Otterbox 20,000 mAh Fast Charge Power Bank

A good battery pack is essential these days. Everything from phones to gps to headlamps to cameras and radios are now recharged by USB.

Otterbox have been in the phone accessory game a long time make some of the toughest cases on the planet. If you need a supertough, waterproof case for your phone, you get an Otterbox case.

In 2017 they used their plastic expertise to make some of the nicest backpack and hard-sided coolers you can buy. The hard coolers rival Yeti with their ice-keeping and production quality.

They’ve expanded their product line again to electric phone accessories with cords and battery packs. They now have 10,000, 15,000 and 20,000 mAh battery banks. The Fast Charge Qi Wireless Power Bank comes in 10k and 15k mAh sizes with a Qi wireless charging pad on top.

This review is about the 20,000 mAh Fast Charge Power Bank without the Qi charging pad.

The Fast Charge Power Bank has three different sizes: 10,000, 15,000 and 20,000 mAh. The iPhone 12 has a 3,687 mAh battery in it so you’ll get more than 5 charges with 20k mAh.

It’s not just for phones though, it can be used to charge anything that can be charged by 18W USB. It won’t charge MacBook Pro computers but it works well for anything smaller like tablets, phones, cameras and drones. With new drones like the DJI Mavic Mini 2 coming with USB charging built in or portable charging stations, it’s easy to charge on the move.

It takes about 4 hours to fully charge. Some chargers are faster than others. Directly connected to the wall with a fast charger will charge the fastest. Just plugged into a computer will take longer.

The 4 LED lights indicate how charged it is. One click and it shows you the lights and the current charge level.

It has 2 ports, 1 USB-C and 1 USB-A port. Both can charge at 18 watts output.

What I like

Feels and looks good

The power bank is the best looking power bank I’ve seen. Most are simple plastic or are made with slippery materials with no attention to the details. The faux-leather material on the Otterbox feels amazing and is easier to hang on to, and won’t slide around much on a dash.

Most power banks are fragile electrics. One drop and it’s toast. Otterbox builds their products tough. I’ve already dropped a few times accidentally and it looks brand new and works great. This makes it a bit heavier than other power banks but it will likely last longer being chunked in a backpack.

18 watts with Power Delivery output

Most small chargers only do 5 to 10 watts which doesn’t charge bigger devices like some cameras and tablets. 18 watts does a good job with all the smaller devices until you get to the larger laptops.

What I don’t like

Only 18W output

18W charging can power plenty of smaller devices but it’s not not quite enough for bigger laptops. I tested the Otterbox a 15′ MacBook Pro and while it did help power the laptop, it wasn’t gaining any ground. It might be able to increase the battery while asleep but in use it just slowed the decrease.

Can’t fast charge with both ports

The fast charge only works with one thing plugged in. It would be nice to see both ports fast charge. 1 is still great though but you just have to be aware that it won’t fast charge 2 phones at the same time.

Sturdy case withstands small drops no problem

Who is this good for?

Folks on the go a lot who need a bigger power bank. If you are constantly using a small laptop, tablet or camera and running out of juice, this is a great power bank to get. The 18W charge keeps up with tablets and bigger cameras that demand more power.

Being on the larger and heavier side, you probably won’t take it ultralight backpacking but with everything USB powered these days, the 10k version is smaller and lighter and could easily fit into your backpack to help charge your headlamp, GPS, and phone on the trail.

Are 20000mAh power banks allowed on flights?

As you may already know, airlines enforce a strict 100Wh limit on flights. However, it’s not always clear how much that means in mAh, since this is the measure of capacity that most people are familiar with. Is a 2000mAh power bank over or under the 100Wh limit?

A 20000mAh capacity translates to 74Wh, falling below the 100Wh limit. This means you can safely take any 20000mAh power bank on flights. Just be sure to have them in your carry-on luggage and not in your checked-in one.

To prevent any issues from arising at the airport, you should make sure that the Wh or the mAh capacity is clearly displayed on the power bank. If the capacity is not visible on the product, you may have issues in some airports as they won’t be able to tell the exact capacity of your device. This is especially true when traveling internationally, where rules may be more strict.

How many 20000mAh power banks can you take on a flight?

TSA does not specify the maximum amount that you can take on board when it comes to batteries that are under 100Wh. In the same way, they do not specify a maximum limit for mobile phones or laptops. However, we advise you not to go overboard and bring a lot of them with you. You might be pushing your luck that way. But 2-3 20000mAh power banks should go through security without an issue.

How to determine the Wh value of any power bank and/or battery

Since the majority of power banks have their capacity in mAh instead of Wh, this might be a bit confusing at first. But with a simple conversion, you can easily see what the Wh capacity of your portable charger is.

To do this, multiply the mAh by the battery’s nominal voltage (usually 3.7V) and divide it by 1000. For example, 20000mAh 3.7V/1,000 = 74Wh. Alternatively, you can use our handy mAh to Wh calculator.

What is the maximum mAh allowed on a plane?

The maximum battery capacity you’re allowed to bring on a plane is 100Wh or around 27000mAh. Even though they come in a wide range of voltages and ratings, an average 3.7V power bank would have to be approximately 27000mAh before going over the 100Wh limit. As long as it displays “3.6V” or “3.7V” with a number close to 27000mAh, chances are that it’s ok to take on a flight.

However, power banks between 100Wh and 160Wh can still be taken aboard a plane with you, but they will need special airline approval. If you have one with a large capacity, you should find out how many Wh it has. Then you will need to contact the airline at least 72 hours prior to your flight to inform them your device is over 100Wh. As long as it’s below 160Wh, the airline will let you through security. If you need more power, you can carry up to two extra batteries in carry-on bags as long as they don’t exceed 160Wh each.

Anything over 160Wh would cause issues solely because it’s classified as dangerous cargo and they will require special permissions to take aboard a plane. Just for reference, a 160Wh power bank is approximately 44000mAh at 3.6V.

There is also a rule that you are required to follow when it comes to boarding a flight with a power bank. Since power banks contain a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, it needs to be stored in your carry-on bag. This is because it’s a lot safer to keep them in an area where they can be monitored. Keeping it in the cargo hold is more dangerous than storing it in the cabin because it’s harder to notice if it catches fire. This is especially true for large-capacity power banks rated 20000mAh or higher since they could be more explosive than the others with a lower rating.

Accidentally taking a large capacity power bank on a flight or putting it in checked luggage isn’t very likely to cause a huge problem. Most likely you will be required to take it out from your baggage, but in some cases, your device may be confiscated by the airport security.

All-in-all 20000mAh power banks are completely fine to take on a plane. In fact, you can have two 2000mAh power banks with you on any given flight without any issue. Just make sure that the capacity is clearly printed on one of the sides of the device, especially if traveling internationally.

How to Use a Power Bank: Here’s Everything You Need to Know

You know that anxious feeling when the “low battery” notification pops up on your screen? There’s something about it that can send your mind into a tailspin. Even worse, sometimes you don’t have your charger, and you’re nowhere near an outlet! Luckily, there’s a handy tool out there to keep you fully charged: the power bank. If you’re looking to learn the basics of power banks, you’ve come to the right place. Let’s get right into it!

How to Charge a Power Bank Top

Charging a power bank is pretty straightforward, especially since most of them come with instruction manuals. However, if yours didn’t come with one, you can still charge it without breaking a sweat!

Here is the best way to charge a power bank:

  • Attach the cable to the power bank.
  • Connect the other side of the cable to your power source.
  • Your power bank should begin charging.
  • Once charged, unplug the power bank from the wall and your phone.
  • Step 1: Attach the Cable Attach the cable that came with your power bank to the device itself. Most of the time, the port that connects to your power bank is a micro USB.
  • Step 2: Plug Into Power Source Next, plug in the other side of the cable (usually a standard USB) into your wall plug or your computer. Some wall outlets even have USB ports built in, so if you have one of those nearby, you won’t need a wall adapter!
  • Step 3: Start Charging Your power bank should start charging. If it has an indicator light, keep a close eye on it. Once it is fully charged, all the indicator lights will illuminate.
  • Step 4: Unplug the Charger Unplug the charger from the wall or your computer once all indicator lights are illuminated.

How Often Should You Charge a Power Bank? Top

A general rule of thumb is that the more you charge your power bank, the shorter the lifespan of the device. You should charge your power bank only as often as is necessary. If you use your power bank sparingly, at least charge it once every 3 months to keep the battery active.

Can I Use My Phone While Charging? Top

There shouldn’t be any harm in using your cell phone while it is charging. You may notice your phone getting a bit warm, but this is expected. It’s worth noting, however, that using your phone while it is charging may not result in a 100% charged battery since you are actively using the power source before the charge is complete. If you want your cell phone to be fully charged, it’s best to leave it alone while it powers up!

Why Do Some Power Banks Take Longer to Charge? Top

Some power banks take longer to charge because larger batteries have a bigger capacity to store energy. For example, a high capacity power bank with 20,000 mAh can take up to 40 hours to charge fully. Smaller power banks with 4,000 mAh may only take a couple hours to charge.

Think of it like a shot glass versus a tall drinking glass. It’s going to take a lot longer for a drinking glass to fill with water than it will for the shot glass!

How Long Should You Charge a Power Bank? Top

You should only charge your power bank for the amount of time it takes for it to get a full battery. Once the device is fully charged, you should unplug it from the power source. You can check the user manual to find out how your power bank indicates it has been fully charged, but most of them have some sort of light that shows the amount of power left in the battery.

fast, charging, power, bank

The amount of time it takes for a power bank to reach its full capacity varies depending on the type. A heavy-duty power bank will take longer to charge than a smaller one. Generally speaking, it takes between 1 to 2 hours for a power bank to become fully charged!

Did You Know?

There are super powerful power banks on the market that allow you to power larger devices like televisions, curling irons, and oscillating fans!

Can I Charge My Power Bank Overnight? Top

You should avoid charging your power bank overnight whenever possible. It is unlikely to cause significant damage, but there is still a chance it could reduce the lifespan of your battery over time.

For lower-quality power banks, leaving your power bank plugged in after it is fully charged can cause overheating, especially if they are left to charge in direct sunlight. The safest option is to always unplug your power bank once it has reached full capacity!

How Can You Make Your Phone Charge Faster? Top

If you ever find yourself in need of a quick battery charge for your smartphone, there are a few steps you can take to make your phone charge faster. Always make sure your charging cables are plugged all the way in and your power bank has enough power to charge your phone.

Here are some tips to make your phone charge faster:

  • Turn on airplane mode
  • Don’t use your phone while charging
  • Turn your phone off
  • Use a high-capacity power bank
  • Don’t use a wireless charger

Turn on Airplane Mode

Putting your phone on airplane mode is a surefire way to reduce charging time. This is because the setting turns off your phone’s Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular capabilities, which are all settings that drain your power! When your device is on airplane mode, it’s consuming less power, which makes for a quicker charge.

Don’t Use Your Phone While Charging

Using your phone while it’s charging is going to increase the amount of time it takes for your battery to be fully powered. It may be difficult to resist the urge to send that text message or check Instagram, but it’s worth the sacrifice if you want your phone to be fully charged!

Turn Your Phone Off

This strategy works similar to airplane mode because it turns off all the components in your phone that would otherwise be using your battery. When your phone is powered off, it’s able to reach a full charge much faster. Keeping your phone on while it’s charging is like trying to sleep while you’re hungry or thirsty—it’s going to be much more difficult!

Use a High-Capacity Power Bank

Some power banks are more powerful than others. The heavy-duty ones are going to make your phone charge much faster than the smaller ones! However, not all phones can handle a high-powered portable charger. It’s best to contact the manufacturer of your cell phone to see what they recommend. Charging your battery with too much power is never a good idea!

Don’t Use a Wireless Charger

Wireless chargers are a genius invention, but they’re not the best option if your goal is to charge your phone quickly. Plugging your phone in directly to a power bank or outlet is the quickest way to bring it back to life because it’s directly connected to the power source!

How Long Do Power Banks Last? Top

The amount of time a power bank lasts varies from product to product, but on average, a power bank should last at least a couple hundred charging cycles.

If you use your power bank frequently, you’re going to consume more charging cycles than someone who only uses their power bank occasionally. There are more durable power banks out there than can last upwards of 1,000 charging cycles, but most of the smaller ones on the market have a lifespan of 200 or 300 cycles. The age of the power bank also has a significant impact on how long it lasts. As the batteries inside of the device age, they become less effective.

How to Store a Power Bank Top

Power banks should always be stored in a cool location that isn’t exposed to direct sunlight, such as a desk drawer. According to Battery University, batteries achieve optimum service life if used at 68 degrees Fahrenheit, or slightly below that temperature.

If you store your power bank in direct sunlight or a warm environment like the glove box in your car, it won’t last as long. It’s also best to store your power bank in a pouch or case when not in use. This helps protect the charging ports so they do not accumulate dust or debris!

Should You Buy a Power Bank? Top

If you’re always on the go or find yourself with a low battery, you should buy a power bank! They come in handy during vacations, trade shows, plane rides, or any time you are using your phone away from an outlet. The type of power bank you’ll need depends on your lifestyle and how many devices you need to charge.

There’s no reason to not invest in a power bank. They’re like an extra insurance policy for your phone’s battery! Having one with you just in case is always a good idea.

The Bottom Line

Power banks make our lives a bit easier by ensuring we never run out of juice. By using them properly, you’re not only protecting the power bank, but you’re also getting the most out of your investment! A properly cared-for power bank will get you through those long meetings and plane rides. Just think of all the adventures you’ll go on while still having peace of mind!
