Apple in April 2022 launched a Self Service Repair program for the iPhone, which is designed to allow Apple device owners to do their own repairs in their homes using Apple parts, repair manuals, and tools.

In this guide, we walk through everything you need to know about the Self Repair program, including whether it’s worth it to use over alternative repair options.

Devices That Can Be Self Repaired

At the current time, the Self Service Repair program covers several recent ‌iPhone‌ generations, including the iPhone 12 models, iPhone 13 models, and the 2022 iPhone SE. A full list of covered ‌iPhone‌ models is below:

Components That Can Be Repaired

Apple‘s manuals, tools, and components are available for the following repairs for each ‌iPhone‌:

  • Display and adhesive

  • Taptic Engine
  • Upper and lower cowlings

If another ‌iPhone‌ component is broken, it is not able to be self repaired and will need to be taken to an Apple Store, Apple Authorized Service Provider, or an independent repair shop.

Supported Mac models include several dozen parts that can be replaced, including casings, fans, speakers, circuit boards, display, sensors, trackpad, and more.

Tool Kit Rentals

Almost all of the repairs require specialized tools designed by Apple, and they can be obtained through renting one of Apple’s repair kits. Repair kits are 49 to rent, but you have to put down a ~1,200 deposit to ensure you return the repair kit.

You have seven days with the repair kit, after which it must be returned to Apple through UPS. When a tool kit is first rented, Apple charges an authorization fee that will disappear once the kit is returned. Apple says that users will be charged for any missing or damaged tools.

A repair kit that includes nearly all of the tools that you need sounds convenient, but the one for ‌iPhone‌ models comes in two parts that are heavy and unwieldy. The first part of the kit weighs in at 43 pounds, and the second part of the kit weighs in at 36 pounds, for a total of 79 pounds. These kits are so heavy that Apple offers tips for lifting them on the repair website:

  • Think before you lift. Size up the object, if it is too bulky get help!
  • Plan the lift. Know where you are going and have a clear path.
  • Stack the smaller case on the larger, extend the handle and roll versus carrying the two cases.
  • Balance the load you are carrying between both hands.
  • Have a good base of support. spread your feet apart shoulder width or more.
  • Bend with your knees and hips, and keep your head up.
  • Feet first. Turn with your feet not your torso.
  • Take your time.

Stacked together, the kits are 20 inches wide and 47 inches high, but they do include a wheeled case for transportation. Each kit includes a battery press, a display press, a heated display removal fixture, a repair tray, adhesive cutter, protective covers, and torque drivers, with a full list available on the Self Service Repair website.

Tool kits are customized for each Apple device model, and it’s worth noting that there are some parts that you will need to purchase separately as not all tools are included. Most of the tools that are not included may be items you have at home or can purchase inexpensively at repair or hardware stores.

Mac tool kits are generally significantly smaller and lighter in the range of 4–8 pounds, although the ‌MacBook Air‌ kit weighs in at nearly 40 pounds largely due to the inclusion of a display press.

Tool Purchases

The Self Service Repair Store offers hundreds of parts and tools that can be purchased on a standalone basis for ‌iPhone‌ and Mac repairs. You do not have to use one of Apple’s rental kits that are outlined above, and you can instead purchase each tool you might need.

That will get expensive, though, because some of Apple’s proprietary repair tools are pricey. Some of the sample for ‌iPhone‌ tools are below, with many of these tools required for each repair.

If you are planning to do multiple repairs it may be worth purchasing each component piecemeal, but for a one-off repair, it’s much more affordable to rent a kit.

Repair Pricing

When taking into account the 49 rental fee of Apple’s toolkit, repair pricing is in some cases more expensive than simply taking a device to Apple for repair.

Here are a list of repair for the ‌iPhone 13‌ as an example, with the repair kit rental price included. Each of of these is calculated using the repair component bundle that Apple recommends. Apple does give a discount for sending replaced components in for recycling, so that is also included in the pricing.

Note that this pricing does not take into account the effort of returning the repair kit, plus it requires the replaced components to be shipped back to Apple. It also does not factor in the time spent doing the repair, which can be lengthy for those who are new to repairs.

Comparatively, it costs 69 to have Apple replace an iPhone 13 battery out of warranty, so it is not worth it to do a battery replacement on your own. Likewise, it costs 279 to get a broken screen replaced by Apple even if you don’t have a warranty, which is cheaper than the self repair.

For other repairs, you may save some money based on Apple’s out of warranty repair/replacement costs. Non battery and display repairs are priced at 449 for the ‌iPhone 13‌. Of course, this repair price is the price that Apple sets, and Apple Authorized Service Providers may charge less.

If you have AppleCare, there is no reason to even consider a self repair because every repair is 99 or under.

Repair Requirements

Apple does not allow you to order any old repair part you want.- all repair purchases are tied to a specific ‌iPhone‌ or Mac. When creating a new order, you need to provide either a serial number or an IMEI from your device that you’re repairing.

The serial number of the device must match the part you’re ordering. So, for example, if you want to purchase an ‌iPhone 13‌ display bundle, you need an ‌iPhone 13‌ serial number or IMEI. This essentially restricts repairs to device owners and does not allow for independent repair shops to bulk order parts from Apple.

After installation, many of the repairs require you to get in touch with Apple to verify the part through a System Configuration process.

Returning Parts for Recycling

After you’ve completed a repair, the components that you’ve removed may be able to be sent back to Apple. If that’s the case, and Apple is able to use those components, you can get a small discount on the cost of your repair.

With an ‌iPhone 13‌ battery repair, for example, you can get 24.15 back in credit after sending in your old battery, which drops the price of the repair components to 46.84 (plus the 49 for a toolkit).

The Self Repair Experience vs. Apple Repairs

We tested out the repair process with an ‌iPhone 12 mini‌ battery replacement, and found that it was difficult for a person with no repair experience to complete. It was an involved and time-consuming process that took nearly a full day and required tools that even Apple didn’t provide in its toolkit.

At the end of the repair, it turned out to be more expensive than having Apple do the battery replacement, and overall, it was not worth the time and money invested. Make sure to check out the video up above for a full overview.

Some repairs, such as those for the camera and the Taptic Engine may be worth it because you can save some money based on what it costs to get those repairs from Apple, but make sure to thoroughly read the repair manual ahead of time to know what you’re getting into. For most repairs, it is going to be easiest to get in contact with an Apple retail store, an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or an independent repair shop that uses Apple components to get your device fixed.

Supported Countries

The Self Service Repair program is available in the United States for all supported products, and in late 2022 it was expanded to a number of European countries including Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Device support in those countries is, however, limited to ‌iPhone‌ and Mac laptop models.

Testing Apple’s Crash Detection Using Roller Coasters: Here’s What I Learned

Over the weekend, reports indicate that several amusements parks are experiencing issues with Apple’s new Crash Detection activating while users are riding roller coasters.

Last month, I tested the new Crash Detection feature at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. I never got Crash Detection to activate on any ride, so today, let’s take a look at some possible reasons why.

Roller Coasters Setting off Apple’s New Crash Detection

According to reports from Joanna Stern of The Wall Street Journal, King’s Island near Cincinnati, Ohio has received no less than six calls in regards to a rollercoaster setting off Crash Detection. Primarily, it is the ride Mystic Timbers that seems to be causing the most trouble for the park.

Additionally, reports from Coasters 101 also indicate that Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee is not only reporting issues of Crash Detection accidentally setting off, but reports also indicate that the park has posted signs at the front entrance of rides stating that users should put their phones on Airplane Mode, or not bring them onto the ride.

Coasters 101 reached out to their audience, and asked if any users were reporting any other issues with rides setting off Crash Detection. According to users at Coaster 101, Tumbili at Kings Dominion, Verboten at Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Wonder Woman Golden Lasso at Six Flags Fiesta Texas, Alpengeist at Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Fury 325 at Carowinds and Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure at Universal’s Island of Adventures have all managed to set off Crash Detection.

An Official Response

In an article for TechCrunch, Apple responded to the situation, stating that the G Force detection is the largest determining factor for Crash Detection. TechCrunch spoke with Vice President, Sensing Connectivity, Ron Huang and Vice President, Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing, Kaiann Drance about the situation.

Drance Stated, “It’s mostly the G Force detection, it’s able to detect G Force up to 256 Gs. That was one of the key differences for the new accelerometers that the new watches and phones have.”

However, Huang also notes that there isn’t a “one size fits all” model for Crash Detection: it is built for different situations.

There’s no silver bullet, in terms of activating crash detection, says Huang. It’s hard to say how many of these things have to trigger, because it’s not a straight equation. Depending how fast the traveling speed was earlier, determines what signals we have to see later on, as well. Your speed change, combined with the impact force, combined with the pressure change, combined with the sound level, it’s all a pretty dynamic algorithm.

Looking at My Own Tests

Back in September, you may have heard on The Daily Observation podcast or in my coverage of the Apple Watch SE that I went to Cedar Point to test Crash Detection. Ultimately, I decided not to write extensively on my research, for I was not able to set off Crash Detection at any point during my trip. I rode the top rides at the park (Maverick, Raptor, Magnum, Millennium Force, Valravn, Rougarou). I did also ride Steel Vengeance, but you are not allowed to bring anything onto that ride, so I was not able to bring my Apple Watch. (Note, some people will say they have brought things on Steel Vengeance, CP metal detects you, so it all depends on how security feels. With that said, you shouldn’t really be taking things on the ride.)

At no point was I able to set off Crash Detection. In fact, the only time time I was thinking it would even come close would be during the end run of Valravn. After today’s news, I think there might be two main reasons why. Let’s take a look at each.

Where We’re Going, We Don’t Need Roads

My first thought is issues with roads. While a user in Coaster 101’s Комментарии и мнения владельцев did say that they set off Crash Detection during Raptor at Cedar Point, I have some doubts. First, I road it twice with no issue. Now, this user may have been using an iPhone 14, whereas I used an Apple Watch SE, so that may have an impact on why mine didn’t go off. However, I have not been seeing any reports of this being an issue for the Raptor at Cedar Point.

Given that King’s Island is owned by Cedar Fair, and is thus owned by the same people as Cedar Point, I feel there would be reports from Cedar Point before King’s Island were this an issue for Sandusky.

When Apple initially contacted WSJ about Michael Barabe’s destruction derby tests, Apple did mention that GPS will also look to see if the user is actually on a road.

I don’t think Cedar Point is experiencing this issue because Cedar Point is on a Peninsula: there are very little roads that actually surround the park. There certainly isn’t a highway for miles, at that. However, almost all of the parks mentioning that they are having issues with Crash Detection seem to be near a major road. Not all of them, but a good portion of them. I think this may play into Crash Detection setting off on a roller coaster.

Getting Intense

Second would be the intensity of the rides. Now, Cedar Point boasts some rather extreme rides. Millennium Force, of course, was a world-breaking roller coaster at some point. While the rides at Cedar Point are intense, they’re also fairly smooth. However, Mystic Timers at King’s Island is a wooden ride. Wooden rides are typically far bumpier than steel or hybrid rides. It sort of makes sense that it would set off Crash Detection, as it is likely a bumpy ride.

However, that wouldn’t explain why Wonder Woman Golden Lasso is setting off Crash Detection. Though, it is worth mentioning that Six Flags Fiesta Texas is surrounded by a highway and a major road. Additionally, Fury 325 is somewhat close to I-77 as well as another, smaller road. It is also worth mentioning that Millennium Force at Cedar Point is adjacent to a smaller road, though I have ridden that ride numerous times and never set off Crash Detection. The road next to Millennium Force is also not a major road.

Different Coasters, Different Results

While there is certainly a lot of different data that goes into Crash Detection, it seems that roller coasters that may be bumpier or near highways may have a larger chance of setting off Crash Detection. Of course, there are roller coasters that feature elements that Cedar Point does not have (Golden Lasso is a style of coaster Cedar Point doesn’t have), so intensity may also play into it. However, given that Cedar Point still has plenty of intense coasters, it seems to depend on the style of intensity.

I will admit, one final issue with my own testing may have been that I was playing with my Apple Watch too much. While I tried really hard not to look at it, I still did play with it after certain rides. This may have stopped Crash Detection from activating. However, given that CP does not seem to be having this issue (at least one that hasn’t been made public), I’m not fully certain that this is an issue.

Looking Ahead at Roller Coasters and Crash Detection

At this point, it seems like even Apple is attempting to fine-tune exactly when and where Crash Detection should appropriately activate. It can certainly be a frustrating experience for EMT’s and 911 services that operate for these parks.

If you want to really ensure that you don’t set off Crash Detection while riding a ride, leave all your loose articles with a non-rider. If you’re unable to do that, make sure your phone is in Airplane Mode before getting on a ride. Fanny parks are also your friend when at an amusement park.

Additionally, you can also turn off Crash Detection on your iPhone 14 or Apple Watch.

For Apple Watch users, on your device, go to Settings SOS Crash Detection and turn off Call After a Severe Crash.

For iPhone, go to Settings Emergency SOS Call After Severe Crash.

The Button (FGBHPB-101)

FIBARO Button is a HomeKit-enabled, compact, battery-powered wireless controller using Bluetooth® low energy technology.

It allows you to control HomeKit accessories using Automations.

Various actions may be triggered with one clicks, two clicks or by holding the button down.

With its small design and wireless communication, the FIBARO Button can be conveniently mounted on any surface and in any position or location at home, e.g. beside the bed or under the desk.

Basic activation

  • Press and turn the button counter-clockwise to open the casing.
  • Remove the battery blocker and check if the battery is placed correctly.
  • Press and turn the button clockwise to close the casing.
  • Pair the accessory, as described in the next section: Pairing the accessory.
  • Install the accessory in desired location using the attached self-adhesive pad.

Pairing the accessory

  • Open the Settings app on your iOS device.
  • Go to the Bluetooth® section, and turn the Bluetooth® on.
  • Place the accessory next to your iOS device.
  • Open a HomeKit compatible app of your choosing on your iOS device.
  • Find HomeKit Setup Code on the last page of Quick Start Guide included in the box that looks like this:

Reset

Resetting the Button to factory defaults:Reset procedure allows to restore the accessory back to its factory settings including HomeKit pairing.

  • Click the Button exactly 3 times.
  • Press and hold the Button for at least 10 seconds.
  • Long beep will confirm resetting.

Functionalities

The Button detects if it was clicked one time, two time or held, then reports it to your iOS device. Automations can be created based on the detected action (see an example).

The Button measures battery level every 24 hours and reports it to your iOS device. Additionally, if battery level is below 15%, the accessory will report low level battery status to your iOS device.

The Button is equipped with a built-in buzzer that signals status of the accessory, like identification (3 triple beeps) or reset confirmation (long beep). If enabled, the accessory can also respond to actions with sound signals. The accessory will confirm number of performed clicks with the same amount of beeps (e.g. two clicks. two beeps). Holding will be signaled with intermittent tone.
