AAA battery types
Alkaline batteries AAA R3 are currently the most popular type of these batteries. The high energy density is caused by the potassium hydroxide used in them. Performance and use of AAA alkaline batteries
AAA alkaline batteries were invented already in 1959. Their construction is based on two electrodes. a cathode and an anode and an electrolyte. The anode is zinc powder, the cathode is manganese oxide powder, while the electrolyte is potassium hydroxide. These substances are not found in ordinary batteries. Alkaline AAA batteries are primarily above average life. They are also much more durable than standard batteries. Their big advantage is high resistance to external factors, especially to high and low temperatures.
AAA alkaline batteries are dedicated to all those devices that are characterized by high power consumption. For this reason they are used in electric shavers and razors, cameras and video cameras, remote-controlled toys, mobile music players and other modern devices.
Technical parameters of AAA R3 batteries
AAA R3 batteries have a nominal voltage of 1.5V. As for their identification, we can distinguish a special type of AAA R3 batteries, namely LR03. This is a symbol that indicates that we are dealing with efficient alkaline batteries with a long life and high resistance to external factors. Batteries differ in capacity, which is one of the key parameters worth paying attention to when choosing them. The best AAA batteries have a capacity of 1200 mAh and more. Given the small size of batteries, this is an impressive result. AAA alkaline batteries can be stored for a relatively long time. It is estimated that they retain their technical parameters and are safe to use for 5-7 years.

Amazon Basics Alkaline AAA Review
These may not be big-name branded batteries, but the Amazon Basics Alkaline AAA are excellent performers. Scoring extremely well in my high-drain tests, the overall high-capacity of these batteries demonstrates that they would work well for lower-drain uses, too, such as in remote controls. Available in a wide range of pack sizes and at superb prices, these are a top buy.
The majority of budget batteries don’t have a very good reputation for performance, but the Amazon Basics line has proved itself to be able to compete with the big names. In my tests, the Amazon Basics Alkaline AA batteries proved their worth, and the smaller Amazon Basics Alkaline AAA are just as good.
High capacity, low price and with good results in my drain tests, these are excellent batteries for all jobs.
As with its other batteries, Amazon doesn’t provide any detailed performance or spec information for the Amazon Basics Alkaline AAA batteries. All the company says is that the batteries have a 10-year shelf life (pretty standard for alkaline batteries) and that they’re suitable for all jobs, covering high drain, such as in torches, and low drain for items such as remote controls. Amazon also says that its batteries are built to prevent leakage during storage.
To test performance I use an Ansmann Energy XC3000, running its drain test, which operates at 600mA (/-20%). This is a relatively high-drain task. I bought a set of Amazon Basics Alkaline AAA batteries and picked four at random from the box for testing. I checked their starting voltage, which was 1.5V – which is spot on for a set of alkaline batteries.
Next, I completed the first drain test, which saw the batteries achieve, on average, a capacity of 560mAh – that’s the best result out of all the AAA batteries that I’ve tested.
Next, I let the batteries cool down for a few hours and then repeated the test to see if there was any charge left. This second test returned an average of 25mAh, for a total overall capacity of 585mAh – the second-highest overall.
What these results show is that the Amazon Basics Alkaline AAA batteries can be efficiently drained at high load, yet the overall high capacity makes them a good choice for low-drain uses, too, such as in remote controls.
The Amazon Basics Alkaline AAA are available in packs of 8, 12, 20, 48 or 100. range from around 75p per battery down to around 30p per battery. I’ve listed the price for the 12-pack (around 58p per battery), since it gives a good balance between the overall price and the number of batteries.
Should you buy it?
If you want high-performing batteries for all types of use, these budget AAA batteries are a brilliant choice.
Overall tested capacity isn’t the highest, so for low-drain uses where you want the longest life, you may want to look elsewhere.
These are some of the cheapest AAA batteries available, yet they returned the best performance with the highest overall capacity in my initial drain test, and second overall for total capacity. Given that these batteries can cope well with all types of use, there’s little reason to look elsewhere, particularly as you can buy them in multiple pack sizes to suit your needs.
How we test

We use an Ansmann Energy XC 3000 to drain batteries, so that we can test capacity in mAh. After the first run, we allow the batteries to cool and then retest to give us a second reading.
We measure the initial voltage of the batteries, checking that the starting voltage is at least 1.5V.
Introduction: How to Check AA/AAA Alkaline Battery Using a Voltmeter
We all run into a situation when batteries in our remotes, toys, keyboards/mice run out. If we don’t know how to check a battery we might throw out a perfectly fine battery (especially when we have a pile of them somewhere in the drawer).
This electronics tip has to deal with checking common alkaline AA/AAA batteries or AA/AAA rechargeable batteries for proper voltage with a voltmeter.
Disclaimer : some people might say that a battery should always be tested under load but I have found that in most common household applications this is insignificant and will not change the results of the testing too much.
Things that you will need : Voltmeter Alkaline battery
Basic facts : The proper voltage for AA/AAA alkaline battery is 1.5V The proper voltage for AA/AAA NiCd/NiMh rechargeable battery is 1.25 Volts
To test the battery, turn on your voltmeter, put the voltmeter on DCV and make sure that it is far above the battery voltage, on most voltmeters there is a setting 20 in the DCV area, so switch your voltmeter to that setting.
With the battery in front of you, put the red probe to battery’s nipple and the black probe to the battery’s flat side (-). Notice the voltage reading on the voltmeter.
If the reading is more than 1.3V for alkaline battery (not rechargeable battery) then the battery still has some juice left in it, don’t throw it away. Otherwise, properly discard of the battery.
Tip : do not use old and new batteries in the same device at the same time. Try to use batteries that have same amount of energy stored in them.
Another tip: I sort my batteries according to Voltages, 1.35 Good, 1.2V-1.3V Ok (but almost out), 1V-1.2V Discard.

Today I had a major name-brand digital thermostat fail, driving my house temperature to 80° before the failure was caught, wasting a lot of expensive energy as well. The thermostat is battery powered, and when checking the two AA’s it uses, the voltage on each was 1.32 and 1.33V, respectively. in some cases, that voltage may be usable, but in this application it was insufficient to power the relay that shuts off the furnace. Just be very careful of your particular application.
Was you furnace stuck on when the cells failed?
This is not a totally foolproof way to check cells, and you are certainly right to advise folks to be thoughtful and prudent about where they put their faith. Obviously I haven’t personally examined your home climate control system, so I’d be a fool to spout off and tell you there’s been a mistake. But I have to say that something seems amiss here.
I don’t mean to insult your intelligence, and if you know your stuff and are certain about what happened, please forgive me. But in case you’re not too familiar with HVAC and are just guessing, I want to give you a heads-up that the problem could be something else and you may want to be on the lookout. Although it appeared a low battery was your problem, it could be that the fresh battery, (or the some aspect of the battery change) just masked or reset a different problem.
I am not an HVAC pro or guru; my observations are not definitive. Prelude over. There are two things that seem unusual to me, and here’s what I can tell you. Although electronic thermostats do (usually, anyway) rely on their own power source to run their internals (including a switch that determines whether the furnace will be told to run), the actual messenger that switches it on is typically a ~5V line which is supplied by a transformer in the furnace. The thermostat’s power just has to decide to close a little circuit on its board, which doesn’t usually take much juice. Granted, that doesn’t prove anything. The thing that bugs me more is thatit’s usually a closed circuit that turns a unit on. Lack of power should result in a unit that fails to turn on.
I won’t pretend that I can tell you what else could have been at fault for the stuck on condition, or even that I know for certain it wasn’t just as you said. I just wanted to help out by telling you that from here it looks like there might be another problem lurking. If you know something I don’t, I’d be happy to have you educate me.

What Is the Difference Between AA and AAA Batteries?

Final Thoughts: Which Battery Type Should You Buy?
The battery type you should opt for more or less depends on which device you intend to use it with. You can usually tell the compatible battery type of a device by taking a look at its battery slots.
