

You can recharge your auto battery at any AutoZone store across the U.S. You can drive your vehicle to the store or carry the battery. The workers will recharge the battery without any difficulty.

AutoZone is one of the largest retailers of aftermarket auto accessories and parts. They stock different automotive parts and products that your vehicle will need. Being the biggest supplier of auto accessories and advanced auto parts, they also provide auto-related services.

There are many reasons why your car won’t start. Before swiping the battery, it’s important to find out what causes the glitch. A professional at AutoZone store will conduct a free battery testing to determine which of these things is the source of the problem:

The full performance of your car battery is influenced by the wiring, alternator, and starter. Whenever you have issues with your car battery, technicians at the AutoZone store will examine it. They’ll begin with starter testing, and if they find a problem, they’ll remove the damaged one and replace it. That means you’ll have new battery installation services in the simplest form.

The best part is they charge car batteries in all their stores countrywide. Auto Zone has over 6,100 service centers in the U.S. They’re available in 53 states, where every store offers free car battery charging. However, if you have a high-end vehicle whose battery isn’t easy to access, they’ll advise you to visit another advanced store.

They charge all types of batteries for free. While there are numerous car battery brands, they have the same working model. Since the store supplies different battery brands, the staff knows how to install and charge them. So, no need to worry about the largest automobile retailer not being able to recharge your car battery. However, if you want a car battery replacement, you’ll have to get one from their catalog.

How long will it take the AutoZone store to charge my battery?

AutoZone uses Duralast fast chargers. Their charging process is quick, and they use a gadget to check your battery amperage before determining the amount of charge your battery requires. That means it will take 30 minutes to have a full charge battery.

Types of batteries AutoZone charges

AutoZone stores can charge any type of battery you present them. AutoZone installs gel cell, dry cell, deep cycle, and valve-regulated batteries. They supply battery brands like ACDelco Advantage, Duralast, Odyssey, Optima Red Top, Econocraft, and Valucraft. Since they stock different brands, the employees are conversant with each battery’s requirement and will charge it accordingly.

A brand like Duralast has different types, including Duralast gold and Duralast platinum, whose functionality isn’t the same. Therefore, ensure you do your homework before purchasing a car battery that fits your needs.

What happens if my car battery fails to charge?

AutoZone will recharge your battery if you buy the replacement from their store. Luckily, they sell high-quality and affordable units. Hence it’s a win-win for both parties. Based on the model, type, and the car’s year of manufacture, you might expect a price range of 50-200. You’ll spend between 90-250 for a premium battery, but longevity and durability are assured. But this doesn’t mean other alternatives at AutoZone stores won’t serve you.

If after the free car battery test, they discover you need a battery replacement, the experts will explain the available options. A new unit will be mounted if the car maker has structured the battery space to give easier access. But if the battery is situated in a place that needs the car parts displacement or removal, AutoZone will offer other installation options. This includes recommending a reliable service repair store that can install a battery in a technical place.

Can AutoZone revive dead batteries?

A jump start process or a visit to the local AutoZone retail will determine if your car battery has power and recharge it if you think it’s dead.

Charging your battery at AutoZone might help revive it, but you might need a new battery if it’s completely damaged. Luckily, AutoZone sells a wide range of car batteries. The best part is that top-ranking auto stores such as AutoZone and O’Reilly auto parts stores will engage in dead battery recycling.

Does AutoZone offer free battery installation?

If you buy the battery from other retailers, such as Walmart, the retailer will install the new battery at a fee. The cost depends on what type of battery you purchase. Typically, you’ll need 10-100 based on the complexity of the installation process. However, the services are free if you buy a new battery from any AutoZone store.

Signs that your battery is dying

Some of the indications that you need to charge your battery include the following:

  • Sluggish start: Once you realize that your car battery has issues starting and the temp hasn’t fallen, get it examined and recharged.
  • Dim headlights: Having dim headlights could be an indication of low battery. That means there’s insufficient energy to run the lights and other accessories when the battery is low. Therefore, don’t hesitate to take advantage of the AutoZone free battery charging services.
  • Problems with the stereo: When the car ignition is off, the battery can power the headlights, radio, wipers, and other systems. There might be an issue with your battery health if the car radio doesn’t work.
  • Old batteries: A battery’s life cycle is 4-6 years. So, when a car battery attains the 4-year mark, you must pay close attention to it. You can take it to a nearby AutoZone store to have the experts check the amount of power left and recharge it for free.

Whenever you experience problems with your car battery while at home or driving, you can take it out and bring it to a nearby AutoZone for the best charging at no cost, and you don’t have to be irritated by the charging process since it takes a short time. AutoZone might dispatch a technician with a portable battery charger to fix your issue if you can’t remove the battery from its complicated position. Does AutoZone Install Batteries?

Yes, AutoZone installs batteries.

What Types Of Batteries Does AutoZone Install?

There’s more than one type of car battery, and if you have a certain type, you may want to replace it at the same time.

Lead-Acid Batteries

autozone, free, battery, charging, ultimate, guide

They are made of six cells and reach a voltage of 12.6V when fully charged.

While these batteries are fairly low-maintenance, the electrolytes need to be refilled when they run low.

It is important to install these batteries at a vertical angle to prevent the acid from spilling out.

Gel Batteries

Gel batteries are similar to lead-acid batteries and are a type of flooded battery.

They are a newer design and do not spill easily.

Calcium is used to prevent the acid from spilling out, and silica is added to the electrolytes to thicken them up and turn them into a gel.

It’s a more durable battery and lasts longer than traditional lead-acid batteries.

Deep Cycle Batteries

Deep cycle batteries have a denser material and a thicker shell.

They are heavy-duty, and they draw a lower current but last longer.

They are sometimes called marine batteries and are often used in campers, boats, golf carts, and motorcycles.

They last a long time but can be more expensive than other types of batteries.

When you buy a new battery, you can send in your old battery to take off the core fee and save money on your purchase.

If you have more than one battery, you can also take them into the store.

AutoZone stores do not pay cash for old batteries, but they will offer gift cards or store credit in exchange for them.

Does AutoZone Recycle Old Batteries?

What Other Installation Services Does AutoZone Provide?

AutoZone doesn’t just sell a huge selection of auto parts, but they also offer many free services that allow you to keep your car running while avoiding expensive mechanics and auto repair shops.

In addition to offering free battery charging, testing, and installation services, AutoZone also offers many other free services.

Alternator Testing

The alternator’s primary job is to keep the battery charged while your car is running, but it will also help power the electrical aspects of a vehicle.

It works with the battery to spread this power to various parts of the car.

If your alternator is bad, it may seem like your battery is dead.

The car may not turn over, your lights, radio, and power locks may not work.

AutoZone provides alternator testing that will help you figure out if the alternator is the reason for your trouble or if something else is to blame.

Starter Testing

Starters convert electrical energy into mechanical energy and get the engine moving.

If your starter goes out, your car may not start or may struggle to start.

Many things can cause similar issues to a faulty starter, but AutoZone will test your starter to find out if it’s the cause.

Voltage Regulator Testing

The voltage regulator helps start the engine and power the alternator.

If there is a problem with it, then the car may not start or may not stay running.

A problem with the voltage regulator can look the same as a problem with the alternator or a dead battery.

AutoZone can test the voltage regulator to see if it is working or not.

Oil Recycling

When you change your oil, you will find that you have a lot of old oil that needs to be disposed of.

Many cities do not allow you to dispose of your oil in just any way.

It can be difficult to find a way to do so properly.

AutoZone accepts oil and will recycle it, so you don’t have to worry about it.

Loaner Tools

If you do work on your own vehicle but don’t have the tools you need to get the job done, you can borrow many of them from your local AutoZone.

In most cases, there is no fee, and you only have to provide a refundable deposit.

AutoZone Batteries

AutoZone offers its own line-up of private-label batteries. Like O’Reilly Auto Parts, AutoZone offers four sub-brands of batteries for vehicles. Each sub-brand provides a different level of pricing.

The Econocraft line-up of batteries is the most affordable from AutoZone’s private label brand. This content is owned by moc.sotuaytsur. These batteries are ideal for those who need basic starting power from an older vehicle. Econocraft batteries are about 30% less expensive than the average battery cost.

Duralast is the standard battery brand from AutoZone. In most cases, a Duralast battery will be sufficient for most vehicles. Compared to non-private-label batteries from Diehard, Optima, and ACDelco, these batteries are affordable.

Duralast Gold

Duralast Gold is the premium private label sub-brand from AutoZone. These batteries are ideal for high-use or luxury vehicles. Duralast Gold batteries will have better build construction, offer better starting power, and last longer than Duralast batteries.

Duralast Platinum batteries are the highest quality batteries offered by AutoZone. These batteries are ideal for high-performance vehicles or those who take their vehicles to extreme-weather environments. Duralast Platinum batteries will last longer than any of the other batteries offered by AutoZone.

How Do O’Reilly and AutoZone Batteries Compare?

Here, we will compare both battery brands in terms of selection, quality, pricing, longevity, performance, and warranty.

Both O’Reilly and AutoZone offer you four sub-brands that offer different pricing and quality levels. With both brands, you will likely find the battery that will fit your needs and your budget. In this case, both brands tie in this category.

AutoZone’s selection of Duralast batteries has a better reputation and sells in a higher volume than the private label batteries offered by O’Reilly Auto Parts. If you are picky about battery quality, then you will want to opt for AutoZone.

Both O’Reilly and AutoZone offer four different sub-brands of batteries at different price levels. However, it appears that O’Reilly’s line-up of batteries tends to beat AutoZone’s Duralast line-up of batteries in most cases. Here O’Reilly gets the edge.

Both O’Reilly and AutoZone offer batteries that can provide you with a long life. However, if you want to get the maximum life from your battery, you will want to go with the Duralast Platinum battery from AutoZone. These high-end batteries are known for lasting longer and performing well in extreme weather conditions. The edge here goes to AutoZone.

When it comes to performance, the clear winner is going to be AutoZone. Their line-up of Durlast Gold and Duralast Premium are among the best private-label batteries that you can find on the market. If you want a great battery for your high-end car and don’t want to spend more on a Diehard or ACDelco battery, then going with AutoZone batteries is going to be your choice.

AutoZone’s Duralast battery comes with a two-year warranty, while AutoZone’s Duralast Gold and Duralast Platinum battery come with a three-year warranty. O’Reilly Auto Parts offers a two-year warranty on its Super Start Premium battery and a three-year warranty on its Super Start Extreme and Super Start Platinum battery. Here, both brands tie in when it comes to warranty coverage.

The bottom line on O’Reilly and AutoZone Batteries

So which battery brand is best for you? Shopping strictly on price, you may want to consider O’Reilly Auto Parts. However, if you own a higher-end vehicle or simply want a better quality private label battery, you will want to look at the Durlast brand of AutoZone batteries.

Overall, both O’Reilly Auto Parts and AutoZone offer excellent choices when it comes to private-label batteries, but do check out for great deals before you pull the lever.

Battery Fitting Mistakes

Can you fit your own battery? You sure can. But you should know three common battery fitting errors.

1 Removing car’s computer power – Some cars won’t like to have their batteries removed. It causes the computers to lose track of the sensors they use to manage various systems.

2 Connecting a battery up backways – This is a really common issue and can be spendy to fix.

Anyway, we will avoid these common issues because we will follow some basic battery fitting tips.

3 Failing to calibrate the Battery control module

1 Removing the car’s computer power

This doesn’t tend to be an issue with regular family cars, but the more sophisticated the car, the more computers, and the more likely removing the battery will cause issues.

What type of issues? Mostly irritating type stuff like inop HVAC systems or erratic window controls and poor quality gear changes. And in most cases, these issues fix themselves by just driving the car. (my favorite type of problem)

But sometimes, you have an erratic idle that won’t fix itself and may require a visit to a dealer to set it straight again.

I advise folks who are going to change a battery to use a KAM (Keep Alive Memory) tool; it sends a small voltage to the car’s computers to keep them alive while the battery is disconnected.

2 Connecting up the battery backways

In many cases, connecting up backways just blows a fuse, no biggie, right? And hooking up backways is an easy mistake to make, and it often stems from trying to fit a battery that isn’t suitable, poles on the wrong sides, etc.

But for some unlucky folks hooking up backways can result in some spendy repair bills.

I wrote a post about hooking up your battery backways, and you can check that out here – “Battery sparked now won’t start.”

I also wrote a post about battery terminal identification, and you can check it out here Unmarked car battery terminals.

3 Battery Control Module

Modern vehicles use a computer specifically to manage your battery health; when you replace the battery, the battery control module (computer) should be calibrated – You tell the computer, ” Hey, I’m a new battery, and you don’t need to charge me at the same rate you did the old battery.

If the control module isn’t notified of the battery change, it may overcharge your new battery, which will shorten its life. Anyway, I wrote a post about swapping out your battery, it covers all of the above in more detail, and you can check it out here – “How hard to change a car battery?

The Best Place To Buy a Car Battery

Finding yourself in need of a new car battery can be frustrating, so knowing ahead of time where to shop for the best price can be a big help.

In this article, I’ll take a close look at a few of the best places to buy car batteries. You’ll find and information for Advance Auto Parts, Costco and NAPA among others. I visited each of the stores’ websites to see current on car batteries, the length of warranties and whether the installation is included in the purchase price.

Where To Buy a Car Battery

When it comes to deciding where to buy a car battery, there are a few things to keep in mind: Make sure that you’re shopping for the right size battery, be sure to compare prices, familiarize yourself with the warranty and see if the installation is included. You should also take the time to check the ratings and reliability of a certain brand or battery model before buying.

If you do all those things, you’ll likely find the best deals on car batteries at a store near you instead of at online retailers. On top of great prices, you’ll also typically find longer warranties (compared to online stores) and free installation.

I’ve found that Costco, Walmart, Sam’s Club and Advance Auto Parts are great places to buy a car battery. AutoZone and NAPA are also worth checking out!

Below, you’ll find more detailed information on these retailers including where to find the best price.

The Top 6 Places To Buy a Car Battery

To see where I could get the best overall deal, I compared the prices, warranties and installation fees for similar lead-acid 24/24F car batteries. This size battery fits several Acura, Honda, Infiniti, Lexus, Nissan and Toyota models including the car I drive.

Here’s what I found in December 2022.

Warranties may vary based on the original date of purchase.

As you can see, you’ll have access to low prices, reliable warranties and free installation at stores you can visit in person.

Overall, I found the lowest overall price at Costco. However, Costco doesn’t offer installation, which means I’d either have to install it myself or pay to have it installed somewhere else. But Walmart will install a car battery, no matter where you buy it for only 15.

Walmart offered the second-lowest price including free installation and a great warranty. Plus, you can use your Walmart rewards card to get 5% cash back by ordering the car battery online.

Sam’s Club offered the next-best deal. followed by NAPA, Advance Auto Parts and AutoZone.

You can also find a wide variety of car batteries at Amazon for reasonable prices, but you won’t get the best deal. The warranties vary by battery, and in many cases, they aren’t valid because you’re buying through Amazon instead of a dealer certified by the manufacturer. And of course, installation is not included.

For the best overall deal, be sure to check out these top six places to buy a car battery.

Price Range: 109-179 Available Brands: Interstate

If you’re a Costco member, you won’t be surprised to hear that this is where you’ll find some of the lowest on quality car batteries. Costco carries only Interstate Batteries. which are highly rated in several sizes and models by Consumer Reports (subscription required).

While you can’t order a car battery online from Costco, you can use the store’s online battery finder to see which batteries will fit your car and how much they cost. From there, you can visit your nearest Costco to make your purchase.

Costco offers a 36-month limited warranty on most batteries. but unfortunately, you won’t be able to get your battery installed here. Again, keep in mind that Walmart offers installation for batteries bought elsewhere for only 15. That still means you’ll most likely be saving big with this purchase compared to the at stores with free installation.

Price Range: 59-215 Available Brands: EverStart and Optima

Based on my research, Walmart offered some of the lowest in addition to great warranties and free installation if you buy your battery from the same location. Be sure to make your purchase online and use your Walmart rewards card for an additional 5% cash back.

You’ll mostly see EverStart car batteries at Walmart. That brand has several models that get high ratings from Consumer Reports. EverStart Value automotive batteries are available from 59 and up.

To get started, visit the website and enter your car make, model and year. This will filter your results by batteries that will fit. From there, you can browse the selection and order the battery online to be picked up in-store nearby.

Sam’s Club

Price Range: 102-238 Available Brands: Duracell

Sam’s Club is a good place to find car batteries at a good price, but of course, you have to be a member. The warehouse carries Duracell brand batteries, which Consumer Reports labeled “Best Buy” options.

Sam’s Club locations with Tire Battery centers offer free car battery installation. Batteries are also covered by a free replacement warranty for three years from the date that you buy them.

While the car batteries are available only in-store, you can still browse the available selection online. This is a great way to compare prices, read reviews, and check availability.

Advance Auto Parts

Price Range: 109-359 Available Brands: DieHard, Optima, AutoCraft and more

While it may not seem like it at first glance, you can get some of the lowest available on car batteries from Advance Auto Parts.

When you visit the website, you can enter your email address to get a 20% discount on your first purchase. Even if you’re not a first-time Advance Auto Parts shopper, you can usually find an active promo code on the website. Finally, be sure to return the battery later to collect your 22 refundable core charge (be sure to save that paperwork!).

You’ll find DieHard, Optima and AutoCraft batteries among the brands at Advance Auto Parts. Warranties vary by product, but in general, expect to see a 2-3 year free replacement guarantee for most batteries Advance sells. Advance Auto Parts also offers i nstallation and testing at no additional charge.

Price Range: 79-528 Available Brands: Duralast, ACDelco, Optima and more

What to Know About the AutoZone Warranty

Almost every new vehicle part you purchase from AutoZone is covered by an AutoZone warranty. Just as official manufacturer parts are guaranteed to be free of defects, so too are the batteries and aftermarket parts sold by AutoZone.

Don’t pay for a new part when you can get a replacement for free. This article reviews key information you need to know about the AutoZone warranty, such as how it works and how long it lasts.

We’ll also recommend several top-rated extended car warranties to keep more of your vehicle protected. If you like the idea of having your car’s parts covered in the case of an unexpected breakdown, coverage from one of the best extended car warranty companies can protect the majority of vehicle parts, not just the ones you purchase at AutoZone.

What Is the AutoZone Warranty?

AutoZone provides warranty protection for most vehicle parts and batteries that it sells. The AutoZone warranty is a guarantee that these components are free from defects and are built to last for a certain amount of time. Parts that fail or malfunction during the warranty period can be replaced or refunded at any AutoZone location or fulfillment center.

How Does the AutoZone Warranty Work?

If a part that you purchase at AutoZone fails within the AutoZone warranty period, return the failed component to any AutoZone store and bring your receipt. You may also be asked to provide a valid, government-issued ID. The store will replace the part at no additional cost or give you a refund.

Like any automotive coverage plan, the AutoZone warranty only covers parts that fail after normal use. It does not cover damage due to abuse, misuse, improper installation, off-road use or caused by another failed part. The length of the AutoZone warranty varies by part.

Do You Need a Receipt to Return a Part at AutoZone?

If you have lost your receipt, you can still return your AutoZone part by calling AutoZone Customer Support at 800-288-6966 and requesting the relevant transaction information.

How Long Is the AutoZone Warranty?

AutoZone warranty lengths vary by part and will be outlined on your receipt or can be found on AutoZone’s website by searching your part number. How to Cover Parts With an Extended Car Warranty

The AutoZone warranty will cover parts you purchase from AutoZone, but it doesn’t extend to the parts already in your vehicle. That means the part will have to have broken down once before it’s covered. Additionally, the AutoZone warranty only covers parts – not the labor to replace the part in your vehicle. If you want more coverage, an extended auto warranty may be a good idea.

All new vehicles come with a warranty, but these typically expire after three years. To continue your warranty protection, you can buy an extended vehicle service contract to pay for the cost of unexpected repairs or breakdowns. Check out two of our top recommended providers, Endurance and CARCHEX, below.
