How to Convert Volts to Watts (V to W)

Converting volts to watts is easy — you just need to know the current in amps. To convert volts to watts, simply multiply volts times amps.

Formula: watts = volts × amps

Abbreviated: W = V × A

Occasionally, you may also see watts abbreviated as P instead of W and amps abbreviated as I instead of A. The conversion formula remains the same.

Alternate abbreviation: P = V × I

Here’s a simple example illustrating how to convert volts to watts.

Let’s assume you have own the following solar panel that is rated at 18.6 volts and 5.38 amps.

To calculate the watts produced by the panel in full sun, you would multiply volts times amps.

18.6 volts × 5.38 amps = 100.07 watts

It turns out your panel is a 100 watt solar panel.

Why Convert Volts to Watts?

Knowing a devices wattage is necessary for estimating how much power it’s using at a given moment, as well as how much energy it consumes overall.

For example, let’s say you have this portable 12 volt fridge.

You look at its product specifications and see that it has a max current of 5 amps. To estimate its max power consumption in watts, you multiply its voltage by its amperage.

So, in this example, your 12 volt fridge uses a max of 60 watts.

It’s important to know that the current rating listed on a device is usually its max current rating. In other words, the device may not be always using that much current. Fridges, for instance, enter a cooling cycle when the internal temperature gets too high. During a cooling cycle, a fridge is using much more energy than when it’s simply insulating.

Knowing the wattage of your devices helps you do three main things when it comes to DIY solar power:

Sizing an Inverter

Inverters are rated in watts. If you know the wattage of all your devices, you can sum them together to get your system’s total power draw. This is the total watts being used if all your devices were running at peak power simultaneously.

For instance, let’s say you plan to run a 200 watt fridge and a 75 watt fan off your inverter. You’d find your system’s max power draw by summing the wattage of these two devices.

Your inverter needs to have a watt rating higher than this total. So a 250 watt inverter would be insufficient, but a 500 watt inverter would work.

Estimating Energy Usage

Power is rated in watts, but energy is rated in watt hours or kilowatt hours. To estimate energy usage of your house or DIY electrical system, you need to convert watts to watt hours (or watts to kilowatt hours).

To do so, you need to know the wattage of all your devices as well as how many hours per day each one will run on average.

If you have a 75 watt TV that runs for 2 hours each day, for instance, you can estimate its watt hours (Wh) by multiplying watts by hours.

Each day, your TV uses about 150 watt hours of energy.

Sizing a Battery Bank

The amount of energy a battery stores can also be expressed in watt hours or kilowatt hours. (Though often it is expressed in amp hours, which must be converted to watt hours or kilowatt hours.) So, if you know your estimated energy usage, you can use that number to size your battery bank.

For example, let’s say you’re designing a small off-grid solar power system. All together, you expect your devices to consume 200 watt hours per day. You want your battery to last for up to 3 days without recharging, so you could size your battery bank by multiplying the two numbers together to get the total energy usage of your system over the course of 3 days.

200 Wh/day × 3 days = 600 Wh

In this simplified example, your battery bank needs to have a capacity of at least 600 watt hours to meet your energy requirements.

How to Convert Watts to Volts (W to V)

To convert watts to volts, divide watts by amps.

Formula: volts = watts ÷ amps

Abbreviated: V = W ÷ A

Alternate abbreviation: V = P ÷ I

For example, let’s say you have a 300 watt solar panel that is also rated at 12.5 amps. You want the panel’s voltage. Simply divide watts by amps to get volts.

300 watts ÷ 12.5 amps = 24 volts

Turns out your panel is a 24 volt solar panel.

How to Convert Amps to Watts (A to W)

To convert amps to watts, multiply amps times volts.

Formula: watts = amps × volts

Abbreviated: W = A × V

Alternate abbreviation: P = I × V

Let’s say you have a portable travel oven you want to use while on a road trip in your campervan. The oven is rated at 12 volts and 10.8 amps.

You calculate the maximum watts used by the oven by multiplying amps times volts.

10.8 amps × 12 volts = 129.6 watts

reviews for 64000mAh Power Bank 240V

These are good products as I use for school purposes in helping my year 12 to charge their computers as they are not allowed to charge at school. Your service and prompt delivery and communication is why I buy and continually recommend.

Great product. Charges MacBook Pro effectively using the adaptor. Doesn’t charge using the USB-C though. Still a good product. you can probably get four full charges for a MacBook Pro 2020 13.

A great little unit that is helping power my work from my off-grid shack. Really effective and easy to use.

Sturdy construction and it holds its charge very effectively. A bit heavy to carry in a backpack for daily commuter backup but for weekends and interstate travel etc, its perfect.

To the team at auspower, A simple review of the 64000mAh power bank, since I’ve received a very cool and heavy power bank, I’ve been off all over Melbourne, with my laptop. Which is a HP, and my phone which is a Oppo, after charging and heading out every day as a retired teacher does. I’ve found the Power bank is brilliant, must say that, I don’t think I’ve had this much power on the run, also I’ve told friends and they can’t wait to try it out, so yes it can charge 5phones and a laptop and 20%left over, which is fantastic, I have recommended auspower, and my friends have checked out the website, I’m impressed big time, for I’ve never used my laptop in the Alexander gardens. than enough power to satisfy anyone’s needs, all it needs is a solar panel with a C connector for charging while I’m off camping ️, now that would make my day. Thankyou to all who work at auspower, I couldn’t be more happier with the peace of mind knowing that I’ll not run out of power while wandering around Melbourne or Victoria. Thankyou! Andrew of sunshine

Working from home here. Recent 6hr blackout made us realise that backup energy is so important. Having this power bank is the bare minimum to power laptop, monitor and phone for internet connectivity. Will transition to a generator when we build.

Fantastic bank if your looking for ultimate power and have a lot of devices needing juice! It’s not too large to take on the road trips or those weeks away camping. Powers almost anything with a plug. Absolutely love it and it’s versatility. Guys at Aus powerbanks were awesome too and got it to me in a timely manner, thanks again!

Prompt service and delivery, the battery pack works well with my 2018 MacBook Pro.

Bought a power bank for my cpap machine works as perfectly. Lasted 2 nights with 50% still remaining

Great product comes as described well packaged fast post. Very pleased with the customer experience will buy from you again sometime.

Rare reviewer here, sufficiently motivated by this product and business to submit. I have been battling to find a well designed and constructed battery case for my phone since my. read more first “mophie” case in 2018. Mophies reduction in design and quality, combined with savage import restrictions on these products here in Aust for difficult to understand reasons, had me searching for an alternative. I found auspower banks, submitted a query about whether corded headphones were supported through their device and received a prompt reply that they cannot guarantee this for non Apple branded. I ordered one anyway (theyre well priced), and it did work. The case is so nicely appointed and functional that other members of my family expressed jealousy over the condition of my phone, and not needing to battle over the charger every night, hence I bought 2 more as christmas presents. My lover had some technical issues with hers, which may or not be related to the design weak point (the lightning connector) on initial installation, but with quick replies to my query they popped a replacement in the mail within days. I hope this company hangs around for years because no phone is complete without one of their cases. Lovely stuff.

Good support on phone and email, product does as provided, used my airmini for weekend camping including charging phone

Prompt reply to questions and order was filled as expected Would recommend

Best Value Power Bank: Anker 523 PowerCore Slim 10K PD

Anker is a leader in the portable battery market and makes about a million different models, but the 523 PowerCore Slim 10K PD is our value pick for most people. The 10,000mAh capacity and 20W fast charging is a winning combination: it’ll fully charge a typical smartphone at least 1.5 times, and in most cases, do it at the maximum possible speed.

At just over half an inch thick and barely seven ounces, this power bank is small enough to fit in a jacket. and deserves its “slim” name. Like most portable batteries, it’ll stand up to general wear and tear, but isn’t water-resistant, so protect it like you would most other battery-powered devices. It comes with a soft case for that purpose.

The 10K PD can charge two devices at once, via either the USB C PD or USB-A port, and you get a cable for each in the box. Note that the other end is USB C in both cases: that’s ideal for most devices other than an iPhone. You’ll need to use your existing Lightning cable for that, or buy a spare.

If your phone supports Power Delivery (most do), you’ll get up to 20W out of the USB C port. That’s enough to charge most phones and tablets at full speed, and the rest at something close to it. You’ll only get 12W out of the USB-A port: that’s not terrible, but charging will take a bit longer.

The maximum shared output is 18W, though, so if you want your device to charge as fast as possible, don’t plug something else in at the same time. The charger also supports trickle-charging mode, for low-power devices like smartwatches.

Charging the power bank itself is handled from the USB C port, and with a 20W wall charger, you’ll go from empty to full in about five hours. That’s faster than much of the competition, and extremely useful when you’re short on time. Travelers, especially, will benefit greatly.

The PowerCore Slim 10K comes in any color as long as its black or white, and is covered by Anker’s standard 18-month limited warranty. For us, it’s simply a useful and flexible power bank from a leading manufacturer that’s well-priced for what it offers.

  • 1.5-2 full charges of most phones
  • Can fast charge almost all smartphones and tablets
  • Fully charges from wall outlet in about five hours
  • Simultaneous charging of two devices
  • 18 month warranty

Best Laptop Power Bank: Anker PowerCore 26800

If you’re looking to charge laptops and other large electronic devices, standard power banks won’t cut it. You’ll need something more substantial, like the Anker PowerCore. This unit has a 26,800mAh capacity and up to 45W output, enough power to fully charge a 13” Dell XPS or a 13” MacBook Pro.

That capacity also happens to be just under the legal limit for airplane use, so this is among the best TSA-approved options, and one of the best power banks for travel.

This unique laptop power bank has dual output ports: a 45W USB C port for modern laptops, and 2x 15W USB-A ports for smaller electronic devices. The laptop output is substantial enough to charge most laptops while using them, which isn’t always the case with competing models.

Because the laptop port is USB C, this works best for newer laptops with USB C charging. It doesn’t have a standard AC outlet that will support older laptops that charge via a power brick: if that’s something you’re after, take a look at the RavPower PD Pioneer below.

This unit comes with a 60W wall charger, meaning that despite its huge capacity, it takes under 3.5 hours to fully charge itself from empty. Combine that with USB C Power Delivery (PD) support for speedy device charging, and you’ve got arguably the best fast charging power bank on the market.

Note that Anker has recently released an updated version, the 747 PowerCore 26K. It adds a second USB C port and ramps up the maximum output to 87W, meaning it can charge almost any laptop at full speed, but leaves everything else much the same. It’s also usually more expensive.

If you need that extra charging power or additional port, grab the newer version, otherwise save a bit of cash with the older model.

  • Huge capacity
  • Fully charge a 13-inch MacBook Pro or Dell XPS
  • USB C PD (45W) and dual USB-A (15W) ports
  • Comes with 60W wall charger

Best Power Bank with AC Outlet: RavPower PD Pioneer

If you have an older laptop that needs to charge via an AC outlet, or just want a versatile charger that can power almost anything, the RavPower PD Pioneer is a great option.

This compact power bank is one of few on the market that actually has a built-in AC outlet, which can put out a sustained 80W of power. It also has USB-A (18W) and USB C (30W) ports, making it a versatile option for charging most devices.

With a capacity of 20,000mAh, this power bank will give close to one full charge of most 13″ laptops. As the name suggests, it also has USB PD (Power Delivery) technology, a fast-charging feature that can deliver a surprising amount of power, surprisingly quickly. Depending on the device, PD can cut recharge time by up to 60%.

At less than 1.5 pounds, it’s relatively lightweight by the standards of this type of power bank, and can itself be fully charged from a high-speed wall charger in under three hours.

The main downside is the cooling fan. While it helps to keep the device at a reasonable temperature, it can be a bit noisy. For more information, check out our full review of this unit. We also covered several other portable laptop chargers for a range of different requirements.

  • Relatively compact
  • Includes AC outlet to charge almost anything, including older laptops
  • Useful capacity
  • Versatile charging via AC, USB C, and USB-A

Best Wireless Power Bank: Anker Wireless PowerCore III

Another day, another excellent Anker power bank, but this time it’s wireless.

The 10,000mAh Anker Wireless PowerCore III is our pick for the best wireless power bank. If your phone supports it, you can charge wirelessly via the charging pad at up 10W. Using the Qi standard, it’s widely compatible with recent iPhones, many Android smartphones, and other devices.

If your device doesn’t support wireless charging, never fear: both the USB C and USB-A ports provide a backup option. You’ll get up to 18W output from the USB C port, so it’s also a way of ensuring faster charging even if your device does have Qi support.

That USB C port is also how you charge the power bank itself, again at up to 18W if you’ve got an appropriate wall charger. Unfortunately Anker doesn’t provide one in the box, so you’ll need to use one you already own or buy an appropriate model. You can also charge from a laptop in a pinch.

A particularly useful feature is pass-through charging, where the power bank can charge devices while it itself is charging. This basically means that you can use the PowerCore in place of a standard Qi charging dock, and simply leave it plugged in all the time.

  • Qi charging
  • Pass-through charging: can charge device and power bank simultaneously
  • 2 USB ports for charging other devices, at up to 18W

Best Small Power Bank: JSAUX Portable Phone Charger

The JSAUX mini portable charger is one of the best small power banks on the market. Weighing just 6.3 ounces, the 10,000mAh capacity is enough for around two full phone charges for most smartphones.

Unlike most other small power banks, it offers both USB C and USB A charging ports. Even more unusually, they’re both able to fast-charge your device: you’ll get up to 18W from the USB-A port, and up to 20W out of the USB C PD port.

Usefully, there’s also a trickle-charge mode, for low-power devices like wireless earbuds and smartwatches. Holding down the power button for three seconds enables that mode.

Charging the power bank itself is done via USB C, and if you use a 20W wall charger, it’ll happen in under three hours. Unusually, it has pass-through charging as well, letting you power up one of your devices from the USB-A port while charging the power bank itself from the USB C port.

As small and lightweight as it is, the power bank is an inch thick. That’s totally fine if it’s sitting in your purse or day bag, but feels a little large when it’s in your

If you’re looking to go even smaller, consider the lipstick-shaped Anker PowerCore 5000 instead. You’ll lose many of the features of the JBAUX, but it weighs a mere 4.8oz, yet still has enough juice for about one full phone charge.

  • Compact, portable design
  • USB C PD and USB-A ports
  • 10000mAh capacity
