Anker 535 Power Bank Recall

In February 2023, Anker voluntarily recalled thousands of 535 Power Bank (Power Core 20K), Model: A1366 because it can overheat, posing a risk of fires and burn injuries.

Anker 535 Power Bank Linked to House Fire in Maryland

The recalled Anker 535 Power Bank was the “most probable cause” of a house fire near Leitersburg, Maryland, according to fire officials and local news.

The fire was reported at 4:02 a.m. on February 10, when a fire alarm went off and an alarm company called the homeowners. They discovered a fire in an unoccupied bedroom with the door closed.

The homeowners shot a fire extinguisher into the room, closed the door, and evacuated the home. The fire was contained in the room and no injuries were reported.

Firefighters traced the fire to a suitcase that contained an Anker 535 Power Bank charger that had been used about a week ago. There were no other electrical devices or anything else in the suitcase that could have sparked the fire, according to Fire Chief Kirk Mongan.

What Should I Do?

Check the model number of your Anker power bank by looking on the bottom of battery. It should read: 535 Power Bank (PowerCore 20K) with Model: A1366.

Anker is asking consumers who own a recalled 535 Power Bank to immediately stop using the device and store it in a safe location (not in your house or near anything that can catch on fire).

Do not throw the battery into the trash or recycling bin, because this poses a fire hazard. Instead, you must dispose of the battery at a facility that accepts lithium-ion batteries.

You can also get a refund for your power bank by visiting https://www.anker.com/a1366-recall-form.

Lithium-Ion Battery Fires

Lithium-ion battery explosions and fires are becoming an increasing problem, as the popularity of these lightweight and powerful batteries continues to grow.

Sometimes these fires are caused by user error, such as physical damage to the battery case, or an external heat source. In other cases, fires are caused by manufacturing errors that cause the power bank to overheat and explode.

Amazon’s power banks are exploding; here are 3 good ones that won’t

Through Amazon’s AmazonBasics brand, the company has been able to offer consumer electronics at extremely affordable prices. The products typically shun flashy branding and unnecessary features to provide a no-frills, low-cost option for those who can’t pay a premium for certain things.

But perhaps QA is one area we have to start questioning with AmazonBasics items, what with the company needing to recall about 260,000 power banks due to risks of fire and burn.

The recall was announced by USCPSC, the government agency responsible for investigating, reporting, and handling recalls as it pertains to defects which threaten the safety of the public.

Here’s the full description of which batteries are affected:

This recall involves six versions of AmazonBasics’ portable lithium-ion battery chargers/power banks: 16,100 mAh; 10,000 mAh; 5,600 mAh; 2,000 mAh with micro USB cable; 3,000 mAh and 3,000 mAh with USB micro cable. The rubberized or metallic power banks are black and rectangular. They measure about 3 inches long by 1.4 inch high by 0.9 inch wide.

The power banks were sold with or without a USB charger cable and a carrying pouch. The AmazonBasics logo is printed on the front of the unit. Product ID number B00LRK8EVO, B00LRK8HJ8, B00LRK8I7O, B00LRK8IV0, B00LRK8JDC or B00ZQ4JQAA is printed on the back of the unit.

The USCPSC says Amazon is contacting all known purchasers of the battery, though you’re also encouraged to call Amazon for a return and refund on your own if you happen to have one. You can call toll-free at 855-215-5134 from 8AM to 5PM Eastern Monday through Saturday. If online is more your speed, you can submit your details at this link.

With that, you’re probably immediately in the market for new power banks. The good news is that there’s a crap ton to choose from, and while few quality ones come close to those AmazonBasics price tags, they’re still affordable enough to fit within a modest budget given you save a bit. Here are three good power banks we recommend checking out.

Anker PowerCore Series

Anker remains one of the best options for battery charging needs (among the billion other things they’re into). The company’s PowerCore lineup offers a nice mix of quality and function, while also being sleek, unassuming battery packs that can fit snugly into your or favorite bag with ease. PowerIQ tech ensures your devices get the juice they need at fast, steady, and — most importantly — safe charging rates.

Those who just need a reliable road mate to keep their smartphones topped off can opt for a 10,000mAh pack, big enough to charge your smartphone a few times over. There’s also the ridiculous 26,8000mAh pack if you have a little more gadgetry to power.

RAVPower

RAVPower is one of the brands we don’t have a second thought in recommending. Their namesake is inspired by their craft, after all, and that love for it shows in their power banks. Take, for instance, this top-rated 20,100mAh power bank which offers Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 and USB-C compatibility for newer devices, or this massive 32,000mAh unit with enough charging speed to get even the loftiest tablet batteries to full in a relatively short amount of time. And Smart charging safeguards ensure it won’t ever serve up more than your devices can handle.

Jackery Titan

Jackery’s power banks deserve mention as a line of tried and true batteries made with premium backbone. The Titan series packs all its Smart, fast charging goodness into an aluminum shell, something you won’t often find in its price range. It’s not even that the aluminum does anything to make it any better than its competitors, but it’s just nice, and lets us know this company is serious about quality in every facet.

Audible already has an amazing Prime Day offer – 3 months free

Amazon’s massive Prime Day sales event is just around the corner, taking place July 11 and 12. But you don’t have to wait until then to score some of the best and biggest deals. One such deal is a free Audible Premium Plus membership for three straight months. Normally, one month of Premium Plus is 15 so that’s a 45 value. You don’t have to decide if that’s something you’re interested in right away since access lasts until July 31. The only catch is that you have to be an Amazon Prime member to redeem the offer.

WHAT IS AUDIBLE?

Audible is Amazon’s service that provides members access to a range of audio-based entertainment. It’s best known for its huge library of audiobooks, including many that are exclusive to Audible. It also includes podcasts, music or white noise to help you sleep as well as meditation aides.

HOW DOES AUDIBLE WORK?

Audible content is typically accessed through memberships. You can also buy audiobooks piecemeal without a membership, though you still need an Amazon account to make those purchases and keep track of your digital collection. You don’t need an Amazon Prime account to use Audible.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT AUDIBLE MEMBERSHIPS?

The two Audible memberships are called Audible Plus and Audible Premium Plus.

  • Audible Plus costs 7.95 a month and gives you access to a curated selection of Audible originals and other audiobooks.
  • Audible Premium Plus, the membership offered in the Prime Day deal, costs 14.95 a month and includes everything in Audible Plus. It also gives you one credit a month you can use to “buy” an audiobook of your choosing. There’s also a two-credit version of Premium Plus that costs 22.95 a month and annual versions of both the one- and two-credit plans that cost 149.50 and 229.50 a year, respectively.

BEST HEADPHONES AND EARBUDS

Apple’s wireless earbuds are among the best available. The latest version offers up to 6 hours of listening time with the included charging case extending that to 30 hours.

These earbuds have up to 5 hours of listening time, extended up to 24 with the charging case. The real draw is the Adaptive Sound feature that adjusts your volume for you based on the noise levels around you.

These earbuds have up to 8 hours of listening time, extended up to 29 hours with the charging case. You can also get up to an hour of listening time off just five minutes of charging.

These headphones are perfect for those who need to wear them for extended periods. They have up to 35 hours of battery life, have active noise canceling and are easily adjusted so they can fit perfectly.

These budget headphones don’t sound or feel like an economic buy. They also have active noise canceling, a feature that usually comes with more expensive devices. Available in black, silver and blue.

Anker’s new PowerHouse 1229Wh hits nicest price yet at 420 off, more from 30

Today only, as part of its New Years Sale, Amazon is now discounting a collection of Anker portable power stations, Thunderbolt docks, and other gear with free shipping across the board. Amongst all of the other discounts, its entire collection of off-grid energy solutions are now on sale and the headliner falls to the 757 PowerHouse 1229Wh at 979.99. Normally fetching 1,400, today’s offer is marking one of the first discounts to date, and arrives with a whopping 420 in savings attached. We last saw it at 1,250 earlier in the fall, and now this holiday price cut is well undercutting that with an all-time low attached.

Delivering one of its most capable portable power station yet, this 757 model just launched earlier in the spring with the ability to dish out 1,500W of power over an array of ports for keeping all of the gear at the campsite, tailgate, or just around the house in a power outage. Alongside six AC outlets, there’s also a pair of 100W USB-C ports, four USB-A slots, and a typically car jack to complement the onboard display. We breakdown the experience a bit further in our launch coverage.

Also joining in on the Gold Box savings, the Anker PowerHouse 512Wh is down to 419.99. You’d more regularly pay 550 with this marking one of the best discounts to date while matching our previous Black Friday mention. Packing all of Anker’s usual portable power station perks into a redesigned package, this more recent offering arrives with an internal 512Wh battery. That pairs with a multitude of ports for refueling your everyday carry like four AC outlets, a 60W USB-C PD port, three USB-A slots, and a car socket, all of which share 500W of power between them. An integrated LED light on the front and carrying handle make it an even better companion for camping, or just having on-hand for power outages at home.

Power your entire campsite with this portable station

ALLPOWERSDirect (99% positive lifetime feedback) via Amazon is offering its 200W Portable Power Station for 119.99 shipped once you clip the on-page coupon. Normally 150, this 30 discount marks the second-best price that we’ve tracked all-time, coming within 10 of the lowest discount that we’ve only seen twice before. This portable battery packs a 154Wh capacity and is perfect for running your small campsite without a gas generator. It features two 200W 110V AC port, two 3A USB-A ports, a 60W USB-C output, and even a 10W Qi wireless charging pad on top. You can power the station in three different ways as well, including a 110V wall outlet, solar panel, or over USB-C, with the fastest method to recharge being with a 99W solar panel in as quick as 1.5 hours. The overall package here is quite small too, measuring only 7.87 by 6.7 by 1.96 inches and weighing just three pounds, making it easy to pack and bring with you anywhere, too.

Urgent portable charger recall: Stop using this dangerous battery pack immediately

Hyper Products customers who purchased one of the larger HyperJuice battery packs that can recharge laptops in addition to mobile devices should know there’s a recall for a 130W model. The USB-C battery pack can overheat while charging, posing a serious fire hazard.

HyperJuice has received two reports of the battery overheating that resulted in smoke, melting, and property damage. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported so far.

HyperJuice USB-C battery pack recall

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published the USB-C battery pack recall report at this link. Buyers in Canada and Mexico should find similar announcements from local regulators.

The HyperJuice recall concerns battery packs in gray and silver with the same model number: HJ307. The battery packs measure 3 inches wide by 7 inches long. The model number is printed on the bottom of the pack.

amazon, power, banks, exploding, here, good

Hyper sold around 13,700 HyperJuice battery packs in the US. It also sold 151 units in Canada and 7 in Mexico.

The battery packs from this recall were available from BH Photo Video stores in New York and from the retailer’s website. Furthermore, Hyper sold the products online in its own store and through Indiegogo and Kickstarter campaigns.

The 130W HyperJuice battery packs were available in stores between October 2018 and April 2022, retailing for between 122 and 158.

What you should do

Hyper urges HyperJuice customers who purchased the 130W battery pack in this recall to stop using it immediately. Customers should contact Hyper Products for a refund. The company will make the refund available as a store credit for the purchase price of the product.

The recall announcement doesn’t mention a course of action for the potentially faulty HyperJuice battery pack. It’s unclear how customers should dispose of the product. But consumers can contact Hyper using the information available at this link.

The CPSC also notes the recall action is made in conjunction with Canadian and Mexican authorities. But the recall announcement doesn’t offer links to recall reports for those two countries.

Separately, Hyper set up a page on its website detailing the recall. The website also offers information about other products included recently in a separate recall action, the stackable 65W and 100W USB-C chargers. Those chargers can also overheat and cause accidental fires.
