But that means I need to maintain that device, which is why a portable power bank comes with me on nearly every trip. Over the past month, I’ve tested a dozen of the top rated power banks, and from that initial pool, I’ve narrowed it down to the six best power banks.
It doesn’t matter if I’m spending time outdoors or traveling, I’ll need to recharge something, and will inevitably use a power bank. My picks for the best power banks have been used while in the outdoors as well as for everyday use and holiday travel. They’ve juiced up headlamps, GoPros, my iPhone, and even other power banks. After all that field testing, here are my findings and recommendations for the best power banks.

How I Tested the Power Banks
I tested the power banks in three ways: First, I timed how long it takes them to fully charge and how many times they fully charged my iPhone 11 Max. Then over a one-month period I carried these portable chargers during outdoor activities in several states, on long road trips, and a fishing trip in North Carolina. During that month I subjected them to heat, cold, and water to test their durability. Finally, I weighed and measured each power bank to provide you with accurate specs.
Here are the attributes I used to evaluate the power banks:

The Anker PowerCore went through three key tests: a timed charge, testing how many times it would charge my iPhone 11 Pro Max, and using the power bank in the field. One of my favorite features of this power bank is how fast it charges. In a few hours, you can bring it from dead to fully juiced and ready to hit the field. It’s fast charging ability also makes it an excellent candidate to pair with a solar panel like the BigBlue 24 watt.
In my testing, the Anker PowerCore charged my phone twice. That’s two times with the phone on and in use. So, if you keep your phone off while it’s charging, you can expect the power bank to last longer—Anker rates it at two-and-a-quarter iPhone 12 charges. I most often use this charger when I’m going to be out all day and will need to charge my phone once, along with another device like a GoPro. It would also be ideal for a two-to.three day camping trip where you need to charge your phone twice.

There are a lot of portable solar chargers on the market, and they range in price as much as they do in effectiveness. The BigBlue is the best solar power charger that actually works and it’s affordable. You have to manage your expectations when it comes to these small solar panels and while three hours to bring a phone to full charge seems like a lot, I think it’s pretty impressive.
Here’s the context of my testing. I tested this solar panel in the fall when the sun sits low in the sky. The first hour of the charge the panel received partial sun. I managed the position of the panel throughout the day to keep it aligned with the sun.
The first test was to see how long it took to charge a Goal Zero Flip 12, which is good for one full phone charge. That test took three hours, which is how long it takes to charge the Flip 12 when plugged into the wall. The next test was to see how long it takes to charge my pick for the best power bank, the PowerCore 10,000 mAh. After six hours in the sun the power bank was at full power.
When you’re in the field, you probably don’t have time to sit around for six hours waiting for a power bank to charge. But, that’s not the best way to use this charger. In my opinion, using the solar panel to maintain battery life rather than fully charge a device is the best use. For example, if you are glassing in the morning, you can roll out your solar charger and plug in a device. Let’s say you stay put for just an hour, that’s enough time to charge a phone 30 percent. By charging your devices a little at a time throughout your time in the field you can make your powerbank or batteries last much longer.

I used the Anker Solar on a few upland bird hunting trips and a trip chasing false albacore in North Carolina making this the best power bank for fishing. While chasing albies, we had one bad weather day with a lot of chop. If I wasn’t wearing a rain suit, I would have been drenched. The Anker Solar was subjected to the same salt spray and it handled it just fine. It also had plenty of power to keep my phone, and GoPros fully charged during the ten hours of fishing. After I got off the boat, I grabbed a quick dinner before heading out on kayaks for fishing dock lights at night. That few hours wasn’t enough time to get the Anker Solar back to even half charge, which is the main downside.
If you plan to use this charger for backpacking or hunting, the weight and bulk are something to consider. The Anker PowerCore 20,000 mAh is considerably lighter and smaller, but it lacks the solar charging and weather protection the Anker Solar offers. Personally, I’d rather take the PowerCore for those applications, and think the Solar shines for fishing applications.
One of the questions you probably have is: does the solar panel on this powerbank work? If you plan to use the solar panel to fully charge your power bank, you’ll be waiting a while. I tested the solar charging capabilities by placing the power bank in full sun for six hours and did not see a measurable difference in charge. However, I think if you keep this charger in the sun all day, the battery will last longer than if you didn’t have the solar panel. So, consider it more of a battery extender, rather than a charger like the BigBlue.

The power bank didn’t lose a bit of charge, which has been my experience with all my Anker power banks in cold weather. But, don’t buy this charger unless you have an iPhone, preferably a 12 variant, and a compatible magnetic case. If you don’t have a compatible magnetic case, you’ll have to remove your case to use the magnetic feature and you’ll be disappointed in the strength of the magnet.
But, if you do invest in a magnetic case, it’s a great wireless charger for outdoors use. Other wireless chargers aren’t practical for outdoor use because they need to be laid flat to maintain contact with your phone. But, the magnetic power bank from Anker snaps to your phone and stays connected even in a cargo or your best backpack. You get the benefit of not needing to bring a charging cable and a continuous charge while you use your phone. I find this charger is ideal for all day sits, or days when I’m running OnX continuously.
How to Choose a Power Bank
Power banks are a lot like other outdoor gear, there’s a trade off between features and weight. You can get more capability, but you’ll pay for it in size and weight. You’ll have to decide how much capability you need and how much weight you’re willing to carry.
Here are more things you’ll need to consider when buying a power bank or solar charger.
What is a mAh and how much do I need?
A spec you’ll often see is mAh, which stands for milliamps hour. The mAh spec is a measurement of power over time, the higher the mAh the more power the battery contains. To fully charge a phone you’ll need 3,000 to 5,000 mAh.
Watts
A watt is a measurement of rate of energy transfer. So, when shopping for portable solar chargers keep in mind that the more wattage the more power the panel can provide. I’d recommend at least a 24-watt solar charger.
Are solar chargers practical?
If you’re in an area where you can provide a solar charger full sun, and leave it all day to charge a power bank or device, they are practical. But, you can’t expect a solar charger that fits in your to work well because you need surface area to effectively charge.
I found small solar panels to work best for maintaining battery life, rather than being used to fully charge a device. The main issue is that portable solar panels are small, and can only gather so much electricity. What they can do is lengthen your phone or power bank’s life. When you stop to glass or cook lunch, lay out your panel and let it charge the device for a few hours. Even if it’s a few percent increase in battery life, it’s free energy and a few percent here and there can add up over a week’s trip. If you get an extra 25 percent out of our powerbank I count that as a win.
Solar panels are also bulky and heavy. For example, the BigBlue weighs 1.5 pounds, and the 20,000 mAh PowerCore weighs less than a pound. You can pack two 20,000 mAh charges that would charge a phone ten times total and weigh the same as a BigBlue.
Waterproof power banks
Why didn’t I include any waterproof power banks? The rugged power banks that are fully waterproof and shock resistant come at the penalty of being heavy and bulky for the amount of power they provide. I’d much rather drop my power bank in a dry bag than carry the extra weight of a waterproof power bank. It’s also worth pointing out that while your waterproof power bank might survive a submersion, your phone won’t.

The thing is that most probably you have more devices than just your iPhone – and that you would like to be able to charge them on the go, as well. Apple Watch, iPad, Bluetooth headphones, a digital camera?
Plus the cables with all possible plug configurations to make sure that any device can be charged. Looks like a lot of stuff to take, while the only thing you need is to emergency charge your iPad or iPhone once every few days.
The more devices you have, the bigger the power bank you would need. On the other hand, high-capacity battery packs are heavy and big. A big power bank capable of charging all your mobile Apple devices could weigh more than all these devices combined.

Here are the parameters to take into consideration when choosing a power bank:
▸ Capacity – measured in milliampere hours (mAh) – shows the power bank’s maximum charge that can be transferred by a steady current of one milliampere flowing for one hour. The bigger the capacity, the more times you will be able to charge your iPhone.
▸ Power output – measured in watts (W) – shows the power bank’s maximum rate of energy transfer. iPads need chargers with higher power output. So, even if the power adapter has a high capacity, it may not be able to charge the iPad if it has a low power output. Here is a list of original iPhone and iPad power adapters, which is a good power output reference when looking for compatible power banks.
▸ Power delivery – this is the USB port related specification showing how fast a specific port can be in charging the devices with greater power demand. Usually, the fastest power delivery is provided by USB-C ports.
▸ Output ports – the number and kind of ports used to charge connected devices. Please keep in mind that in some power banks USB-C ports work only one way – to charge the power bank itself. That’s why it’s important to double check if the USB-C port is “two-way,” ”in-out,” or “input-output.”
▸ Input ports – the number and kind of ports used to charge the power bank itself. Some ports in a single power bank can be used for both input and output – but some for input only. You should analyze which port serves which purpose if you want to avoid disappointment.
▸ Pass-through technology – if you find this phrase in the description, it means that the power bank is capable of charging the connected devices while it’s connected to the wall power socket.
Power bank flight information
Power banks use lithium-ion batteries which are liable to catch fire, therefore it is prohibited to put them in the check-in luggage (the luggage you leave at the airport to take to the cargo space of the plane).

Not sure how long you’re going to be away from a charger and need some extra juice? Here’s our selection of the top battery packs for any iPhone with a lightning cable.
The iPhone and iPad, Apple’s most portable computers, have progressed hugely since the original models were released in 2007 and 2010 respectively. Battery life is one area that’s seen a huge improvement, with the 3969mAh battery on the iPhone 11 Pro Max a far cry from the original’s 1400mAh cell.
Modern iPhones and iPads should easily last a full day of moderate usage, but what if you want more? What if you know you’ll be spending a long time away from the charger and will need some extra juice? A power bank or battery pack is the perfect solution in this scenario, offering multiple charges for your device in a relatively small package.
There’s a huge range of options out there, so we’ve picked out ten we think will serve you well.
EasyAcc 20000mAh
EasyAcc’s power bank provides excellent value for money, complete with a staggering 20000mAh capacity that should easily cover you for multiple days of battery life.
To put it into perspective, EasyAcc claims it can charge an iPhone 7 six times when full. If you leave the house and you’ll be away from a plug for a couple of days, it could be all you need. What’s more, it’s capable of charging up to four devices at once, and even comes with a little torch.
Once you finally run down the capacity, just plug it into the charger and it will be ready to go again in just 6 hours.
JBL Charge 4
You might think of portable speakers when you think of JBL, but how about one with a power bank built-in?
The Charge 4 includes a 7500mAh cell and Bluetooth speaker in one compact package. Its versatility makes it perfect for trips away, with the power bank able to charge most iPhones at least twice.
It also works well as a portable speaker, with Bluetooth connectivity and a bass radiator that gives it a nice, strong sound. There’s even a noise-cancelling microphone for taking phone calls.
The rubber casing of the Charge 4 provides good protection for bumps and drops when you’re in the great outdoors. It’s got IPX7 for water resistance, which means it can cope with being submerged in up to 1m of water – so it’s a good choice if you’re out in bad weather or splashing around on a beach.
You can link multiple Charge speakers together to really pump up the volume, and there’s a Social mode that lets you pair it with up to three Bluetooth phones or tablets all at once so that your friends can join in and play their own music too.
Despite its compact size, the Charge 4 manages to squeeze in a powerful 7500mAH rechargeable battery. That should last for up to 20 hours when just playing music, but it can also fully recharge most iPhones and still have enough juice left to keep playing music for a few hours.
Moshi IonBank 3K
The Moshi IonBank 3K isn’t cheap, but it’s well worth the cash. Absolutely oozing with class, this premium-design power bank has a magnetic vegan leather case, flat, tangle-free Lightning and USB connectors built in, and an aluminium front panel with a single LED built into the power button.
Rated at 3200mAh and running at around 65 percent efficiency rate, the Moshi will offer most standard iPhones a full charge. For the Plus or Max models you’re looking at more like 70- 80 percent charge, but even this is useful when you’re out of battery and away from mains power.
The charging rate is fast, with the IonBank 3K building in a 2.1A output and 2.4A input. It supports passthrough charging, here known as SmartSense, which means you can charge both power bank and iPhone at once. over, it supports synching when the USB port is plugged into a computer.

Cygnett ChargeUp Swift 10K
This Cygnett power bank not only packs 10,000mAh of power but also supports Qi standard wireless charging for your iPhone. It offers Fast Charging up to 7.5W (and 10W for Samsung devices), and promises to charge Apple devices 50% faster than other power banks.
We tested the Cynett ChargeUp on an iPhone XS and found it added 16% to battery life within 40 minutes. Wireless charging is typically slower than direct charging though, which was also true for the ChargeUp. Cabled, it added 30% battery life within 15 minutes to the same phone.
A useful feature is the digital display on the wireless power bank that shows you remaining percentage of power – which allows a less vague charge status than the power banks that only use a four-light meter.
While the Cygnett ChargeUp Swift is portable, it is heavy. This is due to the chunky frame which adds roughly an inch in width.
The ChargeUp offers one micro-USB port and two USB-A ports. It also only comes with a micro-USB cable, so you would need your own Lightning charging cable if you wanted to power up your iPhone quickly. Of course, you could put the hassle of cables aside altogether and go fully wireless.
Aukey Lightning Power Bank
All power banks work with iPhone, and some of the best suited have a built-in Lightning cable with which to charge your phone. This Aukey does not come with said cable, but it goes one better: it has a built-in Lightning port, which saves you the job of needing to scramble around for a Micro-USB or USB-C cable when you need to recharge the power bank.
The Lightning Power Bank is of a useful 20,000mAh capacity, which will keep your iPhone going days on end, but it’s blocky black matte plastic design is slightly less in keeping with the stylish tech Apple fans tend to carry. Look past this, though, and it’s got some great functionality.
As well as being able to charge the power bank with a Lightning cable, there’s also a Micro-USB input here for non-iPhone users. Both operate at 10W, and these days we prefer to see inputs equipped with Power Delivery to speed up charging of high-capacity banks such as this.
There are also two full-size USB outputs, into which you can plug any cable you like. Used independently they can run at 12W, but when combined the maximum total output of the Aukey is 17W.
The Aukey Lightning Power Bank seems somewhat old-fashioned compared to some fancier models on the market, but it will still do a fine job of keeping your iPhone topped up.
Techlink 13600mAh
The Techlink 13600mAH is a powerful battery pack that can charge your iPhone up to 8.8 times. It has two USB ports, so you’re free to charge your iPhone and an iPad at the same time if you wish. It comes with useful indicator lights that tell you when the power bank is low on charge as well.
The Techlink power bank is designed to prevent overheating, overloading, over-charging and short-circuiting, and comes with a 2-year warranty.
You can buy it now for £19.85, but we haven’t found anywhere that delivers to the US.
iQunix MiniPower
This Smart little cylinder packs a surprisingly large 3,550mAh in a body that’s 102x23mm.
That capacity is more than most smartphones, and this slim battery pack will give you the reassurance of a full recharge. It recharges via microUSB pretty quickly, and we’ve used it to fully charge several iPhones.
It’s affordable too, compared to high-street prices. Buy it now for £17.63/US20.99.
Tech Charge Super Slim 5000
This Super Slim power bank from Tech Charge appeals for its compact design and built-in cables for Lightning (Apple-certified) and USB-C. With an additional full-size USB output, it’s a versatile gadget for charging whatever device you have to hand, even if it’s not an iPhone.
In our testing we were slightly concerned that we could hear something knocking inside when shaking the device, but in every other respect it feels well made and builds in all the necessary safeguards for protection against over-charging, short-circuiting and so forth. It also comes with a one-year warranty.
The design is aesthetically pleasing, with an aluminium fascia front and back, spoiled only by a black plastic Band that circles around the edge. It uses four LEDs to show at a glance how much power remains, and when the battery is depleted it can be juiced up over a 10W Micro-USB input.
The Tech Charge bank is speedy but not groundbreaking, with each of its three outputs able to deliver up to 12W – more than the standard iPhone charger, but less than some power banks. It does not support passthrough charging, but with a relatively low-capacity 5,000mAh battery inside it shouldn’t prove too much hassle to recharge.
That 5,000mAh battery is good for between 3,000 and 3,500mAh as delivered to your device, so at least one full charge of your iPhone with some juice to spare for emergency situations.
You can buy it now for £34.95, although we haven’t found anywhere that delivers to the US.
Mophie Power Reserve
Mophie’s Power Reserve really is designed to be.sized – in fact, it even comes with a keyring attachment so you can keep it with you at all times.
The Power Reserve measures just 72mm long, 38mm wide and 14.5mm thick, so it’s easy to keep in your or a bag. It’s available in a number of different colours, and there’s a quick-release button that lets you detach it from the keyring when you need to use it.
That compact design means that its battery capacity is relatively limited at 1350mAh, and Mophie says it is primarily intended for use with an iPod or iPhone rather than larger devices such as an iPad. Even so, that should be enough to give you about 50% extra charge and keep you going for a few more hours.
There’s a Lightning cable that folds out from the side, but – apart from a USB connector to charge the battery itself – there are no other connectors, so you won’t be able to use it with older iPods and iPhones that use the original 30-pin connector.
You can buy it now for £14.99, while a version with more capacity is available in the US for 14.95.
Anker Astro Power Bank E1 6700mAh
While we haven’t personally tested this battery pack from Anker, it promises a powerful 6,700mAh, which is enough to charge an iPhone 7 or iPhone 6 twice, and an iPhone 7 Plus once. Anker prides itself on it being as small as a chocolate bar, which means it can fit easily in your or bag. Plus, a durable exterior makes it drop-proof.
To charge the Anker Astro itself takes 5.5 hours, which then charges connected devices at a 2A output. At £16.99/ US21.99 you get an affordable power bank that comes with a travel pouch and an 18-month warranty.

What are the Different Types of Power Banks?
Power banks vary in sizes, shapes, as well as the ways they charge or release energy.

As you can imagine, those ‘power banks’ are usually the size of a car battery or bigger, clearly running counter to the purpose of a ‘portable’ phone charger.
After size, the next important consideration is how a power bank charges and releases energy.
Standard USB power banks:
The most common power bank works just like a USB charger. They charge using a USB charger or a built-in plug, and then they become the USB charger to recharge a device via a USB cable.
Wireless power banks:
Wireless power banks need to be charged through a USB cable, but they charge cell phones wirelessly, making the process more convenient. Unlike USB power banks that are restricted by cable type, wireless portable phone chargers can be used universally by all cellphones.
How Many Times Can A Power Bank Charge My Phone?
This depends on the capacity of the power bank and your mobile.
For example, the iPhone 11 battery has a 3,110mAh capacity. If the battery is flat and you charge it with a full 7,000mAh power bank, the power bank can charge the iPhone three times with 780mAh (7,000 – 31102=780mAh) remaining.
Well, this is only partially true. The general rule is that your power bank ‘s real capacity is around 2/3 of the theoretical capacity. A 10,00mAh power bank may only be around 6600mAh.
Are Power Banks Allowed on Planes?
Power banks are only allowed in carry-on luggage and should not exceed 100 watt-hours (Wh) per battery, around 26,315mAh. You will need to seek approval from the airline if your portable phone charger exceeds 100Wh, inevitably prolonging the check-in process.
How to Extend your Power Bank’s Life?
In a similar way to cell phone batteries, power banks have an average of 300-500 charge-discharge cycles. When a power bank uses up all its cycles, it needs to be thrown away, so ensuring you purchase a reliable, high capacity battery pack will elongate its charging life.
Your power bank’s life is also affected by how you use it. To make your power bank last a little longer, follow the following tips:
Charge your power bank when you’re not using it:
Rechargeable batteries age whether you use them or not, but they do age slower with some charge in them. If you plan on storing it away, charge it first. And don’t leave it unused for a long time as batteries slowly discharge and will degrade and loose capacity by and by.
Don’t expose it to extreme temperatures:
Batteries work best at temperatures between 5 and 25 degrees. In extreme scenarios, the battery inside a battery pack will lose its energy faster and may even pose safety risks.
Don’t drop your power bank:
