How much battery capacity do you actually need?

Jackery Explorer 240 Portable Power Station review: A more affordable off-grid option

If you want a portable power station that gets you through an overnight trip or short power outage, the Explorer 240 is worth a look.

Best Today: Jackery Explorer 240 Portable Power Station

The last time I took a look at a Jackery Explorer power station, it was the Explorer 1000, which had a price that matched is capacity—1,000. This time around, I’m looking at the Jackery Explorer 240 that not only has a shrunken capacity, but a smaller price tag as well.

Both Jackery power stations feature a similar design, despite the Explorer 240’s smaller footprint and fewer ports. There’s an LCD screen centered above the bulk of the ports. The screen shows you the battery’s current charge level, via both a battery meter and as a percentage, while also showing the current outgoing and incoming wattage.

You’ll need to press the button next to the screen to turn it on, as you will need to do with any of the buttons next to each section of ports. For example, to the right of the screen is a 12V car charger adapter—in order to enable it, you’ll need to press the power button directly to its left.

The Explorer 240 features Jackery’s typical gray and orange theme, which looks great, and has a convenient handle for carrying the roughly 7-pound device.

The power station has a total capacity of 240Wh. As is the case with every power station I’ve reviewed, I put it through a series of tests to check output and charge rate.

Charging time for the Explorer 240 via the included power adapter took 7 hours and 28 minutes, while it actually charged faster via a solar panel, coming in at around five hours.

Powering a 4W desk lamp, the Explorer 240 lasted 35 hours and 43 minutes. That’s longer than the higher-capacity Ego Nexus power station.

The final test required me to connect a PortaPow power monitor and DROK load tester connected to a USB port, and record its output. Here’s where things got confusing. The first test result showed a total output of 274.819Wh—or nearly 35Wh more than the total capacity of the station. A second test showed 239.840Wh of output, which is nearly 100 percent of the station’s capacity. To be more specific, it’s an efficiency rating of 99.52 percent. The average of all the power stations I’ve reviewed is 89.29 percent, with the closest to the Explorer 240’s results being the Aukey PowerTitan 300 at 94.44 percent.

Using an iPhone 8 for testing, we find USB PD phones will fast charge over the USB-C port. iPhones will need to use a USB-C to Lightning cable, not included. Android phones can use the included USB-C to USB-C cable.

Using a Moto G6 for testing, we only see regular charging rates. Quick Charge is not supported, so there is no fast charging available. Still, 10W is a decent charge rate.

But I could not get a positive result during testing. It would recharge the Switch while docked, but video output was disabled.

USB-C Laptops

Using a 13-inch MacBook Pro for testing, we can draw up to 58W from its USB-C port. Expected after accounting for efficiency loss. It will also provide for full power draw if you connect your laptop’s wall charger to the AC outlet.

Different model laptops have differing power demands. But in general, a 60W USB-C PD output can support up to 13-inch/14-inch laptops under any condition. It can also support a 15-inch laptop under light use. Or charge it while sleeping.

My primary USB-C sniffer (testing device) would not operate properly while having it between the NOVOO’s USB-C port and my MacBook Pro. A second, more simple tester worked and is shown below.

Charging Several Devices At Once

You can connect up to four devices for power at once. But the max total output you can receive will depend on which outlets you use. And you can’t use the AC and DC outlets together.

AC Outlet

The AC (wall) outlet offers the most power itself but significantly limits other ports.

The USB-C port loses power delivery (PD) status, meaning it won’t fast charge handheld devices. If using a single USB-A there’s no change. But if using two or three, there is less power to be shared.

You can charge a laptop and two phones at the same time. The laptop will charge as fast as possible, while the phones charge more slowly. But total time probably beats charging then one at a time.

DC Outlet

The DC (car) outlet does not interfere with the USB ports but does require you to use a car charger over a wall charger.

Using a car charger over a wall charger when possible keeps fast charging enabled on the USB-C port. You can also charge two devices on the USB-A ports with no time lost.

Safely Using the AC Outlet

Unlike a wall outlet in your home, you will want to verify your device will be compatible with the NOVOO 230Wh Portable Power Station before plugging it in. The power station has more limited power output than a wall outlet. Which in turn limits what can safely power up. Failure to check beforehand can damage the power station.

200W

The 200W output limit over the AC outlet is the limiting factor for what devices can and cannot be powered up. It will support any handheld device, any laptop, a small cooling fan, most electric guitars, etc. It will not power a hairdryer or most kitchen appliances (big or small).

If your device has a wall wart plug, you can look at the printed text to see if its wattage is listed. Anything 200W or less is good to go. Otherwise, refer to the device’s manual or official web listing.

100-110V

I’m reviewing the US model, which has a 100-110V limit on the AC outlet. The Japanese model also supports 100-110V. The EU and UK models support 230V. Those voltages are the norm in those regions. So with the US model, I am safe (as far as the voltage is concerned) to plug in any device made for US power.

You can double-check the voltage range of your device, like how you checked the wattage. With a wall wart, there is printed text which will show the voltage range. Anything including 100-110V (for the US) is good to go. Otherwise, refer to the device’s manual or official web listing.

Recharging the Power Station

There are three power input options for recharging the NOVOO 230Wh Portable Power Station. The included AC power adapter, a USB-C PD charger, or a DC (car socket) compatible charger.

The included AC power adapter should be your go-to recharging option for the power bank. It is a dedicated solution provided by NOVOO. I would use it at home, but less for travel.

Any USB-C PD charger can connect to the USB-C port (don’t press the button) and recharge the power station. Ideally, you want a 60W or better USB-C PD charger to maximize recharge time. The included USB-C to USB-C cable works well with this option. A USB-C PD charger is a better travel companion for the power station. You can use one USB-C PD charger for it and your other devices. Most USB-C PD chargers will also travel better than the included AC power adapter.

The DC input option is for charging through your car or a solar charger. If outdoors, the power station can capture and store solar power to use later. You’ll want to use 12-24V solar panels with a DC output. You’ll also need to provide your compatible cables.

You cannot recharge using more than one input source. When using the included AC power adapter, a USB-C connection would not register.

Summary

The differences between a power bank and a power station come down to capacity and outlet. A power bank is ideal for power outages and weekend camping trips with only a smartphone. A power station provides more power through disaster-related outages and longer camping trips. It works with a lot more devices than those powered through USB.

Be sure you understand the multi-device limitations, especially the lack of simultaneous AC and DC output. The AC output is locked to a specific region, making it incompatible with wall chargers from most other parts of the world.

For myself, I like this unit as an emergency power source. Most often used for power outages. A regular power bank would work in most cases, but this is good for longer durations. It has none of the downsides of a generator and more than enough output to keep your lines of communication open.

When Joni Mitchell sang ‘You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone’ in her iconic song Big Yellow Taxi, she could have been singing about shore power. For as every yacht owner without an onboard generator discovers, the 240V AC mains supply we take for granted ashore becomes a distant dream whenever you leave the marina. Without mains power to recharge laptops and run kettles, microwaves and the like, life becomes more restricted.

While some might view 240V at sea as something of a luxury – after all, plenty of us have got by without it up until now – anyone who has spent an extended time on the water, especially at anchor without the engines running, will know that DC battery power is very much a finite resource. Cabin and cockpit lights, fridges and fans, or firing up the heater for a chilly night onboard, all take a battery-draining toll.

While a fully plumbed-in auxiliary generator provides the solution for larger yachts, the same does not hold true for smaller craft where engine room space and finances are often at a premium. Here, owners seeking mains power have traditionally either carried a portable genset – usually a low powered, noisy, smelly petrol-fuelled unit – or have simply gone without.

But now there’s another way: the portable electric power station. These rechargeable lithium-ion battery packs with built-in 240V inverters are small enough to tuck away under a seat or in a locker but many of them are also powerful enough to run energy intensive items like electric kettles. They are much less cumbersome than a traditional genny as well as being silent and emission free – ideal for occasional overnights at anchor or weekending aboard. In the same way that electric outboards are nibbling away at the market share of petrol-powered ones, portable electric power stations are now creeping quietly into the boating world.

The capabilities of these upstart interlopers vary widely but, as a general guide, the more you pay, the more portable power you get to take away.

Jackery explorer 500 portable power station

Jackery’s Explorer 500 Power Station is a 518Wh unit with three 12V DC outputs, three USB sockets and a UK three-pin 240V plug socket. The AC power output is 500W continuous and 1,000W peak. Jackery describes its Explorer 500 as a versatile green solar generator. That’s because when used in conjunction with the firm’s SolarSaga 100W solar panel, the unit’s lithium-ion battery pack can be fully recharged in around 9.5 hours. In 2016 Jackery won a prestigious Red Dot award for the design of its products. One notable feature on the Explorer 500 is the large LCD display showing the input/output power at any given time together with the battery charge status.

PowerOak Portable Power station 1500Wh

The 1,500Wh of power stored by the PowerOak PS8 EB150 means it is capable of running a 1kW travel kettle (or any other 1kW appliance) for 90 minutes non-stop – which of course nobody does. Estimating the time taken to boil a typical two-cup travel kettle as two minutes suggests this stylish power station would serve up to 90 brews on a single charge. The unit delivers its power via one of the two UK three-pin 240V AC sockets on the back of the box. In addition, the unit has five USB ports, including one USB-C outlet. An LCD display shows charging power, AC and DC output power, AC and DC on/off status, and a battery status indicator.

EcoFlow River PRO

While the EcoFlow River PRO is supplied as a 720Wh unit with a 600W output capability, it has a neat trick up its sleeve – a second battery can be added to double the energy storage capacity to 1,440Wh. And if you need more output power, that’s not a problem either as the unit features what EcoFlow calls its X-boost mode.

This allows the River PRO to power devices up to 1,800W, which covers around 80% of kitchen appliances and DIY tools. Solar panel recharging times of as little as four hours are possible by using two EF 11W solar panels (sold separately), while the unit can be recharged from the mains from zero to 80% in just one hour, with a full charge achieved in 1.6 hours.

EcoFlow Delta

Packing a 1,260Wh punch, the EcoFlow Delta is a fully-featured portable power station with four three-pin 240V AC 1,800W (3,300W surge) sockets, six USB outlets (two USB-A, two fast charge and two USB-C) and a 13.6V car cigarette lighter-style socket. That means it is theoretically possible to run up to 11 appliances at once, although the power would quickly drain at that rate. The EcoFlow Delta can run a mains appliance such as a microwave for 1 to 1.8 hours or a TV for up to 16 hours. It will also power a coffee machine long enough to deliver between 50 and 60 cups. An additional bonus offered by the EcoFlow Delta is its solar panel/car cigarette lighter input which allows the unit to be recharged either by solar or car battery power.

Poweroak Portable Power Station 500Wh

This compact 500Wh Bluetti PS6S portable power station features two 240V outlets providing up to 300W of AC power, which makes it capable of running products such as a mini-fridge. There are five USB points, including a USB-C socket, two 12V 3A sockets and a 12V 9A cigarette lighter outlet. Poweroak says the onboard lithium-ion battery cell is good for more than 1,000 cycles, and an in-built multi-protection system guards against over-voltage, over-current, over-temperature and short circuit. Recharging takes 6 to 6.5 hours using the included AC adaptor/generator, or 6 to 7 hours using Poweroak’s SP120 120W solar panel (sold separately). Includes a 24-month warranty.

Festool SYS-PST 1500

The big daddy of our pick of portable power stations, the Festool SYS-PST 1500 delivers a mighty 2,990W of permanent power and up to 11,000W in a short-term burst. Despite this hefty performance the unit is not too heavy or large; it weighs 16.5kg and measures 396 x 296 x 187mm. A full recharge takes three hours, with a built-in Smart charging system protecting the battery cells while charging is under way. In addition to a single 240V UK three-pin outlet, the unit also provides 5-20V via a USB-C connection. Designed primarily for the construction industry, the SYS-PST 1500’s lithium-ion battery stores 1,500Wh of energy. This, Festool claims, is sufficient to run all the tools a builder typically uses for an entire working day – and as the average skipper is likely to demand much less power than a tradesman, it should run for considerably longer on a boat.
